Cocktail of the week: Farzi's monk mule – recipe

The Monk Mule has taken the world by storm, and one of the bars behind its newfound fame is Farzi in London. This Indian-inspired twist on the classic Moscow Mule features a potent cocktail that packs a flavorful punch.

Chef Sai Pawan at the helm of Farzi's bar, this concoction starts with a simple yet bold move - adding fresh turmeric to a Boston shaker for muddling. The spicy, earthy notes of the root are the perfect complement to the drink's other main ingredients: aged dark rum, fresh lime juice, ginger beer, and cardamom bitters.

To make this cocktail at home, start by placing a slice of fresh turmeric in your Boston shaker. Add 40ml of Indian rum, or Old Monk 7-year-old as recommended, along with 10ml of fresh lime juice, 100ml of ginger beer, and two drops of cardamom bitters. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously to combine.

Once shaken, pour the mixture into a tumbler filled with more ice, and stir well. The key here is fine-straining the liquid from the ice-filled shaker. This may seem like an unnecessary step but trust us when we say that this final flourish is crucial in bringing out all of the drink's unique flavors.

Finally, garnish your Monk Mule with a sprig of fresh mint and serve immediately. With its combination of spices and bitters, this cocktail might just be the perfect addition to any festive gathering or casual dinner party.

I'm telling you, making a cocktail like the Farzi's Monk Mule is so last season 🤷‍♂️ it was still cool back in 2012 when I used to make mojitos with my friends. But seriously, adding fresh turmeric to give it that extra oomph? Genius! My grandma used to make this exact same combination of spices for her famous Indian chicken curry... wait, what was the question again? 😂

I'm loving the innovative twist on the classic Moscow Mule at Farzi in London! 🍹 The addition of fresh turmeric is pure genius - not only does it add a pop of color to the drink, but its spicy and earthy notes complement the rum, lime juice, ginger beer, and cardamom bitters perfectly. The process of fine-straining the liquid from the ice-filled shaker is also super clever - I never would have thought of that step! 😊 To make it even more accessible to home bartenders, using Indian rum like Old Monk 7-year-old as a substitute for regular dark rum is a fantastic idea. The result is definitely worth trying out at your next gathering or dinner party.

🍹 I'm loving the creativity behind Farzi's take on the classic Moscow Mule! Adding turmeric to give it that extra oomph 🌿 is genius. And OMG, using Old Monk 7-year-old rum is a total game changer - the aged flavor is everything 💥. It's amazing how something so simple can pack such a powerful punch. Can't wait to try making this at home and serving it up at my next dinner party 🎉👍

I'm not sure about this whole Monk Mule craze... I mean, I get why it's popular - turmeric does add a nice warmth to drinks and all that jazz 🤔. But is it really worth going out of your way for an Indian-inspired twist on a classic Moscow Mule? I've made the drink at home and while it tastes good, it's not life-changing... I mean, have you tried just throwing some turmeric in your usual cocktail recipe? Boom! Instant flavor boost 😂. And don't even get me started on how many extra ingredients this thing has - I'm already wary of over-complicating drinks 🤯. Give me a good ol' fashioned rum and coke any day 👍

I've been trying Farzi out since they opened and OMG it's like a whole new level of flavor explosion in my Moscow Mule game 💥😍 I'm not even kidding when I say that the fresh turmeric adds this insane depth of earthy warmth... it's seriously changed the game for me, especially during winter months when I need something to warm up my spirits 🎄👌

I've tried it at Farzi in London and it's seriously impressive. I think what really makes it pop is that balance between spicy, earthy & sweet notes. And trust me, shaking it like crazy in a Boston shaker gets all those flavors just right 🌴. The cardamom bitters are also a nice touch, adds this unique oomph to the whole thing. Now I'm tempted to try making it at home and experimenting with different spice levels... anyone got a good recipe for me?
