Fable to Offer "Free" Heartless Landlord Experience This Fall
Microsoft has finally offered an extended preview of its highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Fable RPG franchise, with nearly 11 minutes of gameplay footage and commentary shared during a recent Developer Direct showcase. The new game promises a fully open world for players to explore, featuring locations from previous Fable games like Bowerstone, including Albion, which will undergo an industrial revolution.
According to Playground Games, the development studio behind the series, the player character is the first hero born in Albion in a generation, and their story begins when they're a child after their home of Briar Hill is invaded by a mysterious stranger who turns its inhabitants into stone. Before embarking on their adventure, players can customize their hero's appearance, including skin tone, head shape, tattoos, and scars.
While the gameplay footage doesn't show anything revolutionary, combat seems standard with melee and ranged options alongside magic, as well as a posture meter to break through enemies' defenses for stylish finishers. However, the kinetic feel of the combat is missing, unlike games like FromSoftware titles.
The game also retains its lighthearted elements from previous Fable titles, including the ability to ask villagers out on dates and get married, with an added twist: players can engage in non-monogamous relationships. Moreover, purchasing every house and business in Albion will not only improve the economy but also impact NPCs' opinions of the player character.
From a technical standpoint, the preview footage showed some rough edges, including a frame rate that's not smooth and ghosting in animations. However, with an autumn release window approaching, it remains to be seen if Playground Games can polish the presentation before its launch on Xbox Series X/S, PC via Xbox and Steam, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass Ultimate.
Microsoft first announced the new Fable game back in 2020, with an original release date of 2025 that was later delayed to this year's February.
