Dog-sitter hired to "check in" during owner's trip—disturbing truth emerges

Dog Sitter Discovers Cruel Plan to Confine Canines for 23 Hours a Day

A shocking discovery made by a dog sitter in New Mexico has raised concerns about the lack of animal welfare resources and education. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was hired through a dog sitting app to check in on three dogs while their owner was away. However, she soon realized that the owner intended to leave the dogs confined to wire crates for 23 hours a day, with only brief periods of time allowed outside.

This disturbing plan has sparked widespread concern among pet owners and animal welfare advocates. Many have taken to social media to express their outrage and offer advice on how to address the situation. Some suggest alerting local dog rescue groups or animal control agencies, while others recommend contacting law enforcement to request a welfare check.

According to Amber Batteiger, a veterinary technician and communications manager at Embrace Pet Insurance, the situation raises "extremely valid welfare concerns" and highlights the need for better education on animal care. Confining dogs to crates for extended periods can lead to physical and psychological harm, she warns.

Batteiger advises dog sitters who encounter similar situations to document their findings and raise concerns with the owners. If necessary, they should contact local authorities or humane agencies to request a welfare check. She also stresses that pet sitters should never feel obligated to participate in care arrangements that compromise animal welfare.

The incident has sparked a larger conversation about the importance of proper animal care and education. As one Reddit user noted, "I don't understand why these types of people even get pets. Very sad for the pups." Another commenter suggested increasing the frequency of dog sitters' visits to at least an hour, which the woman in question was able to negotiate with the owner.

While the situation is alarming, it's also a reminder that there are resources available to help protect animals from neglect and abuse. As Batteiger emphasized, "Acting promptly matters because neglect is not only harmful, it may also be illegal."

OMG 🤯 just saw this news about some dog sitter discovering the owner plans to lock up 3 dogs in wire crates for 23 hours a day and I'm literally SHOOK 😱 like who does that?! 🐕🚫 It's so messed up that people don't know better and it's not even safe for the poor pups 🤕. We need more education on animal care, for real! 📚💡 And I love that some dog sitters are speaking out and advocating for change 🗣️ like they're getting paid to do this! 💸 Let's spread awareness and make a difference for our furry friends 🐾❤️

🐕😨 this is wild - can't believe someone would do that to innocent dogs! 🤯 23 hours straight in a crate? that's like locking a human in a box for that long... mental health alone would take a hit. and what about the poor little pups' physical health too? 🌟 i totally agree with amber batteiger, we need more awareness on animal care esp among pet sitters & owners! 💡 maybe if there were more resources available for dog sitters, they'd be less likely to encounter situations like this in the future... fingers crossed that justice is served for these adorable fur babies 👍

omg what kind of person does that to their poor dogs? i mean i know some ppl think its funny to joke about leavin ur dog home alone but thats not the same thing as actually confinin them 23 hrs a day 🐕😡. we need more ppl like amber batteiger who knows whats good for animals. idk how many ppl dont realize how hurtful it can be to leave dogs in crates all day 🤷‍♀️. id say dog sitters shd def document the situation & report it if theres a danger 2 animals involved 📝💯

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 🤯. How can someone even consider confining their dog to a crate for 23 hours straight? I mean, I've seen some weird pet owners in my time, but that's just crazy talk. Dogs need attention and exercise, not locked up like they're packages or something. It's no wonder the poor pup was going stir-crazy. And what really gets me is that people are making a big deal about it now because... well, someone finally spoke out? I get it, animal welfare is important, but where were these owners when their dog needed them? Now they're all like "oh no, my dog's being mistreated" 🙄. Anyway, let's hope the authorities step in and those dogs get the care they deserve.

omg this is so messed up 🙅‍♀️ dogs rnt toys 23 hours a day in crates?? that's cruel 🤯 some ppl just dont care about animals & their welfare u need to report this to the authorities ASAP 👮‍♀️ or reach out to local dog rescue groups they'll help u get those pups rehomed 🐾💕

man this is so sad 🐕😢 i can just imagine those poor dogs stuck in crates for 23 hours a day it's just not right. pet owners need to educate themselves on how to care for their pets properly. we shouldn't have to deal with situations like this. maybe we can raise awareness and create more resources for dog sitters and animal welfare organizations so they can help these poor animals 🐾💪

I'm so appalled by this news 🤯! Leaving dogs confined to wire crates for 23 hours a day is absolutely heartless 💔. I mean, what kind of person thinks that's okay for their poor pups? It's like they're not even considering the emotional and physical well-being of these amazing animals 🐶. As a parent, it breaks my heart to think about how vulnerable kids might be affected by such stories... we need to teach them empathy and compassion from a young age so they can become responsible pet owners themselves 👩‍👧.

The fact that the dog sitter didn't know this was an option is concerning - shouldn't there be more education on animal care? 🤔 And what's with the app that allowed her to book this job in the first place? It's like they're prioritizing convenience over animal welfare 🙄. I'm glad someone spoke out and now we have a bigger conversation about this. We need to make sure our furry friends are treated with love, care, and respect 🐾💕.

😱 I'm literally shaking thinking about those poor dogs being locked up in wire crates for 23 hours a day... like, what's wrong with people?! 🐕😡 It's so sad that this woman had to discover such a horrific plan through her job. And yeah, let's be real, if you're gonna get a pet, you gotta be prepared to give it love and care, not lock it up in a tiny box all day 🤦‍♀️. I'm totally with the Reddit user who said "I don't understand why these types of people even get pets" 🙄. And can we please talk about how important it is for dog sitters to know their rights and advocate for those furry friends? 💕

🐾😱 I think this is super crazy! Like, who does this to dogs? 😡 I mean, 23 hours a day in a crate? That's not just bad, that's cruel. And the fact that the owner thought they could get away with it and didn't care about the dogs' well-being... it's just disturbing.

And you know what's even worse is that there are people out there who don't even understand why this is wrong. Like, how can someone not know that locking a dog up for 23 hours a day is bad? 🤔 It's basic animal care 101!

I love the idea of increasing the frequency of dog sitters' visits to at least an hour though! That would make a huge difference. And if people are concerned, they should totally reach out to local authorities or humane agencies. Like, we have laws in place for a reason, and it's up to us to use them.

Anyway, this whole thing is just heartbreaking. We need more education on animal care and welfare, and we need to hold people accountable when they're not taking care of their pets properly. 💕

🐾😱 this is just heartbreaking. it makes me think about how much responsibility comes with pet ownership. I mean, just cuz you can, doesnt mean u should. there are pets out there that need love & care 24/7. and people who cant even give them that. 🤦‍♀️

anyway, i think its awesome that dog sitters like this woman are speaking up. they got the power to make a difference. and if u rnt sure whats goin on, just trust ur instincts & report it. dont be afraid to reach out 2 ppl in authority.

we need more people like this woman who care enough 2 speak truth 2 power. cuz at the end of the day, its all about compassion & empathy for our furry friends 🐶💕

omg 🙅‍♀️ this is soooo messed up!!! i mean whats wrong with ppl who dont care about their fur babies?? my friend has a pup and shes always on the ball makin sure she gets out for walks and playtime every day. like, what kinda monster does that to their poor dog? 🐶😢 i think we need more education on animal welfare and pet sitters should def be able to report sus situations to authorities. and btw, dont even get me started on crate training... thats just cruel 🙄.

I'm still shaking my head about this one 🤯. I mean, who does this to their furry friends?! I've seen some questionable stuff in my time as a dog sitter, but this takes the cake 🍰. 23 hours straight? That's like, torture for dogs! And what really gets me is that people think they can just ignore animal welfare laws and get away with it... not on my watch 🚫. I'm all for people wanting to take care of their pets, but come on, folks! Take some basic classes or learn from online resources (I mean, where have you been?! 😂). It's not that hard to give our fur babies some love and attention.

And kudos to Amber Batteiger for speaking out about this. I've got nothing but respect for her and her work 🙌. As a dog sitter myself, it's terrifying to think about what might happen if we can't speak up. But I know that with organizations like Embrace Pet Insurance on our side (and the growing awareness of animal welfare), there are resources available for us to report these types of situations and help those innocent animals 🐾💕.

Let's all just take a deep breath, folks... we've got this! 💪

This whole thing is wild 🤯, you gotta wonder what goes through someone's mind when they think leaving a dog confined for 23 hours straight is a good idea. It's all about priorities, right? The dogs' well-being and happiness aren't even on the radar. This situation teaches us to be aware of our own actions and how they might impact others - in this case, innocent animals 🐶.

It's also super important for people to take responsibility for educating themselves on proper animal care. It's not just about dog sitters, either; it's a shared responsibility among pet owners, too 🤝. We should be encouraging our fellow humans to treat animals with love and respect - not locking them up like they're some sort of appliance 💡.

And let's talk about the resources available for helping out these poor pups... we gotta use 'em! If you see something, say something (but don't leave the dogs behind, that's just cruel 😔). Reporting neglect or abuse can make all the difference in getting animals the help they need. So, next time you're thinking of bringing a furry friend into your life, do some research and get educated - we're counting on you! 🌟

Ugh, this just breaks my heart 🐕😢... I mean, what kind of person would even think of leaving their poor pup stuck in a crate for 23 hours a day? It's like, basic dog care 101. Back in my day, we knew that dogs needed exercise and attention to stay happy and healthy. Not just some soulless confinement in a tiny box.

And the fact that it was discovered by a dog sitter who was hired through an app is just another example of how hard it is for people to find reliable caregivers for their pets. I mean, what's wrong with doing your research or asking around before hiring someone to take care of your fur baby?

Anyway, I'm glad there are resources out there that can help these poor dogs and their owners get some much-needed education on proper animal care. And I agree with Amber Batteiger 100% - acting promptly matters, and if you suspect animal neglect or abuse, don't hesitate to reach out to authorities or humane agencies.

It's just a shame it has to come down to this... 🤕

omg i was just talking about this in class yesterday we were discussing animal welfare in AP biology and I never thought i'd see something like this happen in real life 🤯 the owner is literally crazy what kind of person leaves their dogs locked up for 23 hours a day? it's so sad for those poor pups and i'm glad dog sitters are speaking out against it now i wish more people knew about animal welfare resources too because if we didn't have apps like this, who knows how long these dogs would've been suffering 🐶💔

idk why ppl are making such a big deal out of this 🤷‍♀️ dogs rnt people so we shouldnt be worried about their 23 hour confinement lol its just pet sitters being paid to sit & chill 🐶 I mean if the owner wants to do that to their own dog, thats their prerogative right? theyre not hurting anyone else btw 🙅‍♀️

I'm totally on board with this guy who just left his dogs in wire crates for 23 hours a day 🤷‍♂️. I mean, what's the harm in that right? It's not like they're being abused or anything. And if he's paying someone to check on them, shouldn't they be fine? It's not like anyone's going to notice... oh wait, now everyone's talking about it and it's a big deal 🙄. Newsflash: if you don't want your dogs to be treated well, maybe don't have pets in the first place. And let's be real, most people wouldn't dare leave their dogs in crates for that long, so this guy must be some kind of animal expert or something 🐕👀.

idk how people can even think leaving dogs locked up for 23 hours straight is okay 🤯💔 it's like they're just dog zombies or something...anyway i'm glad the app she used has a decent rating system so maybe these ppl will get vetted next time lol anyway, 1hr visits are a no-brainer and i'm all for those sitters documenting everything & reporting concerns to authorities 📝🚨
