Controversial US study on hepatitis B vaccines in Africa is cancelled

Controversial US-funded Hepatitis B vaccine study cancelled due to ethics concerns.

A highly contentious $1.6m US-funded study on administering hepatitis B vaccines to newborns in Guinea-Bissau has been abruptly halted, according to senior officials at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study, backed by Robert F Kennedy Jr, a prominent vaccine skeptic, had drawn widespread criticism over its questionable methodology.

In a statement made during a press conference on Thursday morning, Yap Boum, a senior official at the CDC, confirmed that the trial was cancelled due to concerns about the ethics of the design. "The way the study was designed was a big challenge," Boum stated, adding that the Africa CDC would only proceed with the trial if it was redesigned to address these issues.

Guinea-Bissau officials initially claimed that the trial would still move forward but maintained that the redesign would be crucial in ensuring the study's ethics. The original plan had involved withholding vaccines from 7,000 newborns and administering them to another 7,000 at random, raising significant concerns about depriving some children of vital protection against a potentially deadly disease.

Critics argue that such an approach would put children's lives at risk, with experts likening the trial to infamous medical experiments in the past. Paul Offit, an infectious diseases physician, described it as "a very damaging study" that could have long-lasting consequences.

A study by Emory University's Boghuma Titanji found no evidence to support the claim that adding multiple vaccines would interfere with their effects. However, she did emphasize the importance of designing trials led by African scientists and powered by questions from Africans, rather than exploiting scarce vaccine resources.

The cancellation has been hailed as a victory for advocacy groups pushing back against unethical research practices in Africa.

πŸ€” This whole thing is a big lesson in accountability πŸ™. I mean, think about it - someone throws around a lot of money ($1.6m) and gets caught up in controversy because they didn't do their due diligence on the ethics of the study 😳. It's like, if you're gonna invest in something, make sure you're not investing in harm πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. This whole thing is a reminder that power and money can be double-edged swords πŸ’Έ. You've got to use them wisely so they don't hurt people πŸ’”. I'm glad the CDC stepped in and put a stop to it πŸ‘. It's not just about the vaccines, it's about doing what's right for humanity 🌎.

OMG, what a huge relief! πŸ™Œ I was low-key freaking out when I heard that the whole study was cancelled lol πŸ˜‚. Like, who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to withhold vaccines from 7k newborns? That's just crazy talk 🀯. And can you believe this guy Robert F Kennedy Jr is backing it? His track record on vaccine safety is sketchy at best πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I'm so glad the CDC listened to the experts and came to their senses. The fact that they're willing to redesign the study shows they value children's lives over whatever 'research' goals they had πŸ’‘. Kudos to Paul Offit for speaking truth to power, btw πŸ‘

omg u wudnt bliev what just happnd w/ dat hepatitis b vaccine study in guinea-bissau lol 1.6m us bucks down da drain bc of ethics concerns πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. like wat was robert f kennedy jr thinking?? who tries 2 deprive newborns of vaccine & watch them get sick?? 🀒. it's all abt prioritizin people over profits, u feel? & btw, cant say i'm surprised tbh. we've seen plenty of sketchy trials in the past πŸ’”. on a more positive note tho, it's awesome 2 c ppl standin up 4 what's rite & pushin back against unethical research πŸ™Œ. now let's get back 2 gettin vaccines 2 all kids ASAP πŸ€—

πŸ€• just heard about this US-funded study being cancelled due to ethics concerns πŸ™Œ it's crazy that such a reckless experiment was even planned in the first place... withholding vaccines from newborns and giving them to some kids at random? 😱 that's like playing Russian roulette with tiny humans' lives. 🚨 glad that advocacy groups are pushing back against this kind of research, we gotta prioritize people's health over pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo πŸ’―

I'm totally stoked to see this study get axed πŸ™Œ. It's crazy to think that there were people actually considering doing something like withholding vaccines from newborns and giving them to some kids at random, it's just not right. I mean, we all know how serious Hepatitis B can be, especially in areas where access to healthcare is limited. To even suggest putting kids' lives at risk like that is just devastating πŸ€•.

And what really gets my goat is that this study was funded by the US government and had some big-name vaccine skeptic backing it, which already raises so many red flags. I'm glad to see the Africa CDC stepping up and saying no way, we're not gonna do this 😊. It's super important to have studies that are designed with the best interests of the participants in mind, not just some fancy experiment for the sake of science.

It's also a big win for advocacy groups who've been pushing back against unethical research practices in Africa πŸŽ‰. We need more voices like theirs speaking up and holding people in power accountable. And hey, it's always good to see experts like Paul Offit weighing in – he's got some serious cred when it comes to infectious diseases πŸ’―.

πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ OMG, can you even imagine a study where they're going to withhold vaccines from newborns? It's literally like something out of a horror movie! 🀯 The fact that it was funded by the US government and had Robert F Kennedy Jr backing it is just so sketchy. I mean, I get that he thinks there are some concerns about vaccines, but this is just crazy talk. πŸ™„ And to think they were going to administer vaccines to one group of kids and withhold them from another... 😱 it's just not right.

I'm so glad the CDC stepped in and cancelled the study. It's a huge victory for advocacy groups who are fighting against unethical research practices in Africa. We need more people like that speaking out against things that don't feel right. πŸ’ͺ And I have to say, I'm loving all the expert opinions saying this was a really damaging study that could have long-lasting consequences... it just confirms what I already thought: we shouldn't be messing around with our children's health like that! πŸ€•

πŸ™„ I mean come on, who thought it was a good idea to give some newborns no Hep B vaccine while others got it at random? 🀯 That's just basic human decency and medical ethics 101! And now that it's been cancelled, I'm all for the CDC prioritizing the safety of those children. πŸ’‘ It's not like we need more examples of poor research design in Africa to raise eyebrows about vaccine skepticism... what's next? 🚨

πŸ™ I feel bad for those 7k newborns who were gonna be used like lab rats. I mean, can you imagine being 1 of them? πŸ’” It's all about prioritizing human life and dignity over any so-called "research". The fact that people are already questioning the ethics of this study is a huge red flag 🚨.

It's also kinda sad that we even need to talk about this in the first place. I mean, shouldn't vaccine trials be designed with the safety and well-being of participants at the forefront? πŸ’‘ It just goes to show how messed up our system can get when profit & politics come into play πŸ€‘.

Anyway, kudos to the advocacy groups for pushing back against these unethical practices πŸ™Œ. We need more people like them who are willing to speak up for what's right πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ™ I'm so relieved to hear that this super sketchy study on hepatitis B vaccines got cancelled! It's crazy that they were even thinking of withholding vaccines from newborns - can you imagine the potential harm? 😱 At least now we know that some people are really looking out for the welfare of Africans and pushing back against research practices that could put lives at risk. πŸ’ͺ Let's keep those advocacy groups on our radar, shall we? 🎯

😊 this is crazy... like, i thought we were past this kinda stuff πŸ™„ some ppl are just so reckless with human lives 🀯 it's wild that they even thought this was a good idea πŸ’‘ vaccine skepticism can be valid but NOT at the expense of putting kids in harm's way 🚫 and honestly, who benefits from this kinda study anyway? πŸ€‘ not the country, not the people... just some rich ppl with an agenda πŸ’Έ

I'm so relieved to hear that this study got cancelled πŸ™Œ. I mean, the idea of withholding vaccines from newborns and giving them to some kids at random is just crazy 😳. You can't even begin to imagine how that would make parents feel knowing their kid's life could be put at risk πŸ’”. And honestly, it's no surprise that Paul Offit called it out as a "very damaging study" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I think we've learned from this experience that vaccine trials need to be super transparent and designed with the best interests of the children in mind ❀️. It's all about trust and putting people over profits πŸ’Έ.
