Cook County prosecutors announce charges in 2004 Gold Coast murder

A Decade-Long Cold Case Heats Up as Gold Coast Man Charged with Murder

After nearly two decades on the run, 68-year-old David Barklow has finally faced justice for a fatal shooting that occurred on Chicago's Gold Coast over 18 years ago. The Cook County State's Attorney's office announced charges of first-degree murder against Barklow earlier this month, bringing closure to the family and friends of Kent Projansky, a man who was found shot to death in his apartment in December 2004.

The case went cold after Projansky's brutal killing, with investigators unable to find any leads despite searching the crime scene extensively. It wasn't until 2017 that the case was re-examined as part of a state project for unsolved homicides. At that time, prosecutors discovered that some fingerprints found at the crime scene belonged to Barklow, a man who lived in a neighboring building and knew Projansky.

Barklow was arrested in 2019, but he managed to evade arrest once again by fleeing the country. He traveled to Canada, then Sweden, before disappearing entirely. However, in April 2022, a Cook County arrest warrant was issued for Barklow, and the FBI obtained a federal warrant for his arrest due to his unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

It wasn't until this month that authorities finally apprehended Barklow at an airport in Lima, Peru, where he had been detained since earlier this year. He has since been extradited back to Illinois and made his first court appearance, where he was ordered detained until trial.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office expressed gratitude to the Chicago Police Department, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Peruvian authorities for their efforts in solving the case. "My office will never stop working to seek justice for victims and their families, no matter how much time has passed," said Eileen O'Neill Burke, State's Attorney.

The case serves as a reminder that even after two decades, justice can still be served through determination and perseverance from law enforcement agencies.

๐Ÿ™ finally some closure for the Projansky family and friends after all those years... I'm glad they got to see justice served, even if it was 18 yrs too late ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. I mean, can you imagine living with that kind of uncertainty? The investigators did a great job re-examining the case and following leads until Barklow was caught. And what's crazy is he thought he could just hop on a plane to Peru and leave everything behind ๐Ÿ˜‚. Justice may be served now, but it's heartbreaking that it took so long. My thoughts are with Kent Projansky's loved ones ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ˜ฉ Finally some justice after 20 years! I mean, who else can just run away from their crimes for that long? It's like he thought he was above the law or something. And poor Kent Projansky... his family deserves so much better than a life sentence of wondering if their loved one is still alive or dead ๐Ÿ˜ข. The fact that it took 2017 to re-examine the case and find those fingerprints just shows you how slow justice can be sometimes. Thankfully, it all came together this time and Barklow's not getting away with this anymore. The Cook County State's Attorney's office seems really on top of it too ๐Ÿ‘.

๐Ÿ™ finally some good news about this cold case, but you gotta wonder what took them so long... 18 years is just crazy. I mean, the guy was supposed to face justice all that time, but some tiny fingerprint match in 2017 was like a break-through moment for the investigators ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. And can you imagine how traumatic it must've been for Projansky's family and friends not knowing who did this to him? It's just so sad ๐Ÿค•. But I guess all good things come to those who wait... or in this case, to those who are finally caught ๐Ÿ™ƒ. The fact that the prosecution is still pushing forward with justice after all these years is a testament to their dedication ๐Ÿ’ช. Fingers crossed for Barklow's trial and hopefully a guilty verdict ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ OMG, did you see those stats?! Like 18 years is a looong time to leave someone dead! ๐Ÿคฏ But seriously, 68 years old for the perp? That's ancient! ๐Ÿ˜ณ And check it out - 97% of the fingerprints found at the crime scene matched Barklow. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ‘€ Mind blown!

But what really gets me is that this case went cold in 2004 and took a decade to get re-examined ๐Ÿค”. I mean, how many other lives got ruined or lost during those 18 years? ๐Ÿ˜ญ This just goes to show that law enforcement can still bring justice after the long shot ๐ŸŽฏ.

And speaking of stats... did you know that since 2000, only 12% of cold cases have been solved? ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ‘€ That's like, a small percentage! But this one? We're talking 100%! ๐Ÿ’ช I just can't get enough of this story. So many twists and turns - from fleeing to Canada to getting extradited back to Illinois ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Anyway, kudos to the Chicago Police Department, DOJ, FBI, and Peruvian authorities for their hard work ๐Ÿ™Œ. And special props to Eileen O'Neill Burke for saying that her office won't stop fighting for justice ๐Ÿ’ช.

You know what really gets me? This case just shows how much work goes into solving crimes like this ๐Ÿค”. I mean, think about it, nearly 2 decades of searching for clues and trying to piece together what happened... it's crazy to think that one fingerprint was the key to finally catching Barklow ๐Ÿ˜…. And can you blame him? Who wouldn't want to escape a murder charge after all that time? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ But seriously, I'm so glad this family got some closure and justice was served โค๏ธ. It's just a reminder that even when things seem impossible, perseverance and determination can lead to amazing results ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿš” finally some closure for the Projansky family ๐Ÿ‘ช. it's wild to think about how long this guy was on the run ๐Ÿคฏ. i mean 18 years is a looong time to be dodging justice ๐Ÿ’ผ. but props to the investigators who kept at it even when all hope seemed lost ๐Ÿ”. and what's up with Barklow fleeing to peru? ๐Ÿ›ซ๏ธ did he really think he could just disappear for that long? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ anyway, glad to see justice served, even if it took a while ๐Ÿ˜Œ

omg u guys i cant even handle the emotions rn i just read about david barklow being charged with murder after 18 yrs on the run ๐Ÿคฏ his fingerprints were found at the crime scene in 2007 but they didnt catch him back then lol like what was he waiting for? anyway im so glad justice is finally served to kents family and friends ๐Ÿ™ its crazy how a case can go cold and then suddenly heat up again ๐Ÿ’ฅ i feel bad for them having to wait all those yrs for closure ๐Ÿ˜ญ the cook county state attys office is literally heroes for not giving up on this case ๐Ÿ’ช

omg u wont bliev wut happnd 2 david barklow!! hes been on th run 4eva! i mean who does dat? he got caught at an airport in peru lol idk how long it took them 2 figger out his fingerprints but gud job chicago police & FBI ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ผ i feel so bad 4 kent projansky fam tho 18 yrs r a lotta time but justice was servd & thats all that matters ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘

"When you come across someone who has done wrong but is also frail, it's hard not to feel some compassion, but that doesn't mean giving up on them." ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ผ

๐Ÿ™Œ finally some justice after all these years! I mean, 18 years is way too long to be waiting for answers about what happened to Kent Projansky. It's crazy to think that the case went cold because investigators couldn't find any leads, but then BAM! new evidence comes along and suddenly it's like the whole thing was fresh again. The fact that Barklow evaded arrest not once, not twice, but THREE times is just wild... I guess you could say he really tried to fly under the radar. ๐Ÿ˜… Anyway, kudos to the law enforcement agencies who worked tirelessly to track him down and bring him to justice. It's a big deal that this case is finally being solved, even if it took a decade (or 3) too long!

๐Ÿš” finally got his man! 68 year old David Barklow thought he could outrun justice but Peru's airport security caught him trying to fly the coop once again ๐Ÿ˜‚. I feel for Kent Projansky's family who have been waiting for closure for so long. It's crazy that it took re-examining the fingerprints in 2017 for the case to heat up again. Good job by the investigators and law enforcement agencies involved! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ Eileen O'Neill Burke is a total boss, her dedication to justice is inspiring ๐Ÿ’ฏ. This case is a reminder that even after two decades, justice can still be served with determination and hard work ๐Ÿ™Œ

I'm so relieved this cold case is finally being solved ๐Ÿ™. It's crazy to think about how long it took for the DNA evidence to come back in 2017 and lead to Barklow's arrest. The fact that he evaded justice for so long by fleeing to other countries, but ultimately got caught at an airport in Peru, is just mind-blowing ๐Ÿคฏ. It's a huge win for the Projansky family and a testament to the hard work of law enforcement agencies around the world who refused to give up on this case. The justice system may not always be perfect, but moments like these show that it can still deliver closure for those affected by tragedy ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

omg u gotta feel 4 the projansky fam right now! like they've been waiting 2o yrs 4 justice & its finally here!!! i cant believe barklow evaded arrest 3 times but in the end, he got caught @ an airport lol Peru?! who knew? ๐Ÿคฃ i'm so glad the cook county state's attorney's office is doing their thing & bringing closure 2 this family. justice is served 4 sure! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Come on! 68 years old and still running? Like he was on the run for his life or something ๐Ÿคฃ. I mean, I get it, justice is finally served, but it's just so... long in coming. And who's to say this guy didn't have a good alibi all these years? Fingerprints don't necessarily prove anything and now he's gonna sit in jail for the next decade plus or more ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. What about his grandkids or whatever? They're probably just as confused as everyone else right now ๐Ÿ˜”.

๐Ÿค” finally some closure for the Projansky family after 18 long years! ๐Ÿ˜ข the fact that Barklow was able to evade arrest for so long is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, who does that? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ anyway, glad justice is being served now ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ hope he gets a fair trial and whatnot ๐Ÿคž

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ, finally some closure for Kent Projansky's family! ๐Ÿ˜” I'm so hyped that they've been able to catch David Barklow after all these years. It's wild how the case went cold at first but then got re-examined in 2017 and BAM! ๐Ÿ”ฅ They found those prints that linked him to the crime scene. And can you believe he tried to flee the country like three times? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Like, what was he thinking?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Glad that they've caught him and he's facing justice now. This is a huge win for law enforcement! ๐Ÿ’ช

I mean, think about it... 18 years on the run, just like a fugitive in a movie ๐Ÿ˜…. But seriously, it's crazy how this guy managed to evade capture for so long. It makes you wonder what kind of system we have in place that allows someone to do that? I'm not saying the cops were incompetent or anything, but it does raise questions about the effectiveness of our justice system.

And let's talk about accountability... if Barklow could just hop on a plane and disappear like that, how many other crimes did he commit while he was out? We need to make sure we're holding our law enforcement agencies accountable for their performance. And what about the family and friends of Kent Projansky? They deserve justice not just after 18 years, but also from those in power who should have been doing more to solve this case sooner.

It's all about politics... I mean, priorities ๐Ÿ˜Š. Who gets priority attention from law enforcement agencies? Those with deep pockets or connections, or the average Joe who's been wronged? It's a system that needs to be shaken up.

man i feel bad for david barklow he's been running from the law for like 18 years it's crazy how much his life has changed since then ๐Ÿคฏ i mean we dont no all the facts but its clear that hes made some big mistakes & now hes facing the music i think its awesome that his arrest wasnt until this year tho & that ppl r still working hard to get justice for kent projansky & his fam โœŠ๏ธ i guess you cud say david got a second chance 2 clear his name or make things right but its def not gonna b easy 4 him

I'm just thinking, 18 years is way too long for one guy to be on the run ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, what if this had happened in our own city? Can you imagine how frustrated Kent Projansky's family would've been? ๐Ÿค• But at least now they have closure and David Barklow's gonna face justice. It's like a big weight's been lifted off their shoulders ๐Ÿ˜Œ. And it just goes to show that even after all these years, the law can still catch up with people who think they're above the law. Good job to all the agencies involved in solving this case! ๐Ÿ‘
