Donald Trump walks back comments about UK soldiers in Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump appears to have walked back comments earlier this week that sparked widespread criticism, stating that British soldiers who fought alongside Nato troops in Afghanistan were among the "greatest of all warriors". The remarks came after Trump claimed that some Nato allies "stayed a little off the frontlines" during their time in Afghanistan.

However, in a post on social media on Saturday, Trump seemed to soften his stance. He praised UK soldiers who lost 457 lives and many more were injured during their service in Afghanistan, calling it a "bond too strong to ever be broken". The US president also expressed support for the UK military, stating that they are "second to none" - with the exception of the USA.

The remarks appear to have been prompted by criticism from Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, who had previously raised concerns about Trump's comments. In a conversation on Saturday, No 10 said that Starmer discussed the bravery and sacrifice of British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan. The discussion also touched on the need for progress towards a sustainable ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump's previous remarks had sparked criticism from politicians across Europe, with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defending the memory of Italian soldiers killed and wounded during Nato operations in Afghanistan. Meloni stated that Trump's comments were "unacceptable", highlighting the significant cost that Italy paid during the nearly 20-year conflict, including the loss of 53 soldiers.

In a statement on social media, Meloni acknowledged the strong ties between Italy and the US but emphasized the importance of respect for allies. The remarks from Trump have raised questions about his relationship with other Nato leaders and whether he is willing to take criticism from Western partners.

πŸ˜’ this whole thing got me thinking... how can one person make a comment, get slammed, then turn around and try to fix it? seems like diplomacy 101 but I guess not when you're a global leader πŸ€”. Trump's words might've been thoughtless, but his actions now seem genuine, almost heartfelt ❀️. what does this say about the kind of relationship we need between leaders and nations? 🀝

I'm not sure what's going on with this guy... πŸ€” I mean, it seems like he just can't help himself, you know? He starts off saying some pretty hurtful stuff about our allies in Afghanistan, implying that they weren't doing enough to contribute to the fight, and then suddenly he's walking back those comments like nothing ever happened. It's like he's trying to save face or something.

And don't even get me started on the fact that he's still being super condescending towards other Nato leaders. I mean, come on, if you're going to make some comment about how great our soldiers are, at least have the decency to do it with a little more tact and respect for everyone else involved. It feels like he's more concerned with being liked by his own base than actually showing any kind of leadership or diplomacy.

I also think it's interesting that Keir Starmer and Giorgia Meloni were able to call him out on this stuff, though. I mean, they're not afraid to speak truth to power, even if it means going up against someone as powerful as Trump. That takes a lot of guts, and it's something that we should definitely be supporting more often.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that Trump's comments were just another example of his tendency to stir up controversy and then try to backpedal when he realizes he's made a mistake. It's not exactly the most inspiring behavior, but hey, at least it keeps things interesting, right? 😊

OMG 🀯 I'm low-key relieved that Trump walked back those comments!!! Like, dude, you don't wanna mess with the UK military fam πŸ’”πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ 457 lives lost? That's not something to joke about, bruh 😷 I'm glad Keir Starmer spoke up and reminded everyone of the bravery & sacrifice of our soldiers in Afghanistan πŸ™. And, tbh, Trump's comments were straight fire πŸ”₯... at Nato allies who didn't do enough, duh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Now he's giving some major respect to the UK military? πŸ‘‘ That's more like it! No need for drama or controversy, fam πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

I'm not sure what's going on with Trump anymore... 🀯 He says one thing, then changes it like that. I feel bad for the soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan, and I agree with Keir Starmer about Trump's comments being hurtful. I think we need to remember the sacrifices of all the soldiers, not just those from our own countries. It's a bit embarrassing when world leaders can't even get their words right πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, especially after all the conflicts they've been involved in.

idk wut i think...trump 2day seems 2 b tryna make amends w/ nato & uk soldiers in afghanistan lololol...he even said they r "second 2 none" which kinda makes me LOL cuz lets be real, dont get us started on how well the usa did in that war hahaha. anyhoo, i think its good 4 him 2 apologize nd show some respect 4 those who served & died but let's not get it twisted, ppl need 2 calm down n talk about this 1st before trump starts tweeting again πŸ˜‚πŸ’¬

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ so trump's comments were kinda weird to begin with, but I guess walking back a bit makes him look less like a total...whatever πŸ™„. all this backpedaling just feels like an exercise in damage control, you know? it's like he's trying to smooth over the rough edges of his ego instead of actually listening to the concerns of others πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. and btw, 457 lives lost is no joke - can't say I'd want to be friends with someone who underestimates that kinda sacrifice πŸ€•.

Trump's about-face πŸ€”, nice to see him finally acknowledging the sacrifices made by UK soldiers in Afghanistan. 457 lives lost, that's crazy πŸ’€. I was following this drama on Twitter yesterday, thought it was gonna be a mess. Starmer called Trump out for his comments and now he's walking back. Wonder if Italy's Meloni had anything to do with it πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Trump's still got some work to do on building those relationships with other Nato leaders. At least he acknowledged the bond between soldiers, that's a good start πŸ‘.

omg did u see trump's comments on british soldiers in afghanistan? like what r they even saying now lol apparently he was all "they're the greatest warriors" and then suddenly changed it 2 "the usa r the best" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ anyway, i dont get why trump thinks he can just say whatever and expect ppl 2 be fine w/ it πŸ™„ but hey at least he acknowledged the sacrifices of british soldiers and stuff, thats a start πŸ™

Trump's backpedal kinda makes sense, tbh πŸ€”. He's a polarizing figure, and you gotta wonder what goes on in that head of his sometimes πŸ˜‚. One minute he's trash-talking our allies, the next he's praising their sacrifice? It's like, bravo, Mr Trump, let's just move on from this one πŸ‘.

I'm not buying the whole "he was misquoted" thing either πŸ™„. Trump knows how to spin a statement to fit his narrative. But hey, at least he's talking about it now, right? πŸ’¬. Maybe he'll learn something from this and actually listen to criticism for once 🀞. Wouldn't that be nice? 😊
