Eye on Africa - Nigerian General Christopher Musa returns to government as defence minister

Nigerian General Christopher Musa has been appointed as the country's new Minister of Defence. This comes just a month after he lost his job as chief of defence staff amidst concerns over a military coup.

Musa's appointment has raised some eyebrows given the controversy surrounding his previous role. However, his return to government appears to be a significant move towards stability in the country's defense sector.

The World Health Organization recently added GLP-1 medication, such as Ozempic, to its list of essential medications for treating obesity. According to WHO, globally obesity numbers are on the rise and Africa is no exception.

In other news, a South African radio presenter has been accused of recruiting young men from his show to join the Russian army.

This week's edition of 'Eye On Africa' brings you all these stories and more, including a discussion with our guests about various issues affecting the continent.

omg i just had the craziest thought while reading this news... have you ever tried those weight loss supplements that are like Ozempic? 🤔 my cousin's friend's sister took it and she said her blood sugar levels went down like 50 points or something crazy like that! but at the same time, isn't it weird how pharmaceutical companies just add new meds to the list without actually testing them on a larger scale? i mean, what's the rush, right? 🙃 anyway, back to this Musa guy... i heard he's been in the military for like 20 years or so. that's some serious commitment 😅

Just read that GLP-1 medication is now on WHO's list 🙌, and I'm feeling hopeful about the future! Obesity rates are on the rise in Africa too, but at least we're getting closer to finding solutions 💊. It's crazy to think that a show in SA can recruit people into fighting wars without even thinking about it 😱. Anyway, I hope Nigeria gets some stability with Gen Musa leading the defense 🤞, we need more positive vibes on our continent!

I don't know how old some people are getting in Nigeria... just last month this guy is sacking his own job as COAS and now he's back as Defence Minister? It's like they're playing a game of musical chairs, but with millionaires' lives 🤔. And what about the concerns over that military coup? You'd think those would be a bigger deal. But hey, I guess stability is key in Nigeria... or at least that's what they keep telling us 😂.

I don't get why Nigeria is being super cautious about its defence minister position 🤔... Musa was let go just last month but now he's back in charge? That's like, a major U-turn 💥. And I'm not saying it's all bad, but what happened to the dude who got fired from his job as chief of defense staff? Wasn't there some controversy around that too? 🤷‍♂️

And btw, have you seen the stats on obesity rates globally? 😱 It's crazy! And Africa is no exception. The WHO adding GLP-1 meds to its list of essential meds for treating obesity is a good move, but we need to tackle this from all angles – diet, exercise, education... 🏋️‍♀️

I'm also following that story about the South African radio presenter who recruited young men to join the Russian army 📰. That's just not cool. We should be supporting our own soldiers, not exporting them to other countries' wars 😕.

I'm not buying that GLP-1 medication is the solution to Africa's obesity problems 🤔... I mean, what about addressing the root causes? Are we just treating the symptoms here? And another thing, Ozempic for obesity treatment - isn't that a bit of a conflict of interest considering the pharmaceutical companies are making a killing off this stuff 💸. Also, why not invest in community programs or public health initiatives instead of relying on meds? 🤷‍♂️

And what's with this Russian army recruitment business? 🚫 Can we really trust South African radio presenters to know what's best for young people's careers and safety? I mean, I'm all for entrepreneurship and free speech, but not when it comes at the expense of someone's life or freedom... that's just crazy talk 😱.
