Convicted killer sentenced to life in prison for 2018 double homicide in Kensington

Local Man Sentenced to Life Behind Bars for 2018 Double Homicide in Kensington

A Philadelphia man has been handed down two consecutive life sentences for the fatal shooting of two people on a Kensington street corner nearly eight years ago. Mario Ramirez, 38, was convicted last October of killing Jose Vega, 38, and Anthony Torres, 23, outside the La Corona Market at H and Thayer streets in August 2018.

The victims died after Ramirez exited his vehicle and opened fire on them with an assault rifle around 7pm that evening. Witnesses reported seeing a gold Chevrolet Uplander driving in the area shortly before the shooting occurred. Ramirez was identified as the driver, while his passenger has not been charged in connection to the crime, despite being seen firing shots.

The family of one of the victims delivered a heart-wrenching impact statement during the sentencing hearing. "There's a void that cannot be filled," said Torres' family members. "We are broken. With his passing, life just feels empty with nothing to look forward to. His children left without a father, parents without a son, two siblings left without a brother."

Ramirez was arrested in March 2023 and charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. Following a week-long trial, he was convicted and sentenced to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole by a Philadelphia County judge.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office said that the sentencing brings closure for the victims' families and friends, who had been grieving for years without knowing their loved ones' killer had been held accountable. "For several years, the victims' families and friends have grieved without knowing their loved ones' killer was held accountable," said Attorney General Dave Sunday in a statement. "We hope this sentencing brings them a measure of justice."

man that's just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. two lives lost and a family torn apart by senseless violence ๐Ÿšซ. it's crazy how much pain one person can cause to so many people ๐Ÿ’”. i'm glad the system worked in this case and the killer got held accountable ๐Ÿ˜Œ. but ugh, who gets to live with that kind of guilt for the rest of their life? ๐Ÿคฏ my thoughts are with the families of the victims, esp jose's kids - poor kids lost a dad way too early ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ’”

omg what's up with that gold Chevy Uplander tho ๐Ÿค”... seems suspicious to me that the passenger wasn't charged ๐Ÿ˜’... maybe there's more to it than meets the eye? ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ I mean, two life sentences is harsh enough but adding a third person into the mix raises some red flags in my book ๐Ÿ’ญ. what if this was all just a setup for something bigger? ๐Ÿคฏ and those sentencing hearing emotions? totally fabricated ๐Ÿ’”... just saying

I'm really glad that justice has finally been served for Jose Vega's family & friends ๐Ÿ’”. It's been 8 long years since the tragic shooting, and I can only imagine how hard it must've been for them to carry on without closure ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Two life sentences is a harsh punishment, but I suppose it's fair considering the severity of the crime ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I'm just hoping that this sentence brings some peace of mind to those who lost loved ones that day ๐Ÿ™. And can we all take a moment to appreciate the gold Chevrolet Uplander? Just kidding, not funny at all ๐Ÿ˜…. Seriously though, I hope Ramirez serves every last day of his sentence with no chance of parole ๐Ÿ‘.

man that's just devastating for the fams of those two ppl ๐Ÿค• it's crazy how long it took to get some closure and now the AG is saying its gonna bring them some kinda comfort... but let's be real, no amount of justice can fill that void they're talking about ๐Ÿ’” a life sentence is still a harsh punishment tho, feels like he should've gotten more time for what he did ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿค• This verdict feels like a small step towards healing for the family of Jose and Anthony, but it's been so long since the tragedy happened ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Eight years is way too long to wait for justice, especially when you consider how traumatic this event must have been for everyone involved ๐Ÿ’”. I can only imagine how devastating it must be for their children, who've grown up without a dad and a big brother ๐Ÿ’•.

It's also interesting that the passenger in the car has not been charged, despite being seen firing shots ๐Ÿค”. You'd think they'd at least face some kind of accountability, but I guess we'll never know what really went down ๐Ÿ˜•. Anyway, let's hope this sentence brings a measure of peace for the family and friends of Jose and Anthony ๐Ÿ‘Š.

man that guy must've lost his mind to pull off something like that ๐Ÿคฏ he's 38 and gets life in prison for killing two people...it's crazy how some people can be so cold-blooded ๐Ÿ’€ i was talking to my cousin who knew one of the victims, and it broke her heart listening to their family's story ๐ŸŒง๏ธ they're still grieving all these years later, it's not fair ๐Ÿ˜” anyway, good job justice being served, but you gotta feel for the victims' families and friends who've been living with this uncertainty for so long ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿค” I'm not sure how reliable that witness testimony is. Like, just because someone says they saw the car, doesn't mean it's definitely Ramirez driving around that area at 7pm... I mean, what if they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time? And what about that passenger who wasn't charged? Did anyone investigate their role in the shooting? That feels kinda fishy to me. Can someone please drop some sources on this?

๐Ÿค• so sad for the fams of those two guys who got taken from them 8 yrs ago, it's like they're still grieving and now they get to know they'll never have to live with the uncertainty of not knowing their brother/father/husband's fate. life sentence is harsh but i guess it's what justice can offer in a case where there's so much pain & loss involved ๐Ÿ’”

man... two lives lost in an instant ๐Ÿ˜” it's crazy how something like that can happen on a street corner, especially in a city like Philly where you'd think people would be more aware of their surroundings ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. the thing is, life sentences are harsh but I guess they're needed sometimes to keep people accountable for heinous crimes like this one ๐Ÿ’ฏ. it's not about being optimistic or pessimistic, it's just a fact that we live in a world where bad things happen and sometimes there aren't any easy answers ๐Ÿค”. the families of the victims deserve justice, no matter how long it takes to get it ๐Ÿ‘Š.

man i cant even read this news its so sad to think about mario ramirez committing such a heinous act and now his victims are finally getting some kind of closure ๐Ÿ™ the whole thing is just heartbreaking, especially when you hear that torres' family said there's a void that cannot be filled and theyre left with nothing to look forward to its like what even can you do in this situation? its not like justice is gonna bring them back but at least now they know who did it ๐Ÿ˜”

This case is like what happens when you let the system move too slow. Eight years to catch a guy who killed two people? ๐Ÿคฏ That's just not right, man. You'd think with the advancements in tech and forensic science, we could've caught this dude way sooner. And now he's behind bars for life, but it's hard to feel satisfied when you know there are so many other cases like this out there that aren't getting the same attention.

It's also gotta be tough on the families of the victims. I mean, they're still grieving and trying to pick up the pieces, and then you got a system that finally gets around to holding someone accountable... 8 years later? It's just not fair to them. But at the same time, you gotta respect the fact that justice was served and this guy is off the streets. So, I guess it's all about balance, right? โš–๏ธ

Ugh I'm so sad for Jose Vega's kids, it's like their whole world just got shattered into a million pieces ๐Ÿค• their dad is literally gone and they're still trying to process it all... meanwhile I had the craziest week last year where my grandma flew in from out of state unexpectedly and we spent an entire weekend together making homemade pasta and laughing nonstop - I swear, some days are just way more interesting than others ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm so tired of these life sentences ๐Ÿคฏ... like, what's the point of even serving 2 life terms consecutively? Just means they'll be stuck behind bars for another 50+ years without getting to see their families or do anything meaningful. And the passenger who got away with it? Still out there, right? No consequences for them at all ๐Ÿ™„... just more proof that the system is broken.

Umm, I don't know... like, yeah, it's good that the guy got what he deserved, right? ๐Ÿค” But at the same time, isn't two life sentences kinda harsh? Like, does it really bring closure to the victims' families or is it just, you know, justice for its own sake? ๐Ÿ’” And I feel bad for the passenger who wasn't charged, but like, why would they be exempt from punishment too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's all kinda confusing...

just heartbreaking, man... 8 years later and still pain for those fams... life just ain't fair, you know? ๐Ÿค• and another thing, i feel bad for the victim's kids, growin' up without a dad or an uncle... it's like, they're already strugglin', now this... ๐Ÿ˜”
