Ex-Countdown champion detained in hospital after attacking rival player with knife

Former Countdown Champion Detained Over Knife Attack on Rival Player

A shocking incident at a Blackpool tournament has left fans and fellow competitors stunned after a former Countdown champion was detained in hospital for treatment following an attack on rival player Thomas Carey with a knife. John Cowen, 31, who won the coveted Countdown teapot several times, including achieving the distinction of becoming an octochamp after winning eight consecutive games, ran across a room to confront Carey before being restrained by attenders.

The attack occurred during a Focal Countdown Group event, where former champions and contestants faced fans in spelling and number challenges. According to CCTV footage, Cowen entered the Wainwright Club shortly after 11.30am with a kitchen knife in his hand, before spotting Carey and running towards him. After being stopped by bystanders, police arrested him and found a second kitchen knife in his pocket.

Carey was treated for a wound to his left biceps and remains in hospital as a result of the attack. Cowen, who has schizophrenia, had previously expressed discontent over the use of mobile apps to practice the game at fan conventions and contests. However, no clear motive for the attack was given during the trial.

Judge Mathieson described the incident as "terrifying" and stated that Cowen's attitude towards treatment remained hostile. He ruled that Cowen should remain in hospital for an indefinite duration under section 37/41 of the Mental Health Act, citing his mental disorder as a reason for detention.

Cowen pleaded not guilty to all charges, including two counts of possession of a bladed article in a public place and wounding with intent. The court heard that Carey was a member of the Countdown fan club since 2011 and had known Cowen from previous meetings and events.

The incident has left many in the Countdown community shaken, and fans are urging caution when interacting with fellow competitors at upcoming events.

OMG u guys wont blieve what just happend!!! 😱 John Cowen was like a legend on Countdown but he got so stressed out 'cos they started using apps 2 practice the game @ events n he attacked Thomas Carey with a knife 🀯 I mean I get it, he's got schizophrenia but u would think dey'd help him manage his stress better πŸ’”. Now hes in hospital & dey say hes not guilty of all charges πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ but its still super scary 4 everyone else who plays the game 🎲

I'm totally on John's side here πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Like, what's wrong with expressing discontent towards something? He was just passionate about the game, you know? And yeah, mobile apps can be super frustrating, I mean, who needs that kind of pressure at a fan convention? Anyway, it seems like he got taken to task for being... enthusiastic πŸ€”. I'm not saying his behavior was cool or anything, but come on, mental health issues don't equal no-good, right? And that hospital stint is gonna be super hard on him 😞. More support needed for people struggling with mental stuff, if you ask me 🀝

πŸ€” I'm not buying all this drama around John Cowen's attack on Thomas Carey... 31? He's already a former champion, you think he just snaps because some rival player is winning? πŸ™„ And what's with the schizophrenia thing? Maybe he just lost his cool, but blaming it on that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, I've seen more convincing arguments in a Celebrity Big Brother finale. πŸ’β€β™€οΈ This whole thing feels like a PR stunt to me... did anyone really think Cowen would get away with this if the police found two knives on him? 😏 The real question is: what's going on behind the scenes here?

πŸ€• this is like something outta a horror movie! i mean we got some kinda champion of this show doing crazy stuff to someone else because of a mobile app thing... schizophrenia or not, it's just super sad that he had to take things to this extreme level πŸ˜” and poor thomas carey, i hope he recovers fast from his injury 🀞 but the thing is, how did we even let it get this far? like, if someone's having a meltdown because of an app, shouldn't there be more staff at these events or support groups for people to talk about their issues? πŸ€” and what's with all these knives? are we just living in some kinda twisted world where people think it's okay to carry blades around? 🚫

πŸ€• this is such a scary story, i mean who would've thought that someone with so much success in a game like countdown could lose it all like this? 🀯 its not just about the attack itself but how we can prevent such incidents from happening in the future. mental health is something we should always consider when dealing with others and especially if they have conditions like schizophrenia, we need to be more understanding and supportive. πŸ’• we should also think of the victim here thomas carey, his well-being is what matters most right now. πŸ™

πŸ€• this is just so worrying it's like he knew exactly how to get attention and his schizophrenia history makes me wonder if he was trying to manipulate others into thinking he wasn't being serious... i mean what's the point of having a publicist for a mental health issue when you're already making headlines for violent outbursts? 🀯 anyway, i hope Carey recovers soon from that nasty wound πŸ’• and i'm just so sorry it has to happen in such a random setting like a fan convention πŸŽ‰

omg u can't even believe what happened!!! 😱 John Cowen, a former champion of Countdown, went crazy and attacked his rival Thomas Carey 🀯 with a knife! πŸ—‘οΈ I mean, I've heard of contestants getting heated during the show, but this is on a whole different level πŸ’€. And it's not like he was just having a bad day, nope, he had schizophrenia 🧠 and was already known to have mental health issues. But still, 2 knives?! 🀯 What was he thinking? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The fact that he pleaded not guilty but got detained for an indefinite duration under the Mental Health Act is just wild πŸŒͺ️. Anyway, this incident has left everyone in shock and I think we need to be super careful when interacting with fellow competitors at events from now on πŸ’”πŸ‘€

omg this is so messed up πŸ€• my friend's cousin knows Thomas Carey and he's super nice guy... i dont know how someone with schizophrenia could just snap like that 😩 it sounds like John Cowen was always a bit unstable, but that doesnt excuse his behavior at all πŸ’” im glad no one else was hurt but still this is so scary... what if he had been more calm or had more help? πŸ€”

omg i just saw this video of a dog playing piano πŸ•πŸ˜‚ and it's literally so cute i'm getting goosebumps think about how dogs have more talent than some humans 🀣 anyway back to countdown, who else loved watching john cowen crush it on the show? πŸ“Ί i mean, 8 consecutive wins is insane! 🀯 but seriously though, i feel bad for thomas carey... that's really scary stuff happening right in front of someone you know 😬

omg this is so weird... i dont get why he just ran at thomas carey with a knife 🀯 like didnt he think about what would happen? or that there were people around to stop him πŸ™„ cowen's schizophrenia is no excuse for his behavior, but at the same time, its hard to understand how someone with mental health issues can be so violent πŸ˜” and now hes in hospital again... hopefully he gets the help he needs πŸ’‘

this is so weird 🀯 i mean, john cowen was like a legend in the counting world and now he's basically a danger to people 🚨 what was going through his head? it sounds like he had some major issues with the fan conventions and apps but that's no excuse for attacking someone πŸ€•. the fact that he has schizophrenia and his attitude towards treatment is still hostile is really concerning 😬. i hope carey recovers well from his injury πŸ’ͺ, but at the same time, this incident is a harsh reminder of how serious mental health can be 🌎. fans need to be more careful around each other, especially in events where they're supposed to be relaxed and friendly πŸ‘₯.

🀯 I mean, can you imagine being in that situation? A former champion, winning all those times, having an epic rivalry with someone... and then just losing it completely πŸ€”. It's like his mental health was playing catch-up with the game he loved πŸ˜•. He's got schizophrenia, which is a serious condition, but I get why fans would be worried about their safety when they're competing in these high-pressure events.

The fact that he had knives on him and wasn't taking his meds πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... it's just so not okay πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. The court made the right call by keeping him in hospital for now, but I hope this incident leads to some kind of support system being put in place for former champions who are struggling with their mental health πŸ’‘.

It's a shame that John Cowen has gone through all this πŸ€•. He was clearly passionate about Countdown and had an amazing skill set, but maybe he just needed more help than just competing in events πŸ˜”.

omg what's going on with these famous ppl ?? 🀯 i mean john cowen is literally a legend in the countdown world but this is just crazy 😱 his schizophrenia diagnosis could have been handled so much better lol he was all worked up about mobile apps and now look what happens ... the system failed him somehow πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

i feel bad for thomas carey too, getting attacked by some psycho fan πŸ€• that's way more terrifying than any game or competition ever could be 😨 fans are right to be cautious at these events now but like how can we even prevent this kinda thing from happening in the first place ?? πŸ’”

I don’t usually comment but... can u believe this? A former Countdown champ just got detained for attackin someone else with a knife 🀯 like, what's goin on here? Cowen was already strugglin with schizophrenia and now he goes and does somethin crazy like this πŸš”. I feel so bad for Thomas Carey, the other guy who got hurt πŸ˜•. It's just not right that Cowen was tryin to confront him in the first place... and then he just loses control? 😲 Not sure what's gonna happen next but hopefully he gets the help he needs πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€• this is so shocking I feel bad for Thomas Carey he's going to be ok tho but what was John thinking? πŸ˜” he had a mental breakdown or something and now he's got the whole nation talking πŸ“° about how to deal with mental health issues in competitive spaces like that. it's scary because you see these high profile people who have millions of fans and they can just lose it like that πŸ’₯ but on the other hand, it raises awareness about the importance of support systems for contestants especially those with mental health conditions πŸ‘

omg i cant even believe what happened to Thomas Carey πŸ€•πŸš‘ he's like a legend in the countdown world and now hes all messed up because of John Cowen πŸ˜” i mean im no expert but its pretty obvious that Johns mental health issues were a major factor here, and the fact that he got detention for it is kinda harsh idk man... like we should be supporting him instead of locking him up 🀝 and yeah the fan convention thingy was probably just one last straw, cowen had been saying some pretty out there stuff about how its ruining the game πŸ“ŠπŸ‘Ž

omg this is so sad πŸ€• i feel bad for thomas carey and his family, but like... john cowen wasnt exactly perfect either, ya know? he had that whole issue with the apps thing and it sounds like he was really upset about it... dont get me wrong, an attack with a knife is super messed up 😳, but can we not just try to understand where he's coming from too? schizophrenia is no joke 🀯, and its effects are so much more than just having a bad attitude or something... anyway, glad cowen's getting help now πŸ’•, hope carey recovers soon πŸ™

Man, this is like something straight outta a movie 🀯. I mean, John Cowen was like a legend on Countdown, and to think he snapped and went all crazy on Thomas Carey... it's just wild. You gotta feel bad for Carey, too - I heard the guy's gonna be okay, but still, who wants to go through that? πŸ€•

And you know what's even crazier? Cowen had expressed some pretty valid concerns about how apps were changing the game, but I guess you can't just take those frustrations out on someone else. It's like, dude needs help or something... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Schizophrenia is no joke, and it's not an excuse for violence.

The thing is, though - we can't be too hard on ourselves when things go wrong like this. We gotta remember that people with mental health issues are still human beings, and they deserve compassion and understanding. It's not all doom and gloom out there! 🌞

πŸ€• I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing. You gotta wonder what went on in John Cowen's mind that made him snap like that. I mean, he was a winner, had the Countdown teapot and all, but did that make him invincible? Apparently not. Schizophrenia can play some crazy tricks on you, but that's no excuse for taking out your frustrations on someone else... 😞

I feel for Thomas Carey, poor guy's been left with a nasty wound. He was just trying to enjoy a tournament and have some fun like everyone else. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ This whole incident has got me thinking about the pressures we put on ourselves and each other, especially in competitive environments. Maybe Cowen needed help instead of confrontation? I don't know, but what I do know is that this kind of thing can happen to anyone, anytime... πŸ’”
