Gallus in Weegieland review – hilarious show sends Alice down a class rabbit hole

Panto perfection: Gallus in Weegieland brings Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to life with hilarious results.

Gallus in Weegieland, the latest panto production from director Sally Reid and writer Johnny McKnight, is an unapologetically joyful romp that updates Lewis Carroll's classic tale of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for a modern audience. The show follows Alice Pleasance Liddell as she travels from Glasgow's affluent West End to working-class Dennistoun, where she falls in love with a charming boy-rabbit.

In this fresh adaptation, Alice is on a quest to discover bravery, imagination, and love – and to win a coveted dance certificate. Her journey takes her headlong into a battle of good vs evil with the formidable Queenie of Hearts, played by ebullient Louise McCarthy. The actress brings a wicked energy to the role, effortlessly conveying the Queen's unpredictability.

Newcomer Jorgey Scott-Learmonth shines as Alice, imbuing the character with a radiant positivity that belies her initial naivety. Her chemistry with co-star Star Penders' immature boy-rabbit is undeniable, and their eventual kiss is a sweetly anticipated moment.

McKnight has cleverly woven in various pop culture references – from Ozempic medication to Celebrity Traitors – into the script, adding a lighthearted touch that never feels forced. The result is a show that is both silly and endearing, perfect for families or anyone looking for an entertaining night out.

Sally Reid's company brings the production to life with impeccable timing and comedic flair. Catriona Faint delivers a superbly deadpan performance as Hatter, while Marc Mackinnon's lugubrious Honey the Caterpillar provides some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. The set design by Kenny Miller is equally impressive, with its striking black-and-white stripes and checks adding to the show's sense of disorientation.

Ultimately, Gallus in Weegieland is a triumph – a hilarious panto that updates Carroll's classic tale for the 21st century while retaining all the whimsy and charm that makes Wonderland so beloved.

This whole Alice in Wonderland thing is just like my aunt's kitchen on Christmas Day 🎄🍰 - complete with over-the-top performances, cringe-worthy moments, and a healthy dose of sugar to balance it out. I mean, who needs subtlety when you've got Louise McCarthy's Queenie of Hearts? 😂 Her energy is infectious, even if she does have 12 personalities or something. As for Jorgey Scott-Learmonth as Alice, she's like the human embodiment of a Hallmark card - all warmth and light, but also somehow still manages to be adorable when she trips over her own feet 🤣. The pop culture references had me chuckling, too - I mean, Celebrity Traitors on stage? That's like something out of my own fever dreams 💀. Overall, Gallus in Weegieland is a riotous good time that'll leave you grinning from ear to ear 👍.

🤩 I love how this modern panto brings Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to life with such humor & heart! 🌹 The cast is amazing, especially Jorgey Scott-Learmonth as Alice - she totally nails the character's innocence & determination 😊. And can we talk about Louise McCarthy's Queenie of Hearts? She's absolutely wicked! 👑 I also love how they snuck in all those pop culture references - it adds so much to the show's lighthearted vibe 📺. The set design is insane too, it totally captures the crazy world of Wonderland 🎨. All in all, this panto has everything: comedy, music, and a story that's both silly & sweet ❤️.

🤣 I gotta say, this panto sounds like a real hoot 🎪! I love how they're updating Alice in Wonderland for the modern era – the addition of pop culture references is genius 🔥. But what really gets me is how Sally Reid and Johnny McKnight have managed to balance silliness with heart ❤️. The cast seems to be having a blast, and it's infectious 🤣. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a show about a girl in a tutu fighting the Queen of Hearts 😂? It's like they've bottled up the magic of childhood (minus the sugar high 😴). One thing that would make it even better is if they threw in some retro fun – you know, old-school video games, vinyl records, or something 🎮📀. Still, I'm excited to check it out and see what all the fuss is about 🤔!

OMG this panto sounds AMAZING 🤩 I'm defo going to check it out with my fave fam! Jorgey Scott-Learmonth as Alice is literally perfect, her positivity is infectious 💖 and I love how the writers incorporated pop culture references - Celebrity Traitors tho?! 😂 Sally Reid's direction and the cast, especially Catriona Faint as Hatter, are pure comedy gold 🤣 and that set design? WOW! 10/10 would watch again 🎉

omg i just love pantos lol they're like the best thing ever! 🤣 i mean, who doesn't want to watch a grown man dressed as a girl dancing with penguins? 🐧😂 and the set design sounds crazy cool, those black and white stripes are so trippy! 😴 what's with all the pop culture references tho? like, why would someone take Ozempic medication to see a pantomime? 🤔 i guess it's just part of making it fun for everyone... does anyone actually use that stuff? 💊

I just saw this new pantomime production 'Gallus in Weegieland' and I gotta say, it was bloody brilliant! 😂 The way they've updated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for a modern audience is pure genius. I mean, who wouldn't want to see a working-class girl from Dennistoun fall in love with a boy-rabbit? 🤣 It's like they're saying that even the most unlikely people can find love and bravery.

The cast is also phenomenal, especially Louise McCarthy as Queenie of Hearts - she's absolutely wicked! 😈 And Jorgey Scott-Learmonth as Alice is so radiant, it's like you can't help but root for her. The chemistry between her and Star Penders' boy-rabbit is undeniable, and that kiss at the end was just perfect.

I also loved how they've woven in pop culture references into the script - it adds this lighthearted touch that never feels forced. And let's not forget about Sally Reid's company bringing the whole production to life with impeccable timing and comedic flair.

The set design is also mind-blowing, especially the use of black-and-white stripes and checks. It's like you're right there in Wonderland, disoriented and laughing your head off.

All in all, 'Gallus in Weegieland' is a triumph - a hilarious panto that updates Carroll's classic tale for the 21st century while retaining all the whimsy and charm that makes Wonderland so beloved. It's a must-see for anyone looking for an entertaining night out! 🎟️
