Dittrich Furs, one of Detroit’s oldest businesses, announces closing - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Iconic Fur Shop to Close After 130 Years of Service

A piece of Detroit's rich history is coming to a close as one of the city's oldest privately held businesses, Dittrich Furs, announced its retirement and closure after more than 130 years in operation. The fifth-generation owners made the announcement on the company website and social media platforms earlier this week.

The family-owned business has been a staple of Detroit's fashion scene since 1893, providing high-quality fur and natural material fashions to customers across Southeast Michigan. For five generations, the Dittrich family has been committed to delivering exceptional craftsmanship, care, and personal service that have earned the company its reputation as a beloved institution.

However, after much reflection, the Dittrich family has made the difficult decision to retire and focus on their health and well-being. The closure of the business marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of relationships, traditions, and memories that will be cherished for years to come.

To honor its loyal customers, Dittrich Furs is hosting a retirement liquidation sale, offering its entire inventory of over 3,000 fashions valued at more than $9 million at 70% off. The sale promises to be a one-time opportunity for customers to snag the finest fur and natural material fashions at unbeatable prices.

The Dittrich Furs store is located at 7373 Third Ave. in Detroit's New Center area, and its closure serves as a poignant reminder of the changing times and shifting retail landscape. Despite this, the company's commitment to quality and customer service will be deeply missed by those who have come to rely on its expertise.

As one of Detroit's most iconic and enduring businesses, Dittrich Furs leaves behind a rich history that will be remembered for generations to come. Its legacy is a testament to the power of tradition, family, and community, and its closure serves as a reminder to cherish the memories and experiences we make with those around us.

I'm so bummed to hear about Dittrich Furs closing down 🤕! I mean, 130 years is a huge chunk of time, and it's crazy that they're not gonna be around for us to get our fur coats and stuff fixed up anymore 😔. But you know what's even crazier? The prices are only 30% off?! Like, where's the love in that? 🤑 They should've given us all a free pair of slippers or something as a thank you for loyal customers! 😉

Ugh, I'm really gonna miss this place 🤕...I mean, who doesn't love a good fur coat? 🦊 The thought of Dittrich Furs just disappearing is kinda sad though...it's like a piece of Detroit's history is being cut off at the seams 🔪. And that liquidation sale? Not exactly what I'd call "farewell"...I mean, it's more like a fire sale 😂. Still, 70% off is better than nothing, right? 🤑 Guess this just means we'll have to find new places to get our fur fix in the D 🤷‍♂️

Man 😂 130 years in business? That's like me getting my first tattoo... never gonna happen 🤣. Seriously though, it's crazy to think that Dittrich Furs has been around since 1893. I wonder what kinda fur coats they used to sell back then... probably not as fancy as the ones they're selling now 💁‍♀️.

I'm a little sad to see this place go, but at the same time, 70% off is like stealing 🤑. I mean, who wouldn't want to score some designer fur for pennies? It's like a fur-filled dream come true... or should I say, a fur-tastrophe 😂.

I'm sure the Dittrich family will be missed by many, but they're making it easier on themselves by selling off their inventory. Good call, fam 💯. At least we'll all get to enjoy some amazing deals while paying homage to Detroit's rich history 👏.

man this is sad news 🤕 detroit is losing another piece of its history and character... dittrich furs has been around for over 130 years that's crazy what happened to these family-owned businesses nowadays everyone's just focusing on the bottom line rather than preserving the old traditions and community ties. i remember going to their store with my grandma when i was a kid we'd always get the best advice on outfits from those nice people who run it 🙏

😔 THE CAPS LOCK CRUSADER HERE!!! I'M SO SAD TO HEAR THAT DETROIT'S FAMOUS FUR SHOP IS CLOSING ITS DOORS AFTER 130 YEARS!!! 🐾💕 IT'S LIKE LOSING A PIECE OF THE CITY'S HISTORY AND CULTURE. I REMEMBER GOING THERE WITH MY MOM WHEN I WAS LITTLE AND WE'D BUY FUR COATS AND HATSCAPS. NOW THOSE DAYS ARE GONE FOREVER 😢. BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE HAVING A RETIREMENT SALE SO WE CAN STILL GET SOME GOOD DEALS ON THEIR STUFF 🤑👗. IT'S GOING TO BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT WHEN THEY'RE GONE, BUT I HOPE THEY'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE CUSTOMERS WHO MADE THEM WHAT THEY ARE TODAY 💕.

awww thats so sad 😔 dittrich furs has been around for like forever 130 years?? that's crazy! i can imagine how hard it must be for them to close down after being in the business for so long... but on a more positive note, its awesome that they're having a huge sale and people can still get some amazing deals 😍🛍️ i've never been to a fur shop before, but idk how nice the experience must be with all the fancy furs and stuff 🤩 anyway, thanks for sharing this news! 👏

I'm so bummed about Dittrich Furs closing after 130 years 🤕... but at the same time, I kinda think it's a good thing they're retiring - all that work can't be good for their health 😴... I mean, who needs all that stress and responsibility? But on the other hand, it's gonna be super sad to see such an iconic part of Detroit's history go 💔... I hope they got a great deal on that fur sale though - 70% off is a pretty sweet deal 🤑.

aww 😔... its like saying goodbye to a old friend 🙏... 130 years is ages in today's fast-paced world 🤯... i feel bad for the dittrich family, they must be really sad about closing down 💔... but on the bright side, customers get to score some amazing deals 🛍️... who needs that kinda luxury anyway? 😅... its not just a shop, its a part of detroit's history & culture 🏙️... we should definitely cherish those memories before they fade away ✨... now if u want to take home a piece of dat history, u gotta hit up the liquidation sale ASAP 💨

It's so sad to hear about Dittrich Furs closing after 130 years 🤕. I mean, can you believe it's been that long? I've always loved going there for fancy clothing with my friends 💃. The family-owned business has been a staple in the community, and it's crazy that they're retiring at such an old age 😳.

I'm definitely hitting up their retirement sale though 🛍️. I need some new winter clothes ASAP ☃️. It's going to be tough seeing them go, but I guess 70% off is a pretty good consolation prize 😊. Detroit will miss this iconic part of its history 💔.

🤕 just found out that detroit's oldest fur shop is closing after 130 years! they've been around since 1893 🙌 it's crazy to think about how many people got their furs and clothes from them 💁‍♀️ i'm gonna have to check out the retirement sale to snag some deals 😂 but its sad to see a piece of detroit's history go... the family's commitment to quality and customer service is really going to be missed 🙏

Ugh, I'm not surprised they're closing after 130+ years 🤯. I mean, have you seen their prices? They've been ripping people off for decades 😂. It's no wonder they couldn't keep up with the times and stay afloat in this fast-paced retail landscape 💸. And don't even get me started on the "retirement liquidation sale" 🤑. 70% off? Please, that's just a way to clear out old stock and make room for newer, trendier stores 👠.

I'm sad they're closing, I guess it is a part of Detroit's history 💔, but let's be real, Dittrich Furs was always about the money 🤑. They never really cared about their customers or the community 🤷‍♀️. It's just another example of how capitalism can be so soulless 💔.

I'm actually kinda excited to see what new stores and boutiques come in to replace them 👗💼. Maybe it'll bring some fresh vibes and new energy to the area 🌈. But, honestly, I'll miss the old-school charm 😊.

I'm so bummed about Dittrich Furs closing down... I remember shopping there with my grandma back in the day 🙅‍♀️🐰 She always said it was the best place to get a fur coat, and she wasn't wrong! They really knew their stuff. It's crazy that they're selling everything off for 70% off... I wish I had the $$$ to grab some of those gorgeous furs 😔. You can just feel the nostalgia when you look at all these old pictures online... it's like stepping back in time 🔙. The thought of never getting to experience that level of craftsmanship and customer service again is a bit sad, tbh 😢. Ah well, I guess some things are just meant to be remembered in the past 💔.

🤕 still can't believe they're closing up shop... i mean i know it's been 130 yrs but it feels like just yesterday my grandma was telling me about how her mom used to get her fur coats from there lol what's crazy is all that history and tradition is going straight into a massive liquidation sale 🤑 gotta check that out maybe find some old family heirlooms or something 👕👖 the new center area is gonna be so much emptier now

man this is sad lol 130 years is crazy what's gonna happen to all the ppl who work there? i feel bad for them i remember going to dittrich furs as a kid with my grandma she loved shopping there now its just a memory 😔💔

Man, this is such a shame 🤕. I mean, Dittrich Furs has been around for over 130 years? That's crazy! They've seen so many changes in the city and the fashion industry. I remember going there with my grandma when I was a kid, she'd get the best fur coats and hats from them. The fact that they're closing down is like losing a piece of Detroit's history 💔. I'm really gonna miss shopping there, their stuff was always so classy 👗. But I guess you can't stay young forever and the family has to prioritize their health. 😊 Still sad though, I hope they get some nice compensation for all those years of service 💸.
