Gov. Hochul demands 125th Street subway extension, shelves downtown 2nd Ave. subway plan

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a major shift in her state's transportation plans, announcing that the long-discussed Second Avenue subway extension will instead run along 125th Street rather than its traditional route down Second Avenue. The decision marks a significant change to over a century of planning by New York officials, who have been working towards creating a train line connecting the Financial District to the Upper East Side.

According to Hochul's plan, three new stations on 125th Street will be added, culminating in a terminal at Broadway in Morningside Heights. The expansion is expected to cost around $7.7 billion, with the state covering the design costs, which must be approved by the Legislature as part of next year's budget.

The move is seen as a key step towards creating a critical connection for residents in Harlem who currently lack easy or accessible travel options east-west or access to the Upper East Side. The new line will provide Q train stops at Lenox and St. Nicholas Avenues, as well as transfer points to several other trains, potentially saving hundreds of millions of dollars in future costs.

The project is expected to be completed by 2032, pending completion of the second phase of the project, which extends the Q line through East Harlem. While some community advocates have expressed concerns about gentrification and displacement caused by construction, Hochul's plan aims to provide a more affordable option for residents.

When asked about the anticipated cost to design the proposed extension, Hochul's office said it would be revealed in her upcoming executive budget release next week. Despite the high costs, advocates argue that this project will have significant benefits, including moderate travel time savings and very high ridership projections.

I'm actually kinda stoked about this new transportation plan 🀩. I mean, Harlem has been lacking a reliable way to get to the Upper East Side for ages, and this is gonna be a game changer. Plus, it's awesome that they're considering affordability and trying to make sure this doesn't push out long-time residents 🚫 gentrification worries aside. The cost might seem steep at first, but if it means better travel times and more people using the train, I think it's worth it πŸ“ˆ. And hey, who knows, maybe this'll even help bring some new life to the area 🌼. Can't wait to see how it all plays out in 2032! πŸ‘€

OMG, can you believe it? The Second Avenue subway extension is getting a major makeover! 🀯 I'm all for it, tbh #SecondAvenueSubway #NewYorkCityTransportation. Adding three new stations on 125th Street will be a game-changer for Harlem residents who've been waiting ages for an easy way to travel east-west. πŸ’Ό The fact that the state is covering design costs is a huge win, and I love that Hochul's plan aims to provide affordable options for residents πŸ€‘. Of course, some community advocates are worried about gentrification, but let's be real, this project will bring in so much economic growth πŸ“ˆ. I'm hyped for the potential travel time savings and high ridership projections #SustainableTransportation #NYCInfrastructure. Let's get this done by 2032! πŸ’ͺ

lol what a massive u-turn 🀯 this Second Avenue subway extension thingy just changed plans like 5 times already... first it's down Second Ave, now it's on 125th St, idk when we'll get the real plan πŸ˜’ I need to see some pics of where these new stations are supposed to be, sounds like a weird layout. how'd they even decide this? was there a community meeting or something? and $7.7 billion is crazy πŸ’Έ what's the reasoning behind that number? is it just because the state wants to make a big splash with its transportation plans or is there some solid data behind it?

Omg, I'm low-key impressed by the Governor's new transportation plan 🀯! I mean, it's a game-changer for Harlem residents who've been waiting for so long for easy access to the Upper East Side πŸ’¨. I can see why some community advocates are worried about gentrification tho 😬, but if they're getting a more affordable option out of it, then I'm all for it πŸ€‘.

I don't know about the cost tho... $7.7 billion is a lot of cash πŸ’Έ! But if it means people will save money in the long run and have better travel options, I say go for it πŸš‚. And can we talk about how cool this new Q train line is gonna be? Three new stations on 125th Street? Broadway in Morningside Heights? This is what I'm talking about! 😍

I guess only time will tell if the benefits outweigh the costs, but so far, I'm feeling optimistic about this one 🀞. Bring it on, Second Avenue subway extension 2.0! πŸ’ͺ

πŸš‚πŸ’‘ I gotta say, this new transportation plan for NYC is crazy ambitious! I mean, who wouldn't want to hop on a train at 125th Street and get taken all the way down to the Financial District in like 20 minutes? 😱 It's gonna be a total game changer for people living in Harlem. And let's be real, $7.7 billion is a pretty steep price tag, but if it means making the city more connected and accessible... I'm all for it 🀝. Plus, it'll definitely help reduce traffic on Second Avenue, so that's a win-win! πŸ™Œ

Come on, you didn't know about this change? It's not like they're gonna build a subway line overnight. I mean, I guess it's cool that they're making an effort to help out Harlem residents, but 125th Street is kinda in the heart of Harlem already, you feel me? Still, if it saves people from having to take other trains or buses, I'm all for it. And let's be real, $7.7 billion is a lot of dough, so they must've thought it out. The whole gentrification thing is gonna be interesting to watch, though... πŸ€”

idk why they had to change the route lol πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ they've been planning it for like over a century and now its gonna cost $7.7 billion πŸ€‘. but i guess its good for harlem residents who dont have many options for getting to the upper east side πŸš‚πŸ‘Œ. the design costs are still gonna be a thing tho 🀯 can't wait to see how that plays out in next year's budget πŸ“ŠπŸ’Έ. maybe the benefits will outweigh the cost, fingers crossed 🀞

I gotta say, I'm low-key surprised about the change in plans for the Second Avenue subway extension. I mean, 125th Street as the new route? It's gonna be a game-changer for Harlem residents who've been waiting for this connectivity for ages! 🀩 The cost might seem steep ($7.7 billion), but like, think of all the time people'll save commuting to the Upper East Side... that's gotta be worth it, right? Plus, having Q train stops and transfer points is a major win. Fingers crossed the gentrification concerns don't come back to bite 'em.

πŸ€” This Second Avenue subway change is a big deal for Harlem residents πŸ“β€οΈ! They're gonna get easy access to the Upper East Side πŸš‚πŸ’¨, which is like, super hard to get right now πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. I'm not sure about the cost tho πŸ’Έ... $7.7 billion is a lot of dough πŸ’ΈπŸͺ. But if it means better travel times and more affordable options for people in Harlem πŸ πŸ’•, then I'm down with it πŸ‘Œ!

this is a really interesting development... I mean think about it, for over a century NYC officials were like "oh we gotta connect the Financial District to the Upper East Side", but what's changed? is it just that times are changing or has humanity shifted in some way? we're talking about gentrification and displacement here too... what does that even mean in 2025? are we still fighting for affordable living spaces or have we just accepted a new normal where 'affordable' is just a myth? the fact that Hochul's plan aims to provide more options for Harlem residents, but also acknowledges these issues, shows that she's trying to acknowledge the complexity of it all. $7.7 billion is a crazy amount of money, though... does that even feel like a step in the right direction or just a huge Band-Aid on a much deeper wound?

I'm low-key stoked about the new transportation plan for NYC πŸš‚πŸ‘! It's awesome that Kathy Hochul is shaking things up and trying to make a real difference in people's lives. I mean, think about it - Harlem residents have been stuck without easy access to the Upper East Side for ages... this new line is gonna change the game for them πŸ”„.

Of course, $7.7 billion is still a lot of cash πŸ’Έ, but if it means creating more affordable options and saving people money in the long run, then I'm all for it πŸ’•. And let's be real, gentrification concerns are valid, but Hochul's plan aims to be more inclusive, not exclusive πŸ‘Œ.

I'd love to see how this project actually gets implemented and whether it'll live up to its promises πŸ€”. But overall, I think this is a step in the right direction for NYC πŸŒ†πŸ’ͺ

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here... πŸ€” They're gonna shift the whole Second Avenue subway extension to 125th Street? That's a major money-maker for real estate developers and gentrification profiteers! The new terminal in Morningside Heights is just a way to funnel people into the already pricey neighborhoods. And what about the 'affordable option' Hochul's plan says it'll provide? Don't believe it, man... They're just trying to line their pockets with your tax dollars πŸ€‘. I've been digging through some research and found out that the MTA has been quietly selling off some of its land in Harlem for a whopping $100 million to some shady investors. Coincidence? I don't think so... 🚫

I think it's kinda cool that they're making a big change to the subway plan πŸ€”. I mean, it's been in the works for ages, but it's always good to see some progress, you know? The idea of having a new line along 125th Street is a game-changer for Harlem residents who've been struggling with lack of access to the Upper East Side πŸš‚. And let's be real, $7.7 billion might seem like a lot, but think about all the people who'll benefit from it - hundreds of millions in savings over time is no joke πŸ’Έ. Of course, there are some concerns about gentrification, but I guess that's a risk you take when you're making big changes like this πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Still, I'm all for it! It's always exciting to see infrastructure projects come together and make life easier for people in the long run πŸ’•.

omg did u no about nycs new subway plan? 🀯 they're ditching 2nd Ave for 125th St! i mean its a big change, over a century of planning and now they're like "yo we gotta try somethin diff" lol. but seriously, it's def gonna help harlem residents who currently cant get easy access to the upper east side. $7.7 billion tho? thats some serious cash πŸ’Έ. i hope its worth it tho, dont wanna be that one person who gets displaced by gentrification 😬. still, gotta give Hochul props for tryin to make public transport more affordable πŸ‘. can't wait 2 see how it all plays out in the next few yrs πŸš‚πŸ’¨

"Change is the law of life...and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." πŸ’₯πŸš‚πŸ’ͺ

I think it's awesome that NY Gov Hochul is finally giving Harlem residents a reliable way to get to the Upper East Side! $7.7 billion might seem like a lot, but just imagine how much stress and time people have been wasting trying to find other ways to commute...this is gonna be a game-changer πŸš€

OMG, I'm so stoked about this new subway plan 🀩! Adding stations on 125th Street is like, a game-changer for Harlem residents who've been stuck in the dark when it comes to getting around town. It's crazy that they're spending $7.7 billion, but think of all the people it'll help, you know? Plus, having Q train stops at Lenox and St. Nicholas Aves is gonna be a total game-changer for those areas. Let's keep our fingers crossed that gentrification won't be a major issue 🀞. Can't wait to see this project come together and make travel in NYC even more accessible πŸ’¨!

idk how they came up with 125th Street as the new route πŸ€”. its gonna change everything from Harlem to Upper East Side. i mean its not all bad tho, might be a good thing for some ppl who live in those areas but still gotta wonder bout gentrification and stuff like that πŸ˜•. dont get me wrong im all 4 affordable transport but lets see how this plays out πŸ€‘. one thing thats def is gonna happen is itll save ppl some serious cash in the long run, cant wait to see the numbers when its all done πŸ’Έ. btw who comes up w/ these huge budget decisions πŸ€”

Wow 🀯 - this is so cool! 125th Street as the new home for the Second Avenue subway extension is a genius move! I mean, think about it, Harlem has been missing out on easy access to other parts of the city for ages. And now, with these three new stations and a potential transfer point, residents are going to have a world of options at their fingertips. Plus, it's all about making travel more affordable and convenient for the community - can't argue with that! 😊

I'm kinda stoked about this new subway plan πŸš‚πŸ’¨. I live near Harlem and it's always a pain to get to the Upper East Side, you feel? So, if they can make it more accessible with a new line on 125th Street, that's a big win for me πŸ‘. Of course, $7.7 billion is a pretty penny πŸ€‘, but I guess it's worth it if it helps people like me get around easily. And the fact that they're trying to make it affordable for residents too sounds great πŸ™Œ. I'm not sure about gentrification worries tho 😬...but I trust Governor Hochul and her team to make the right call. Fingers crossed the project gets done on time by 2032 ⏰!
