FBI Arrests Former HPD Captain Daryn Edwards on Federal Child Sex Crime Charges Again
A former captain of the Houston Police Department (HPD) is facing federal charges for his alleged involvement in child sex crimes, marking a second arrest for the 59-year-old veteran officer. Daryn Edwards was taken into custody by FBI agents on Friday morning at the Galveston County Courthouse, just hours before he was set to appear in court on state charges.
Edwards' first arrest occurred in February, when League City police charged him with child sex and pornography offenses. Investigators at the time stated that they had spoken with the victim and accounted for all the evidence.
However, federal authorities have now added five new charges against Edwards, including exploitation of children, coercion, enticement, and possession of child pornography. The updated charges were unsealed on Friday as part of a federal indictment returned on November 18.
Edwards' current charges carry significant penalties, highlighting the severity of his alleged crimes. His second arrest in just over eight months raises concerns about the HPD's handling of internal investigations and its ability to prevent similar cases from occurring.
The case against Edwards is ongoing, with his next court appearance scheduled for later on Friday afternoon.
