Gareth Southgate 'worried about unity' amid St George's flag debate

Gareth Southgate has expressed concerns about the unity of England amid a debate over flying the St George's flag. The former England manager, who is now a bestselling author, believes that the display of the flag can create divisions rather than unite people.

Southgate was asked for his opinion on the flags debate during an interview with BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay. When asked what he thought about the use of St George's flags in certain circumstances, Southgate replied: "I worry about unity. I've seen what we did with the team [England] to unify every community."

He emphasized that there is more that unites people than separates them and encouraged everyone to focus on their commonalities rather than their differences.

The display of St George's flags has been a topic of controversy in recent months, with some people viewing it as a symbol of patriotism, while others see it as intimidating or divisive.

Former England defender Gary Neville recently criticized the "negative" display of the flag and ordered the removal of a flag from a building site he invested in.

Southgate's comments on unity and patriotism come after his eight-year tenure as England head coach ended with a Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain. Despite failing to win silverware, Southgate is widely recognized for uniting the country in support of the national team and has written a book called "Dear England: Lessons in Leadership".

I think Gareth's comments about the flag are really spot on ๐Ÿค”. As someone who's been around the football world, he knows how much of an impact the team can have on people's lives. When you're supporting your country's football team, it's not just about winning or losing - it's about coming together with others and feeling a sense of pride. But when it comes down to it, if flying the flag is causing divisions rather than unity, maybe we should take a step back and think about what really matters ๐Ÿ’ก. It's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment, but at the end of the day, it's all about putting people before flags ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง.

I think Gareth Southgate is really right about the St George's flag thing... ๐Ÿค” I mean, we should all be able to get on with each other without worrying about what flags people are flying. It's just common sense, innit? ๐Ÿ™„ I know some people might think it's a big deal, but at the end of the day, it's just a flag! ๐Ÿ’ช

I feel like Gareth's comments are super valid ๐Ÿค”. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's awesome to be proud of our nation and all that, but let's not forget we're human beings with different backgrounds and experiences. The flag debate is just a small part of the bigger issue - how do we bring people together instead of driving them apart? ๐ŸŒŽ I think Gareth hit the nail on the head when he said there's more that unites us than separates us. We need to focus on our shared values like equality, justice, and compassion ๐Ÿค. It's time for us to shift the conversation from flags and nationalism to building a society where everyone feels seen and valued ๐Ÿ’–.

I don't get why people can't just agree on this stuff ๐Ÿ˜Š. I mean, Gareth's right - there's more that unites us than divides us. We're all human beings, we've all got families and friends... it doesn't matter where we come from or what flag we fly (although, gotta say, the England flag is pretty cool ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง). Gary Neville's just being a bit too harsh with his criticism. I think Gareth's right that we should focus on what makes us similar, not different. And yeah, Southgate did do a great job bringing the country together while he was England manager... now let's just enjoy the flag and not worry about it, okay? ๐Ÿ˜Š

the whole thing about the flag debate just seems like a minor annoyance ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ but i can see what Gareth's saying...we should focus on our shared humanity rather than getting caught up in petty differences, right? ๐ŸŒŽ it's easy to get lost in the noise of disagreement but at the end of the day, we're all just human beings trying to do our best ๐Ÿค

I'm not sure I agree with Gareth Southgate's take on this whole St George's flag thing ๐Ÿค”. As someone who loves sports, I think it's great that people are passionate about their country and want to show some pride. The problem might be with how some people display the flag, rather than the flag itself. Like, yeah, some flag-waving can come across as a bit over-the-top or aggressive, but that doesn't mean we should just fold up our flags and hide them away ๐Ÿ˜.

I also think Southgate's whole "unity is more important than differences" vibe is spot on ๐Ÿ™Œ. We're all human beings living in the same world, after all! But maybe instead of getting rid of the flag altogether, we could find ways to use it in a way that brings people together? Like, imagine if everyone just waved their flags with a smile and a chat... I think that would be a win-win ๐ŸŽ‰.

omg did u see gareth southgate's interview on bbc breakfast? ๐Ÿคฏ he was SO calm about it but his words are like, totally on point! i mean, i get why ppl are passionate about the flag and all, but southgate makes a valid point that we should focus on what unites us rthan what divides us. ๐Ÿค as someone who's been following england's football team for years, it's crazy to think that one debate can create divisions like this. anyway, i'm loving southgate's new book "dear england" and his message of unity is exactly what we need more of right now ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’–

I dont think people should be so quick to judge each other over something like that ๐Ÿค”. I mean Gareth's right, there's more important things we can focus on than just flags, ya know? Like how many sick memes are on Twitter rn ๐Ÿคฃ. Seriously though, unity is key, and if flying the St George's flag makes you uncomfortable, then maybe don't do it ๐Ÿ˜. But at the same time, I get why some people might see it as a symbol of pride or patriotism - like, I'd be proud to rep England too ๐Ÿ‘Š. It just comes down to being respectful and understanding, right? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I THINK SOUTHGATE MAKES A PRETTY FAIR POINT ABOUT THE ST GEORGE'S FLAG DEBATE ๐Ÿค”. IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY TO AGREE ON THINGS, AND WE SHOULD TRY TO FOCUS ON WHAT UNITS US INSTEAD OF DRIVING US APART ๐ŸŒŽ. AS SOMEONE WHO'S SEEN HOW SPORT CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER, I THINK HE'S RIGHT THAT THERE'S MORE TO US THAN JUST OUR DIFFERENCES ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿค” i mean think about it guys, Gareth's right we gotta focus on what unites us not what divides us. flying that st george flag is just one thing but its not even about that its about how we react to it. let's try to be more chill and less divided, you feel? ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐Ÿค” just saw this Gareth Southgate thingy on BBC breakfast... honestly thought it was kinda cool he spoke up about unity over flags ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ can't say i agree with him tho, seems like a bit of an odd stance to take on a national pride flag ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ what's next, gotta cancel all the England teams & stuff? ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ˜‚ anyway guess you gotta respect someone elses opinion even if u dont agree ๐Ÿ‘

I'm all about unity over division ๐Ÿค, you know? I think Gareth's right, we're so caught up in what makes us different that we forget what really matters โ€“ our shared humanity โค๏ธ. I've seen some crazy stuff online when it comes to the St George's flag debate, and honestly, it just feels like people are more focused on stirring up drama than actually talking about what unites us ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. Southgate's got a point that there's so much more to us than our nationality or cultural background โ€“ we're all just humans trying to figure things out together ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I dont think its that deep, mate ๐Ÿ˜.. I mean, yeah we all love our flags and whatnot, but to me its just a piece of cloth... if we focus on whats really important - like coming together as a nation after a big tournament loss ๐Ÿค... then thats when the unity stuff starts to make sense ๐Ÿ’ก. Gareth's got a point tho, lets not forget that theres more to us than just England vs everyone else โšฝ๏ธ.

I was watching this video of a guy flying a drone over the lake near my hometown yesterday ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ›ธ. He was doing some sick tricks with his quadcopter and I was like, "Whoa, that's insane!" ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Then I started thinking about how Gareth Southgate is right on point about unity, you know? Like, when we're focusing on the small stuff that divides us, we're missing out on all the cool things that bring us together ๐Ÿค—. And I was just eating this amazing pasta dish for lunch and it got me thinking about how much better food can be when people from different backgrounds come together to cook it ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ซ. Anyway, Gareth Southgate's book sounds like a must-read, btw ๐Ÿ‘€

I'm loving how Gareth Southgate is bringing some much-needed calm to this flag debate ๐Ÿ™. As someone who's all about unity, I think he's spot on โ€“ let's focus on what we have in common rather than what sets us apart ๐Ÿ‘ซ. The England team has always been a symbol of national pride, but for me, it's not just about the flag; it's about the values of hard work, dedication, and fair play ๐Ÿ†. We should celebrate our differences while still coming together as one big family ๐ŸŒŽ. Gary Neville might think his way is more "patriotic", but I think Southgate gets it ๐Ÿ˜Š. Let's give Gareth a round of applause for spreading some positivity and unity vibes ๐Ÿ’ช!

omg i totally get what Gareth is sayin ๐Ÿ’ก he's right, people get so caught up in the negativity around the St George's flag ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‘Ž that it can create more divisions than unity. like, can't we just focus on what unites us, instead of getting hung up on what separates us? ๐Ÿค for example, i've seen so many ppl from different backgrounds come together to support england at the football, and it's amazing! ๐Ÿ’– Gareth is right, there's more to people than just a flag or a team they're supporting. let's all try to be more understanding and less divided, yeah? ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ‘

I'm not sure I agree with Gareth Southgate on this one ๐Ÿค”... like, what's wrong with flying the St George's flag if you want to show some English pride? It's just a symbol, right? But at the same time, I get where he's coming from. If it's causing divisions and hurt feelings, then maybe we need to have a bigger conversation about what it means to be English ๐Ÿค. And I do think there's more to us than just our national flag... like, let's not forget that we're all human beings with common values and experiences ๐Ÿ˜Š. Maybe instead of focusing on the St George's flag, we should be talking about how we can come together as a country and celebrate what makes us unique in a positive way ๐ŸŽ‰.

idk about this flag debate tho... cant we just agree to disagree ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ? Gareth's worried that flying the St George's flag creates divisions, but I think it's all about perspective ๐ŸŒŽ. For some people, it's a symbol of pride & unity, while others might see it as a bit too much ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Gary Neville's at it again, ordering a flag to be taken down because he thinks it's negative? honestly, can't we just focus on the positives ๐ŸŒˆ? Gareth's right that there's more that unites us than divides us, but shouldn't we also respect different opinions?
