Farmington Hills woman sues apartment owners after fire leaves her homeless, alleges years-long pattern of neglect - Detroit Metro Times

Farmington Hills Woman Sues Apartment Owners Over Fire That Left Her Homeless and Alleges Years of Neglect

A woman whose family was forced to flee their apartment after a devastating fire last year is suing the building's owners and management company, alleging years of negligence and safety failures. Theresa Stott, who lives with her two daughters, claims that the fire, which broke out on April 19, was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of neglect and retaliation by the apartment complex.

According to Stott, she had just put away groceries and shut off the bathroom light when she started hearing what sounded like running water. When she went back into the bathroom, smoke was pouring out of the ceiling vent. She claims that her video footage shows that smoke alarms were not sounding at all during the fire, despite being in good working condition.

Stott disputes the official account that firefighters heard the smoke alarms while they were battling the blaze. Instead, she says that the building's management failed to enforce a personal protection order she had obtained against a neighbor who had threatened her and her daughters. She also claims that the owners denied her requests to transfer her family to a different unit.

The fire damaged eight units and led to a partial floor collapse, leaving Stott and her daughters without a home. The lawsuit alleges negligence, breach of lease, housing code violations, retaliation, constructive eviction, conversion of personal property, emotional distress, and violations of state and federal fair housing laws.

Records obtained by the Metro Times show that the city had numerous issues with the building since at least 2016, including structural problems, expired permits, and poor property management. Stott claims that she reported these concerns to the authorities but was ignored.

The case has sparked controversy, with Fire Marshal Jason Baloga saying that the fire was a great opportunity to remind people to test their smoke alarms monthly and make sure they are working properly. However, Stott insists that the facts will come out and that she is not being bullied in court.

Stott launched a GoFundMe campaign to help her and her daughters, who have been struggling to secure stable housing since the fire. The lawsuit seeks damages for lost housing, destroyed property, emotional harm, and financial losses tied to displacement and unemployment.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, Stott's family is left to pick up the pieces, trying to rebuild their lives in a new home.

๐Ÿค• This is so unfair, the fact that they got burned out and now they're being sued ๐Ÿ˜ฑ its like they're being punished for something thats not even their fault ๐Ÿ™„

Ugh its just not right ๐Ÿค• that these ppl are gettin away with all this neglect & safety failures. I mean, 8 units get damaged & theres a partial floor collapse? thats like somethin outta a movie ๐ŸŽฅ. And now Theresa's family is strugglin to find stable housing? that's just cruel ๐Ÿ˜”. The fact that the building management ignored her concerns & didnt enforce the personal protection order she had is just wrong. Smoke alarms not soundin during the fire? that's a major red flag ๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ’ก. I hope Theressa gets the justice she deserves & gets back on her feet soon ๐Ÿ’ช.

You know what's wild? I was at the park with my dog yesterday and we saw this little squirrel who was just chillin', like it owned the place. I swear, it was like it had its own tiny little agenda or something. Anyway, I started thinking about how some people think squirrels are pests but they're actually pretty awesome creatures. Like, have you ever seen a squirrel outsmart someone trying to shoo it away? It's like they're saying, "Uh, no thanks, human, I've got this." ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

The fact that this is happening again and again in our communities is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. I've been following this case closely and it's clear that the owners and management company have been doing some major covering up. The video footage of the smoke alarms not sounding during the fire is straight-up insane ๐Ÿ˜ฒ, and the fact that the city had all these issues with the building going back to 2016 just shows how long they've been neglecting their responsibilities.

I'm not surprised Theresa Stott is suing them, though - someone's gotta hold them accountable for this. And yeah, the GoFundMe campaign has been great, but it's clear that she and her daughters need more support than just donations ๐Ÿ’ธ. They deserve a safe place to call home, no questions asked.

It's also wild how some people are trying to spin this as a reminder to test our smoke alarms, like that's what the owners should be doing instead of making sure their building is structurally sound ๐Ÿ˜’. It's not about being safe, it's about being responsible and taking care of your tenants. This case needs to get some serious attention and action taken, ASAP ๐Ÿ•’๏ธ

"Experience keeps a dear spot in the heart for friends who proved good, and hateful ones never found there." ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’” The way Theresa Stott is fighting for justice and her family's rights is truly inspiring. It's heartbreaking that she had to go through this ordeal and is now facing a long and difficult road ahead. But as her story shows, even in the face of adversity, one can find the strength to keep going ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ.

๐Ÿค” I'm so done with these apartment complex owners! Like, they can't even keep track of basic maintenance and safety stuff? Years of neglect and now this poor lady is left homeless with her kids... it's just crazy. And don't even get me started on the smoke alarms not sounding during the fire. That's just a huge red flag. I'm all for holding these people accountable and making sure they pay for their negligence. It's like, basic responsibility right? The fact that they're trying to spin this as "just a reminder to test your smoke alarms" is just ridiculous. There's more going on here than that...

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ˜ฑ I'm so worried about Theresa Stott and her daughters ๐Ÿค•. The fact that they were left homeless after the devastating fire is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ญ. And to think that she's been reporting issues with the building since 2016, but was ignored ๐Ÿ™„. It's clear that the owners/management company didn't care about the residents' safety and well-being ๐Ÿ‘Ž.

I'm not surprised that the official account doesn't add up ๐Ÿค”. If smoke alarms weren't sounding during the fire, despite being in good working condition, it's a huge red flag ๐Ÿ”ด. And the fact that they denied her requests to transfer her family to a different unit is just cruel ๐Ÿ’ธ.

The lawsuit is definitely justified in my opinion ๐Ÿ™Œ. Stott and her daughters deserve justice for the harm they've suffered ๐Ÿ˜ค. I hope the investigation into the cause of the fire reveals some truth, but it's clear that the owners/management company are trying to spin this story ๐Ÿ”„. We need to hold them accountable for their negligence ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I'm so sad 2 c what happened 2 Theresa & her daughters ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ  They deserve justice & compensation 4 the trauma & stress they've been through ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ’” The fact that the building had multiple issues since 2016 & management ignored these concerns is just appalling ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ‘Ž It's clear that Stott wasn't being bullied, she was fighting 4 her rights & safety ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ’ช I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this lawsuit will bring some much-needed accountability 2 the apartment owners & management ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ†

I gotta disagree with Fire Marshal Baloga ๐Ÿค”. He's just shoving smoke alarms down our throats (pun intended) without acknowledging the building's history of neglect and poor management. I mean, if the city had known about all these structural problems since 2016, why did they allow it to go on for so long? It's not like the fire was an isolated incident โ€“ it's a symptom of a larger problem. Stott's video footage is legit, btw. Smoke alarms weren't sounding off in her unit during the fire, and that's a red flag ๐Ÿ””. The owners and management company should be held accountable for their actions (or lack thereof). Maybe instead of reminding us to test our smoke alarms monthly, we should be asking why they didn't take action sooner? ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ”ฅ "The truth will set you free, but not before it hurts." ๐Ÿ’” We've got a situation where someone's life has been turned upside down by alleged negligence and safety failures. I don't think anyone wants to see someone go through that kind of trauma. It's like the saying goes: "You can't get blood from a stone," but sometimes people do try to take advantage of others when they're vulnerable. Stott's story is a harsh reminder that we need to look out for each other and make sure our voices are heard when it comes to these kinds of issues. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

I'm so sad to hear about Theresa Stott and her daughters ๐Ÿค•. This whole situation is just heartbreaking. The fact that they had to flee their apartment due to years of neglect and safety failures is just unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ก. I mean, who can't test smoke alarms monthly?! It's not rocket science! And to think that the building owners and management company knew about these issues for years but did nothing about it... ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ it's just infuriating.

I'm also really worried about Theresa and her daughters' well-being. They've been struggling to find stable housing since the fire, which is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜”. I hope they get the justice they deserve and that this lawsuit brings some closure to their situation ๐Ÿ’ช. And I think it's so sad that people are trying to downplay the severity of the situation by saying that they should have tested their smoke alarms more regularly ๐Ÿ™„. Like, no, it's not just about testing smoke alarms - it's about basic human rights and safety standards! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿค” this is so messed up... i mean can you imagine hearing running water in your bathroom and then smoke pouring out? it's like they're setting people up for fire. or worse. i'm not surprised she's suing them, it sounds like they were ignoring all these red flags just to save a buck. what's even more crazy is the city had issues with this building since 2016... that's years of neglect and no one did anything about it. poor theresa stott and her girls, i hope they get some justice out of this ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation... it's just crazy that this woman, Theresa, had to deal with all these issues on top of having a fire break out in her apartment ๐Ÿš’. And what really gets me is that the management company and owners were supposed to be taking care of these problems, but they clearly weren't doing their job properly ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. It's like, how many times does someone have to report issues before something actually gets done about it?! ๐Ÿ’” This whole situation has me feeling all kinds of frustrated, not just for Theresa and her daughters, but for anyone who's ever had to deal with subpar living conditions or neglect in their own homes ๐Ÿ .

Ugh ๐Ÿค• this just breaks my heart... I mean, I'm glad someone's holding the apartment owners accountable for what happened to Theresa and her daughters ๐Ÿ˜”, but it's so frustrating that they've been neglecting those issues for years. Like, can you imagine if people treated their homes with even a little bit of care? It's not just about the building itself, it's about the safety and well-being of everyone living there ๐Ÿ’•.

And to think that Theresa had already obtained a personal protection order against her neighbor... talk about being ignored by the system ๐Ÿ˜ค. I just hope justice is served and she gets the compensation she deserves ๐Ÿค‘. It's not right that people are having to go through this kind of trauma and struggle just because someone in power didn't care enough to do their job properly ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm sending all my positive vibes to Theresa and her girls, and I hope they're able to rebuild their lives soon โค๏ธ.

Ugh ๐Ÿค•, this is just so unfair ๐Ÿ˜ก. I mean, can you imagine having to go through all that stress and trauma after a fire destroys your home? It's already bad enough without feeling like the system is against you ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. The fact that the building had all these issues since 2016 and no one did anything about it is just disgusting ๐Ÿšฎ.

And what really gets me is when Fire Marshal Baloga tries to blame the victim for not testing her smoke alarms regularly ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, come on, that's not fair at all! It sounds like the building owners were more interested in saving money than keeping their tenants safe ๐Ÿ’ธ.

It's clear that Stott is being bullied by the court system ๐Ÿšซ, but I'm rooting for her to win this lawsuit and get the justice she deserves ๐Ÿ’ช. This could be a major case that exposes all the issues with the apartment complex and gets real change happening ๐Ÿ”“. We need more people like Stott speaking out against negligence and corruption ๐Ÿ‘Š.

.. this whole thing is just so heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. I mean, you can't blame someone for fighting back when they're being bullied and neglected by their own building management. It's like, how many times do you have to report problems before someone actually listens? And then to be left without a home... it's just devastating. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

And what really gets me is the response from the fire marshal, who basically tells people to just test their smoke alarms monthly or else ๐Ÿ™„. I get that safety is important, but this isn't just about some random household not taking care of their alarm system. This is about a lack of maintenance and oversight that led to a catastrophic event.

It's also interesting how the article mentions that Theresa Stott had obtained a personal protection order against her neighbor who had threatened her and her daughters. But what does that say about our society when we need protection orders just to feel safe in our own homes? ๐Ÿค

Anyway, I think this whole case highlights the importance of holding those in power accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to issues like housing and safety. We need more voices like Theresa Stott who are willing to speak out against neglect and abuse, even if it's hard. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• This is crazy how one person can be left without a home because the building owners and management are more worried about saving themselves from a lawsuit than making sure people live safely ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean, years of neglect and safety failures? That's just not right. It's like they were waiting for someone to get hurt before taking action ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ. The fact that they denied her requests to transfer her family to a different unit and didn't even enforce the personal protection order against her neighbor is just shocking ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I'm rooting for Theresa Stott in this lawsuit, hoping she gets justice and can rebuild her life without all this stress ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm really concerned about this situation ๐Ÿค•. It sounds like the apartment owners and management company have been ignoring the woman's concerns for years, and that's just not okay ๐Ÿ‘Ž. I mean, who gets to live in a place with known structural problems and expired permits? ๐Ÿค” That's a recipe for disaster.

And what really gets me is that she was trying to get protection from her neighbor, but the management company denied her requests and didn't enforce the personal protection order ๐Ÿšซ. It's like they were more interested in keeping the peace than keeping people safe.

I hope Theresa Stott's lawsuit can bring some accountability to this situation ๐Ÿคž. She deserves justice for what she's been through, and I hope the court can hold the apartment owners responsible for their negligence ๐Ÿ˜ .

I'm so sorry to hear that Theresa Stott and her daughters are going through this ๐Ÿ˜”. It sounds like they've been dealt a really tough hand, especially with all these issues with the apartment complex dating back years. I can only imagine how scary it must be to feel like you're not being heard or taken care of. ๐Ÿค• The fact that she's fighting for justice and trying to hold those responsible accountable is super admirable ๐Ÿ’ช. It's heartbreaking that they've had to go through this fire (literally and figuratively) and are now struggling to find stable housing again ๐Ÿ . I'm sending all my positive vibes their way, hoping that justice will be served and they'll get the support they need โค๏ธ.
