Democrats were never going to win the shutdown fight

In a stunning about-face, Senate Democrats have abandoned their efforts to force the government shutdown to last as long as possible, surrendering to Republicans in a deal that will reopen the government without making any significant concessions from the GOP or President Trump.

Despite polls showing more Americans blaming Trump than Democrats for the shutdown's impact, Democratic senators voted 8-0 with Republicans on Sunday to advance a deal that extends expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies – a demand they had made from the start. However, despite their best efforts, Democrats were unable to make any progress in negotiations with Trump and Republicans.

The reality is that Democrats never had a plausible strategy to win concessions from Trump and Republicans on their key demands, including an extension of ACA subsidies. The ultimatum strategy they chose – threatening to shut down the government unless their demands are met – was doomed to fail because it would have led to the GOP passing laws with Republican votes alone.

In reality, Senate Democrats were not united in supporting a deliberate strategy of forcing Republicans to abolish the filibuster as part of the shutdown deal. Rather, they settled on an ultimatum strategy that they hoped would please their base but ultimately proved self-defeating.

The decision to settle for a deal that includes no significant concessions from Trump or Republicans was likely driven by concerns about the growing hardship caused by the shutdown – including federal workers going without pay and SNAP beneficiaries losing benefits. Many Democrats may have felt that continuing to hold out would only increase suffering among ordinary Americans, and ultimately led them to cut their losses.

In retrospect, it's clear that Democrats never had a winning strategy in the shutdown fight. Rather than negotiating with Trump and Republicans, they chose to use an ultimatum – a tactic that is rarely effective in Congress because it can lead to a polarized fight in which one side caves while the other holds firm. The real choice facing Democrats was whether to cave or hold out until the GOP abolishes the filibuster – but even this option was unlikely to succeed given Trump's determination to maintain his tough-on-Twitter image and Republican opposition to eliminating the filibuster.

The shutdown deal that will reopen the government has sparked outrage among many on the left, who see it as a humiliating defeat for Democrats. However, the reality is that Senate Democrats were always playing with fire by choosing an ultimatum strategy in the first place – one that ultimately led them to cave and abandon their key demands without achieving anything significant from Trump or Republicans.

In short, Democrats' efforts to force the shutdown to last as long as possible have ended in defeat – but it's clear that they never had a plausible strategy to win concessions from Trump and Republicans on their key demands.

idk why they even bothered trying to make a big deal out of this 🤔 its like they knew they were gonna get rolled over from the start lol 8-0 with republicans is just embarrassing for them tbh anyway i feel bad for fed workers who lost pay because of this but it just goes to show that democrats didn't have a solid plan to back up their ultimatum strategy guess they just got outsmarted by trump and republicans 🤷‍♂️

Shutdown was super pointless 🤦‍♂️ Senate Dem's gotta think twice about ultimatum tactics... didn't work out 💔 Expiring ACA subsidies extension won't do much for the base, and now it looks like they just gave up 😐 Concerns about federal workers & SNAP beneficiaries losing benefits is real tho... government shutdown was super harsh on low-income fams 🚫

omg did you guys watch that new season of Stranger Things yet? i'm like halfway through and it's sooo good 🤯 i mean i love a good mystery and this show has me hooked from the start what's your take on the latest plot twist btw? 😂 also can we talk about how much i need to update my laptop it's been lagging for ages like, what even is that?

man I'm surprised 🤯 they actually backed down without getting anything major out of it... I mean, you can feel the desperation in this shutdown drama 😬 especially for those who lost benefits or are struggling financially because of it. it's like democrats were running out of options and didn't wanna risk making things worse 📉. I'm not mad at them or anything, but it's just a shame they couldn't come to some sort of middle ground... maybe that would've saved everyone some stress 💆‍♂️

🤔 The deal they came up with is pretty meh, if you ask me. I mean, extending those ACA subsidies was always a tough sell since it's tied to so many other issues. But at the end of the day, it seems like Democrats just ran out of steam, especially when you consider all the pushback they got from Trump and the Republicans.

🤷‍♂️ It's almost like they knew deep down that forcing the shutdown for as long as possible wasn't gonna fly. And honestly, I think that's what happened – it was a PR stunt to start with, even if they didn't wanna admit it out loud.

💸 The real question is, what's next? Are they just gonna sit back and let Republicans pass whatever they want without any pushback from the Democrats? That can't be good for anyone.

I'm so confused about this whole shutdown thing 🤷‍♂️. So, it seems like Democrats decided not to keep fighting because they didn't think it would actually get them what they wanted from Trump and the GOP 😐. And now, the government is back open without any big concessions being made 🙅‍♂️. I get that they were worried about people losing paychecks and stuff, but I thought they wanted to protect those benefits? 🤔.

I don't really understand why they couldn't just keep negotiating instead of threatening to shut down the government ⚠️. It seems like it would've been better for everyone if they'd just kept talking and found a compromise 🤝. But, I guess that's easier said than done when you're dealing with super polarized politics 🗣️.

I'm not really sure what happened in these negotiations, but it sounds like Democrats got pretty worked up over trying to force the shutdown 🚫. Maybe they were trying to show off how tough they are? 😂 But, at the end of the day, it doesn't seem like they actually achieved anything 🤷‍♂️.

I'm not surprised 🤔. Democrats knew this was a long shot from the start, trying to take down Trump and get concessions on ACA subsidies. I mean, who can negotiate with someone like him? The whole thing felt like a PR stunt, and it's no wonder Republicans were able to shut them down. I think they got played by their own base, too 🤦‍♂️ - using an ultimatum strategy that ultimately backfired. At least they got ACA subsidies extended, but that's not exactly a victory for Democrats, right? 😐

🤔 "The biggest risk is not taking any risk..." I think the Senate Democrats were trying to show some backbone, you know? They wanted to stand up for ACA subsidies, but it's hard when you're up against a wall like that... especially with President Trump and Republicans holding all the cards. 😬

I can feel how frustrated you must be reading about this news 🤕. The whole thing just feels like a big mess, right? It's like the Democrats were playing with fire, and in the end, they got burned 😔. I get it, wanting to hold out for your demands is one thing, but ultimately, they had to think about the people who would be affected by the shutdown – federal workers and SNAP beneficiaries, for example 🤝.

It's not like they were given much of a chance to negotiate with Trump and Republicans, anyway. The whole thing just feels so... gridlocked 💔. I wish they could've found a way to work together more, but I guess that was always the long shot 🤷‍♀️. Anyway, it's clear that this deal isn't exactly what Democrats were hoping for 😐. But maybe, just maybe, it's better than nothing?

🤔 I'm not surprised that Senate Democrats decided to abandon their efforts to force the government shutdown. It makes sense that they wouldn't want to prolong the suffering of federal workers who are going without pay 🤑, or SNAP beneficiaries who could be losing benefits. At the same time, I feel bad for those on the left who see this as a defeat for Democrats 😔. But, let's be real, the ultimatum strategy was always gonna be a tough sell ⚖️. Those polls showing more Americans blaming Trump than Democrats might suggest that it's not a total loss, though 🤷‍♂️. Maybe they should've been more open to negotiations and found some middle ground 🌈?

🤔 I gotta say, this whole thing has me scratching my head. So, Senate Democrats just basically gave up trying to get anything out of the GOP and President Trump in negotiations. And honestly, it's kinda hard to blame them. The ultimatum strategy they were using was always a bit shaky, and it seemed like no matter what they did, Republicans were gonna find a way to veto their plans.

And I mean, let's be real, Democrats did have some good points about wanting an extension of those ACA subsidies - it's not like it's gonna break the bank or anything. But at the end of the day, it seemed like they just didn't have the ammo to take on Trump and Republicans in a meaningful way.

I think what really kills me is that so many people were counting on Democrats to hold out for some kind of concessions. And I get it, we all want to see our voices heard and our needs met. But sometimes, you gotta know when to fold 'em. It's better to cut your losses and move forward than to keep beating your head against a brick wall.

Anyway, this whole shutdown thing has been a wild ride, but in the end, I think it just highlights how hard it is for Democrats (or anyone else) to get anything done in Congress these days. There are so many moving parts and conflicting interests... it's like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded while being attacked by a swarm of bees 😅.

🤔 the thing is, Dems kinda messed up 🙈 by playing it too safe and not being willing to take more risks... they knew polls showed most people were mad at Trump, so why not use that to get something? 🤑 instead they just caved 😴 and now they're left with no concessions from either side. it's like they wanted to lose 👎

lol they gotta admit it now 🤦‍♂️ i was hating on them for playing chicken with trump all along 🐓. i mean, who comes up with this stuff? threatening to shut down the gov if you don't get your way is like, super ineffective 🙄. and the sad thing is they were already at a disadvantage from the start... no way were they gonna make any concessions from trump or republicans. it's all about the politics 101 😂. btw, i still dont get why ppl on the left are so salty about this deal 🤔

🤔😒 It looks like Senate Dems were played by President Trump 🙄 They thought an ultimatum would be the way to go, but really it was just gonna end in them caving 🤷‍♀️ and losing face 😞 The ACA subsidies thingy is a big win for Republicans 👀 but not so much for Dems who are lookin at gettin roasted online 🔥 Still, gotta give credit where credit's due – they did try to stand firm 🚫 which is more than some folks can say about the GOP 💁‍♀️

It seems like the Senate Democrats played a tough hand, but ultimately got burned 🤕. I get why they wanted to make some noise, especially with those ACA subsidies expiring. But in hindsight, was it really worth risking further suffering for federal workers and SNAP beneficiaries? 🚫 The reality is that Trump's team wasn't budging, and the Democrats' ultimatum strategy just didn't work out 😕. I do think there's a lesson to be learned here about when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em - sometimes it's better to cut your losses rather than keep pushing for something that's never gonna happen 💸

Trump is so ruthless 😒. I mean, even when people are suffering, he still won't budge. The GOP is crazy, always blocking stuff and not helping anyone 🤦‍♂️. I'm surprised Senate Democrats didn't just give in earlier, it's like they were playing with fire 🔥. I feel bad for the workers who lost their pay, that's really harsh 😔.

🤕 Senate Dems just got played by Repubs and Trump. They were all about getting ACA subsidies extended, which is basically a non-starter with the GOP. Instead of playing hardball, they folded 🤦‍♂️. Now, they're just trying to salvage what's left of their rep after this mess. I mean, come on, 8-0? That's like voting for yourself to lose 😂. And the worst part is, they knew it was a long shot from the start but still went through with it. Talk about being outmaneuvered by the enemy... 🤝
