FIFA gives Cristiano Ronaldo green light to play in World Cup, effectively ending his ban after suspended games. The Portugal forward has had a customary three-match ban for violent conduct commuted by FIFA's disciplinary committee to a one-game ban with two further matches suspended under a year's probation.
Ronaldo was sent off during Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Ireland on November 13, after he struck an elbow into the defender Dara O'Shea. The incident marked Ronaldo's first red card in a senior international match, a record that stood at 226 games prior to Tuesday's disciplinary decision.
FIFA's disciplinary code dictates that players must serve at least three matches or "an appropriate period of time" for assault, but Article 27 gives the FIFA judicial committee discretion to suspend this punishment. The committee has now opted to do so, effectively allowing Ronaldo to resume his World Cup campaign.
Under the new arrangement, Ronaldo will not have to serve the two remaining games if he commits another similar infringement during the next year's probationary period. However, if he does, the suspension will be automatically revoked and those matches must be played immediately at the next official match of Portugal.
The three-match ban remains subject to appeal by Ronaldo or his representatives.
