David Stearns is comfortable with Mets’ massive first-base gamble

The Mets are taking a calculated risk on Jorge Polanco at first base. Stearns' confidence in Polanco stems from their extensive research, including watching him play and working out with Mariners coaches Perry Hill and Manny Acta. While it's true that Polanco has only played first base for one pitch in his 12-year career, Stearns believes he can adapt to the position.

Polanco's defensive skills might be better suited for first base than other positions, as his arm is weaker but more reliable when positioned at first. Additionally, his hands and baseball instincts could translate well to the position. However, concerns remain about Polanco's speed, which may become less of an issue at first base compared to third.

The Mets' decision to sign Polanco may also be influenced by their interest in top prospect Ryan Clifford, who touched Triple-A Syracuse last season. If Polanco struggles, he could transition into a more DH-oriented role, allowing Clifford to solidify his spot at the position.

Other potential free agent options for first base include Ty France, Cody Bellinger, Luis Arráez, Rhys Hoskins, and Paul Goldschmidt. The Mets may also consider trade possibilities like Christian Walker from the Astros or Ryan Mountcastle from the Orioles.

Kai Correa's appointment as bench coach could provide Polanco with additional guidance on his new role. However, it remains to be seen whether Vientos can improve his playability at first base, particularly with regards to lateral range.

Ultimately, Stearns' gamble on Polanco may pay off if he develops into a quality first baseman. The outcome of this move will likely have significant implications for the Mets' infield depth and overall defensive capabilities.

I'm loving this signing 💡! I think Jorge Polanco is an awesome pick up, his baseball instincts are top-notch 🤩. I do agree that speed might be less of a concern at first base, so maybe they'll get to see how he handles the power side of the position ⚾️. It's also interesting to see what Kai Correa can bring to the team as bench coach, I've heard great things about his coaching style 🤝. I'm not too worried about Ryan Vientos' playability at first base, he'll get some time to figure it out and develop 🔄. The Mets are clearly trying to build a solid foundation for their infield, and if Polanco can deliver on that, they might just be onto something 🔥!

so I think it's dope they're giving Jorge Polanco a shot at first base 🤔, I mean, you gotta respect Stearns for being willing to take calculated risks on players like him. he might not be the fastest guy, but his hands and instincts could make up for that on the diamond 💪. plus, having Kai Correa as bench coach is a big plus, he's got experience and knows what it takes to help players adapt to new roles 🌟. now I'm curious to see how Ryan Clifford fares in the lineup if Polanco struggles – does he get the chance to prove himself? ⚾

I'm low-key hoping they can make it work at 1st base 🤞, but what I think is even more interesting is how it's gonna affect their lineup with Clifford making his MLB debut next season 🎉. The thought of Polanco potentially transitioning to a DH role if things don't click is pretty cool too 😎. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Polanco at the plate crushing it all day? 💪 On the other hand, I'm not sure how well Vientos will fit in as a backup 1st baseman 🤔.

idk about this one... seem like they're counting on polanco's skills but his speed is def a major concern 🤔 at 1b, you need to be able to cover some ground and he doesn't exactly have that advantage. but hey, perry hill & manny acta worked with him before so fingers crossed he can adapt! also not sure how much depth they really gained by trading away clifford, might've been a mistake 🤷‍♂️

I'm curious about this Jorge Polanco signing. Like, I get that the team thinks he can adapt to first base, but 12 years of playing other positions? That's a big leap. 🤔 I mean, what if he struggles? And what's up with Kai Correa being bench coach? Isn't he more of a infield specialist?

I'm also thinking about how this move affects the team's overall depth at first base. Are they really relying on Polanco to be their starter? If so, that means Ryan Clifford is gonna have a tough time getting playing time. 🤷‍♂️ And what about Vientos? Is he being dropped from the lineup because of this signing?

It's all about calculated risk and team strategy, but I'm not sure if it's worth the gamble. Polanco's defensive skills are a big plus, but can they translate to playing first base? We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out! 🤞

I mean, I think it's pretty cool that they're giving Jorge Polanco a shot at first base 🤔...like, Stearns has done his research and thinks he can adapt to the position, which is always interesting to see 💡...but I'm not sure about this Ryan Clifford guy being available for Polanco if things don't work out...I mean, it's like, one thing that could go either way, right? 😬

OMG 🤯 I'm so hyped about the Mets signing Jorge Polanco!!! 💥 They must've done their research, right? Watching him play and working out with those coaches is everything! 💪 He's got the skills, even if he hasn't played 1B much in his career. And Kai Correa as bench coach? 🙌 That's a good move too! Polanco could learn so much from him. I'm rooting for him to crush it at 1B and prove Stearns right 😎

I'm not sure about Jorge Polanco at first base 🤔. I mean, his defense is probably better suited there than anywhere else on the field, but can he really handle the whole 'being a first baseman'? He's been playing other positions for like 12 years now, so it's gonna be tough to adapt to this new one. And what about those speed concerns? Maybe they're right and he'll be fine, but I'm not convinced 🚫. The Mets are probably counting on him too much, if you ask me. They should've stuck with someone they know, like Ty France or Cody Bellinger... who are way more reliable in my opinion 😒.

I'm so glad the Mets are taking a chance on Jorge Polanco... because clearly they wouldn't want to actually build a solid team around their real prospects 🙄. I mean, who needs Ryan Clifford when you've got a guy with "only" one pitch of experience at first base? 💁‍♂️ And let's be real, if Polanco struggles, he'll just get to play more DH and we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the Mets aren't wasting their time on actual talent 🤷‍♂️. I'm also loving the sound of Kai Correa as bench coach... because what could possibly go wrong with that? 😒

🤔 imagine jorge polanco at 1st base with a diagram:
```
+-------+
POL
ANCO
+-------+
```
his weak arm is kinda like a small dot (⋄) compared to other positions, but it's more reliable when he's at 1st base. his hands and instincts are super useful for snagging throws! 🎯
but speed is a concern... maybe not as big of a deal at 1st base? 💨 anyway, the mets' decision might be influenced by their other plans, like signing ryan clifford or trading for christian walker 🔄
what do u think about polanco's chances at first base? will he adapt? 🤔

The Mets are taking a risk by signing Jorge Polanco at first base 🤔. They've done their research, but it's still a gamble. I think they're right to give him a shot, though - his defensive skills could be a great asset behind the plate or in the infield. His weaknesses, like his speed, might not be as big of an issue at first base. The only thing that worries me is that if Polanco struggles, Ryan Clifford might have to step up and play first base instead 🤦‍♂️. Other options like Ty France are still out there, but I think the Mets are making a smart move by giving Polanco a chance to prove himself 👍

lol what's next, the Mets gonna try out a catcher who only played 10 innings in his 12-year career? jk kinda sorta but seriously Stearns is taking a big risk on Polanco, hoping his hands and instincts will translate to first base. it's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole... or in this case, a hitter with speed issues at a position where you need to be able to scoop throws 🤔🏆

SO I'M THINKING STEARNs IS MAKING A REALLY BIG MOVE WITH POLANCO AT FIRST BASE!!! 🤔💥 HE'S GOT SOME SERIOUS RESEARCH IN ON THE GUY AND I HAVE TO ADMIT, IT COULD PAY OFF! 💪🏽 POLANCO DOES SEEM LIKE HE COULD BRING SOME DECENT SKILLS TO THE POSITION, ESPECIALLY DEFENSIVELY. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW HOW IT'S ALL GOING TO PLAY OUT IN PRACTICE 🤞💨

I'm down for the Mets trying out Jorge Polanco at 1B... but I've got some reservations 🤔. Like, let's be real, his speed is a major concern - it's not like he can just magically become a 4-bagger in the MLB 😂. And what if Vientos doesn't quite gel with him? I mean, we saw what happened with Luis Guillermo Marquez at first base last year... 🤦‍♂️ Still, I trust Stearns to make some calculated moves. But if Polanco struggles, I hope they're prepared for Clifford to step up and show what he's got 💪🏼. The other free agent options are looking pretty solid too - I'm intrigued by Rhys Hoskins! 🤔

I'm not sure I'd go all in on Jorge Polanco at 1st base... don't get me wrong, he's got some solid skills, but what if it doesn't work out? I mean, his speed is pretty crucial at this position, and the Mets are basically trading one issue (Clifford) for another. They've got some other decent options on the market, like France or Hoskins... wouldn't want to rush into a decision without seeing how these others play out 🤔💡
