Detroit’s Motor City Brewing Works to ‘pause’ after 30+ years - Detroit Metro Times

Motor City Brewing Works, Detroit's Oldest Brewery, Pauses Operations After 31 Years

After three decades of serving up craft beer and pizzas in the heart of Detroit's Cass Corridor, Motor City Brewing Works has announced that it will be "taking a break" from operations until further notice. The brewery, which was founded in 1994 by craft beer aficionado John Linardos, is shutting down due to the termination of its historic thermal steam line, which powered the facility.

The decision comes as no surprise to fans of the brewery, who have known it for its quirky brews like Ghettoblaster Ale and Notorious DRIPA. Motor City Brewing Works was also renowned for hosting art exhibitions and producing CDs featuring local bands. The brewery's second location in Detroit's Avenue of Fashion closed its doors in 2023.

For now, the taproom will remain open until February 8th, where visitors can raise a glass and pay their respects to the iconic brewery. A digital montage of historic photos documenting the evolution of Motor City Brewing Works will be on display during this time. After that, the taproom will "pause" and await further plans for the future of the brand.

Motor City Brewing Works' decision to take a break is a poignant reminder of the impact that Detroit's breweries have had on the city's history and culture. The brewery's contributions to changing Michigan's brewing laws are no longer sustainable without its historic steam line, which has been terminated as part of the brewery's modernization efforts.

While fans may be saddened by the news, Motor City Brewing Works is urging patrons to "come raise a glass, share a story, and help us celebrate MCBW's small contribution to the Cass Corridor and all those that helped make it happen." The future plans for the brand are still unclear, but with its legacy intact, Motor City Brewing Works' impact on Detroit's craft beer scene will be remembered for years to come.

I don’t usually comment but I'm kinda sad about this 🤕. Motor City Brewing Works was always a unique spot in the city and it's weird to think that it's just gonna pause operations like that. I mean, who doesn't love Ghettoblaster Ale? 😂 It's not just about the beer though, it's about the whole experience of going there and being part of the community. The fact that they're encouraging people to come in and share stories is really cool, but now that taproom will be closed until February... I don't know what's gonna happen after that 🤔.

awww man 🤕 motor city brewing works has been a dets favorite brewery for like forever its so sad they gotta shut down their taproom for good 🚫 but i guess its cool that they're gonna leave a legacy behind 🙏 and who knows maybe they'll come back stronger than ever in the future 💪

I'm kinda bummed out about MCBW closing down 🤕. I mean, it's been around since '94 and was always a staple in the Cass Corridor. They had some of the best beers and pizzas in town... who would've thought that a thermal steam line was gonna be their downfall? 😂 Still, gotta respect their decision to pause operations for now. Guess this is one way to give those historic photos a chance to shine 📸. Anyone know what's next for MCBW? Will they come back stronger than ever or just fade into the brew scene's history books? ⏰

It's kinda sad when old places close down, u know? 🤕 Like, i've been to Motor City Brewing Works a few times and it was always so much fun, especially with all the weird beers they had on tap 🍺👍. But, i guess it's not surprising that they'd have to shut down now - I mean, who can afford to keep running an old place like that? 💸 It's like when you're trying to fix up your old car and you gotta spend all the money just to get by 🚗. Anyway, yeah... Motor City Brewing Works has been a big part of Detroit's history for 31 years, so it's def worth showing some love before they close up shop 👍

🤔 So sad to hear that Motor City Brewing Works is shutting down after 31 years... I mean, who doesn't love Ghettoblaster Ale? 🍺 It's crazy how a historic steam line can just get terminated like that, must've cost them a pretty penny. Anyway, gotta respect the decision, they did their thing and now it's time to move on. The fact that they're leaving up the taproom till Feb 8th is actually kinda cool, gonna be nice to reminisce about all the good times 🎉 And I love how they're asking fans to come share stories and help celebrate... might just become a legendary spot for Detroit beer history 👍

Ugh I'm so sad 2 hear about MCBW closin down 🤕 it was like one of those places where u could just hang out & enjoy a beer or pizza without feelin the hassle of school projects all day lol. but i guess it's only natural for businesses 2 have 2 close up shop at some point...like how my physics homework is always due soon lol. still, Motor City Brewing Works was like a Detroit institution 🎨 & its legacy will def be remembered for years 2 come.

🤔 I'm like, totally bummed out that MCBW is closing down 🍺😢 but at the same time, I kinda get it? Like, they needed to modernize and stuff, and now they're just gonna pause and see what happens next? 🤷‍♂️ It's all a bit weird, you know? 🎉 On one hand, Motor City Brewing Works was like, this iconic part of Detroit's history and culture, but on the other hand, they were always kinda pushing boundaries and taking risks with their brews, so maybe that's why they're having to close down? 😬 I don't know, man... 🤔
