Gov. Newsom to deliver final State of the State address amid $18B budget deficit

California Governor Gavin Newsom will give his last State of the State address on Thursday, as he faces a projected $18 billion budget deficit in his final year in office. The speech comes at a time when policy battles are expected to intensify as lawmakers attempt to close the gap.

Newsom's address is anticipated to focus on housing affordability, with many experts expecting him to continue pushing for solutions to this pressing issue. State Senator Jesse Arreguín, who chairs the Senate Housing Committee, believes that incentivizing and innovating housing production will be key to addressing affordability concerns. Newsom has been a strong supporter of streamlining regulatory processes to increase housing supply.

However, Assembly Republicans have released a rebuttal criticizing Newsom's record on affordability and governance. They argue that housing is now less affordable than ever, with families leaving the state and young Californians struggling to access home ownership. The opposition claims that years of mismanagement by Newsom's administration are paying the price for California residents.

According to political consultant Jim Ross, Newsom will use his address to shape his legacy and future ambitions. With his sights set on a potential presidential run, Ross believes Newsom will focus on an agenda that positions him for success in the long term. The speech is expected to begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

idk about this whole affordability thing... it's like cali's housing crisis has been around for ages and no one's really done anything about it yet 🤔 but at the same time, gavin newsom's been talking about this stuff for years so i guess he's got to give us something to look forward to 📺 his speech is gonna be all about "streamlining regulations" but let's be real, what does that even mean? more deregulation or just a bunch of empty promises 🤑

I'm thinking about how California's budget deficit is kinda like a big ol' puzzle 🤔... You got your projected $18 billion gap, and then you got these policy battles goin' on 💪. Newsom's gonna give his last State of the State address, and I reckon he's gonna focus on that housing affordability thing 🏠. Like, everyone knows it's a big deal for people wanna live in Cali without breakin' the bank.

But then you got these Assembly Republicans all like "Gavin's been bad at this whole governance thing" 👎... and I get where they're comin' from, but Newsom's all about streamlinin' those regulatory processes to get more homes built 🚧. I think he's got some good ideas on how to make housing more affordable.

And then there's the whole presidential run vibe 🗳️... with Newsom tryin' to shape his legacy and all that. I mean, it's hard not to see this as a setup for him to throw out these solutions and show everyone what he's got 💡. The question is, will they be enough?

🤔 I think Gavin's address is gonna be all about highlighting the progress he's made on housing, but also acknowledging the challenges ahead 🏠💸 He's got some tough decisions to make and some hard sellin' to do, especially with the opposition comin' at him from all sides 😬. But hey, that's what these things are for - showcasin' a leader's vision and commitment to the people 💪. I'm curious to see how he'll frame affordability as a major issue, and whether his message will resonate with voters 🗳️. Maybe it's time for some new ideas and approaches? 😊

I THINK IT'S CRAZY THAT CALIFORNIA IS DEALING WITH AN $18 BILLION BUDGET DEFICIT IN GAVIN NEWSOM'S LAST YEAR IN OFFICE 🤯💸 I MEAN, HAVING TO CUT FUNDING FOR THINGS WE NEED IS NO GOOD, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS HOUSING AFFORDABILITY. IT'S NOT LIKE HE CAN JUST MAGICALLY MAKE THE PROBLEM GO AWAY, BUT I GUESS THIS SPEECH COULD BE A WAY FOR HIM TO SHOW US HE'S REALLY COMMITTED TO FINDING SOLUTIONS 🤔🏠

So they're expecting Cali's housing market to magically fix itself now? 🤔 I need some credible sources backing up this 'streamlining regulatory processes' theory... Sounds like just another buzzword to me. What actual data shows that relaxing regulations on housing production will increase affordability? And what about the skyrocketing costs of living in Cali? That's not exactly the most encouraging sign for Newsom's housing agenda 📉

you know what's wild? have you ever noticed how food delivery apps are like relationships? they start out all fun and exciting, but eventually just get in your way and make you question every life choice 🤣 anyway, back to newsom's speech... i feel like he's gonna try to spin this whole affordability thing as some kinda success story. maybe the budget deficit is actually a good thing for california? idk, seems crazy to me 😂

im not sure about this whole budget thing...i mean, $18 billion deficit? thats like a huge chunk of change 🤯 but at the same time, housing affordability is literally everyone's top priority right now. i think newsom should just try to make some compromises with lawmakers instead of using his speech as a platform to bash republicans 🙅‍♂️ and maybe, just maybe, we can come up with some real solutions that dont involve blaming the other side 💡. gotta hope he gives us something concrete this time... fingers crossed 😊
