Construction worker fatally shot at illegal bar in Sunset Park, police say

A 27-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the tragic shooting of a 31-year-old construction worker at an unlicensed bar in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood early Monday morning. The suspect, Gabriel Hernandez, was charged with manslaughter and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon by police.

According to authorities, Giovanni Rivera, who lived just two miles away in Borough Park, was fatally shot in the torso and back while inside the building on 50th Street and Third Avenue around 5 a.m. Medical personnel rushed him to NYU Langone Hospitalโ€“Brooklyn, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into Rivera's killing is ongoing, with police still gathering evidence. Representatives from the establishment where the shooting occurred were unavailable for comment at this time.

Rivera's family has expressed their devastating loss and lack of information from law enforcement in a statement to Gothamist. His sister, Maria Hernandez, described her brother as "very kind, very good-hearted" and said he was "not looking for any trouble." Rivera had recently returned to his construction job, with the goal of saving up money to visit his mother in Mexico.

The arrest marks a sobering reminder of Brooklyn's growing violence problem. According to NYPD data, this year's 72nd Precinct recorded just one homicide as of November 16, compared to three at the same point last year. However, there have been an increase in shootings within the precinct, with three reported incidents through that date.

This story is based on preliminary information from police and may be updated as more details become available.

๐Ÿ˜• just can't believe what's happening in our community... like, we're always hearin' about how Brooklyn's supposed to be this safe haven for artists & creatives, but it feels like no one's doin' enough to keep us safe. I mean, 72 homicides in the whole borough? That's crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ And it's not just the big cities that are sufferin', neighborhoods like Sunset Park and Borough Park are gettin' hit hard too.

We need more resources for community programs that help prevent violence & support people who are strugglin'. It's not just about throwin' cops at the problem, we gotta tackle the root causes. And can someone please tell me what's goin' on with those unlicensed bars? They're basically just lookin' for ways to make a quick buck off our backs. ๐Ÿค‘ We need better regulation & enforcement, pronto! ๐Ÿ’ช

.. just read about this tragic shooting in Brooklyn ๐Ÿค•. It's like, really sad that it had to happen here. I was thinking, maybe we can learn from this to make our communities safer? We need more people looking out for each other, you know? Like, if someone's around a bar that doesn't feel right, they should speak up or leave. We all deserve to feel safe and supported.

I also think about the construction worker who lost his life, Giovanni Rivera - what was he thinking about before that fateful night? Was he worried about his family, his future plans... we don't even know all of this, but it's heartbreaking. I hope his family finds some peace soon โค๏ธ.

can't believe this happened in Sunset Park lol so many bars poppin up everywhere like where's the enforcement? shouldn't there be a system in place to regulate these places? it's not just about saving lives but also about makin' sure our communities are safe for everyone ๐Ÿค•๐ŸŒ† anyway, my thoughts go out to Rivera's family, may he rest in peace ๐Ÿ’”

Ugh, another senseless shooting in Brooklyn ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜•. I'm not surprised to hear about this one though, it's like we're living in a never-ending video game where nobody's safe anymore ๐ŸŽฎ. The fact that the suspect was let out of custody in the first place is just mind-boggling... what even is our system like?! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I mean, I know we can't control everything, but come on! We need to do better than this. More guns, more violence, more people getting hurt or killed ๐Ÿ’”. It's just so frustrating and sad. And now the family has to go through this too... poor Maria and her family ๐Ÿ˜ข.

I hope the police are able to get to the bottom of this one and bring some justice to Giovanni's loved ones. But seriously, we need to ask ourselves if we're doing enough to prevent these kinds of tragedies from happening in the first place ๐Ÿค”. It's time for real change, not just more empty promises or half-measures ๐Ÿ’ช.

omg u no?! ๐Ÿคฏ this shooting in brooklyn's sunset park neighborhood is like something outta a movie ๐ŸŽฅโ€โ™‚๏ธ the thought of someone just walkin into a bar lookin for a good time and gettin shot in the torso and back is just... wild ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and can u believe they found the guy who did it just 2 miles away from where his victim lived?! ๐Ÿ“ that's just crazy talk! ๐Ÿ’ฅ anyway, i feel so bad for giovanni's family, he sounds like such a good person ๐Ÿค— and it's just devastating to think about how much pain and suffering this city is facin right now ๐Ÿ˜” hope the police can get to the bottom of this and make sure justice is served โš–๏ธ

Crime doesn't pay... literally

Hats off to the victims

.. this is just crazy what happened to Giovanni Rivera ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I know we all hate those unlicensed bars in Brooklyn, but come on, you gotta feel bad for the guy who got shot there ๐Ÿ‘Š. Gabriel Hernandez might've broken some laws or whatever, but manslaughter? That's harsh ๐Ÿ’”. I don't wanna be a defense expert or anything, but maybe they should've been more careful with security and stuff ๐Ÿค. I heard it was pretty chaotic inside that bar, anyone else surprised the police didn't get there sooner โฐ. The family is really suffering from this loss, I hope justice gets served soon ๐Ÿ˜ž.

๐Ÿค• The city never sleeps, but sometimes it's better if it did ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ. The growing violence problem in Brooklyn is a wake-up call for all of us to think about our safety and well-being ๐Ÿšจ. It's heartbreaking to hear about the loss of Giovanni Rivera and his family ๐Ÿ˜”. We can only hope that justice will be served and that this arrest brings some closure to their situation ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

man this is so sad ๐Ÿค• another life cut short by some stupid stuff thats happenin in brooklyn its like theres no end to all dis violence ๐Ÿšซ nyc needs 2 do somethin about dis ASAP like whats happenin 2 these ppl especially wen they got fams lookin @ dem ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ˜” this whole thing is just so sad... can't believe some young life got taken away like that. 27 years old, still so much to live for ๐Ÿคฏ and it's just senseless violence everywhere u feel me? Brooklyn's supposed to be a vibrant neighborhood but now it's getting this kinda vibe ๐ŸŒ† what's going on?! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

man this is so sad ๐Ÿค• like what happened to the guy who got shot? i feel bad for his family too, they must be going through some crazy stuff ๐Ÿ’” the bar that had shooting was not even legit lol how does that even happen in a neighborhood with so many people? NYPD needs to step up their game and make sure those places are safe ๐Ÿšจ gotta give it to Giovanni's sister for speaking out tho, she sounds like an amazing person ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ˜” this is so sad another young life lost... i feel bad for his family & friends... it's like, what's going on in our city? we need to do something about this violence problem... ๐Ÿคฏ I'm all for the police to do their job but at the same time, we gotta make sure they're not just collecting info but also giving us some closure too... my heart goes out to Rivera's sister & family ๐Ÿ‘Ž

OMG, this is like, so sad!!! ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ข The fact that some guy just went to a bar that's literally unlicensed and ended up getting shot... it's just crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ Like, what's going on with these places? How can they even be operating without licenses? And what about the police? They're like, "Oh, we don't have any info for this family"... ๐Ÿ˜ญ That's not cool at all. I feel so bad for Giovanni's family and friends... he was such a nice guy, just trying to make a living and visit his mom in Mexico ๐Ÿค—. This is like, Brooklyn's biggest problem right now... the violence is getting out of hand ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ. I just hope they catch this guy and bring some justice to Giovanni's family ๐Ÿ’ช

man, this whole thing just feels so... pointless ๐Ÿค• it's like we're just trying to find meaning in a world where senseless violence exists, but at the same time, we can't even seem to stop it ๐Ÿ’” i mean, think about it, a young man's life cut short over a bar that wasn't even legit in the first place... what are we even doing? we're just trying to fill this void with more stuff and distractions ๐Ÿ“บ but honestly, I feel like we need to take a step back and actually talk about why this is happening ๐Ÿ’ญ is it poverty? lack of opportunities? or is it something deeper? for me, it's about how we treat each other, you know? we're so caught up in our own lives that we forget there are people just two miles away who could've been us ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ this is so sad ๐Ÿค• can't believe what happened to Giovanni Rivera ๐Ÿ’” he was just trying to work and save up for his mom's trip ๐Ÿš€ and ended up getting shot ๐ŸŽฏ in the wrong place at the wrong time โฐ police are still investigating but at least they arrested Gabriel Hernandez ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ hopefully he gets the help he needs ๐Ÿคž but seriously, this is a huge reminder of Brooklyn's violence problem ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ we need to come together as a community to make our neighborhoods safer ๐Ÿ”’ everyone deserves to feel safe and respected ๐Ÿ™

I donโ€™t usually comment but I feel like we need to talk about this growing violence problem in Brooklyn ๐Ÿค•. I mean, 72 homicides is still way too many for a city that's supposed to be all about diversity and inclusivity. It's like, what's going on? Is it lack of resources? Lack of community programs? Or just some kind of underlying issue that we can't seem to solve?

I've been living here for a while now and I feel like the police are doing everything they can but sometimes you get these random incidents where you're left wondering what happened. Like, was this guy just having a bad day or did he have a personal vendetta against his victim? It's all so unclear.

And then there's the issue of unlicensed bars...I mean, come on, how many times do we need to see these places pop up and get shut down before something changes? It's not like it's rocket science. Just basic safety precautions, you know?

Anyway, I don't want to be a negative Nancy but this story just hits me hard ๐Ÿค—. We need to do better as a community to address these issues.

Man... this Brooklyn thing is getting out of hand ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’”. I mean, can't we just have a safe spot to grab a drink without worrying about some psycho taking us out? ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's like the city's lost its chill vibe or something. And what's with all these unlicensed bars popping up everywhere? Don't they know that's just asking for trouble? ๐Ÿ”’๐Ÿ’ฅ

I'm sorry for Rivera's family, though - that's a devastating loss ๐Ÿ˜”. My heart goes out to them. We need to do better as a community to look out for each other and keep our neighborhoods safe ๐Ÿค. I hope the police can catch all the folks involved in this and bring some justice to those affected ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's crazy how fast Brooklyn's changed, too... from being this cool artsy place to having more shootings than we'd like ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. We need to find a way to balance our growth with keeping our safety intact ๐Ÿค”. I guess only time will tell if that happens, but for now, let's just take a deep breath and hope for the best ๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

"You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’”

I'm really worried about what's happening in Brooklyn right now. It feels like the city is losing its sense of safety, and it's affecting people from all walks of life. We need to come together as a community to address this growing violence problem and support those who have been affected by it. ๐Ÿ’–

Ugh, this is just so sad ๐Ÿค•... I mean, think about it, a guy goes to a bar, expecting a good time, and then gets caught up in some crazy gun violence ๐Ÿ’€. It's like, where was the security? Who was watching out for people's safety? And what really gets me is that the police are still gathering evidence, so they don't even know if there were any other shooters involved ๐Ÿค”.

And can we talk about how Brooklyn's violence problem is growing? 72% fewer homicides in one precinct compared to last year? ๐Ÿ“‰ That's not a good thing. I'm all for people wanting to have a good time, but it's got to be done safely. Maybe they need to re-think their licensing process or something.

Anyway, my heart goes out to Rivera's family and loved ones ๐Ÿ‘ช. Losing someone you love is just the worst ๐Ÿ’”.
