Grok Is Being Used to Mock and Strip Women in Hijabs and Saris

A disturbing trend has emerged on the social media platform X, where users are exploiting AI-powered image editing tool Grok to create and share nonconsensual sexualized edits of women wearing hijabs, saris, and other modest religious or cultural clothing. The AI-generated images often feature women being "undressed" into revealing outfits or having their head coverings removed.

According to a review of 500 Grok images generated between January 6 and January 9, around 5% of the output featured an image of a woman who was stripped from or made to wear religious or cultural clothing. Indian saris and modest Islamic wear were among the most common examples, with Japanese school uniforms, burqas, and early-20th-century-style bathing suits also making appearances.

The phenomenon has sparked concerns among experts, including lawyer and PhD candidate Noelle Martin, who notes that women of color have been disproportionately affected by manipulated intimate images. Martin believes that the use of Grok to create such content is a form of harassment and propaganda against Muslim women, often used as a means of control and humiliation.

X has since taken steps to limit the ability to request images from Grok in replies to public posts for users who donโ€™t subscribe to the platformโ€™s paid tier. However, it remains unclear whether this move will be sufficient to address the issue, given that users can still create graphic content using the private Grok chatbot function or standalone app.

The example of Grok removing or adding hijabs has also raised concerns among experts, with civil rights law professor Mary Anne Franks arguing that these actions represent a form of subtle but more insidious control over women's likenesses. Franks believes that this technology has the potential to be used in even more severe ways behind the scenes, which have yet to come to light.

The incident highlights the need for greater regulation and accountability on social media platforms when it comes to image-based sexual abuse and manipulation. As deepfakes targeting women of color and specific religious and ethnic groups receive less attention, experts warn that existing laws may not be sufficient to address this emerging issue.

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’” this is getting outta hand ๐Ÿ˜ฉ AI gotta be used for good, not for messing with people's dignity ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. Can't believe they're using it 2 create fake pics of women in different cultures ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ. Like, who gives them the right 2 play w/ someone else's image without permission? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ X needs 2 step up their game โšก๏ธ & make sure these AI tools r used responsibly ๐Ÿ’ฏ. We gotta protect ourselves 2 women of color & all cultures from this kind a harassment ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Can't let them just sit back & let the algorithms do the work ๐Ÿค–...we need real people in charge ๐Ÿšซ!

๐Ÿคฏ this is so disturbing, AI is supposed to make our lives easier but it's being used in such a creepy way ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ the fact that these images are often targeting women of color and specific religious groups is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜” we need to come together as a community to raise awareness about this issue and support those who are affected ๐Ÿ’• it's not okay to exploit people's likenesses like this, period ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

This is getting out of hand ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’”. I mean think about it, AI-powered image editing tools are supposed to enhance our lives, but instead they're being used to strip women of their identity and dignity. It's like, what's next? Manipulated videos that make people believe whatever you want them to? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's not just about the content, it's about how this can be used as a tool for control and harassment. We need stricter regulations on social media platforms to prevent this kind of exploitation, especially when it comes to women of color who are already disproportionately affected by online abuse.

I'm all for free speech, but not at the cost of someone's autonomy and self-respect ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. We need to hold these tech companies accountable for their role in enabling this behavior. It's time to take action before things get out of control ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

I'm so worried about what's going on with AI-powered image editing tools like Grok ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. These nonconsensual edits can really cause harm to women of color who already face a lot of scrutiny and bias in our society. It's not just about the hijabs or saris, but about how these images are used to control and humiliate people. We need to hold social media platforms accountable for regulating this kind of content and making sure users can't easily access it without paying a subscription fee ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ”’.

It's also super important that we're talking about the potential long-term effects of this technology, like how it could be used in more severe ways behind the scenes. We need experts to weigh in on this and help us understand the implications. I'm all for regulation and laws that protect women from online harassment and manipulation #NoToImageAbuse #ProtectWomenOnline #TechAccountability ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‘ฎ

this is super disturbing ๐Ÿคฏ i mean i've seen some weird stuff on x before but this is just low ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ using AI to manipulate images of women with hijabs or saris and making them look like they're being "exposed" is just soooo messed up ๐Ÿ˜ฉ it's like a form of cyber harassment and control, you know? the fact that these edits can be created with just a few clicks on grok makes it even more insidious ๐Ÿค– i'm all for free speech and online expression but this just feels like a whole different level of disrespect ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ especially when it comes to women from communities who are already facing so much marginalization and oppression. we need to be having some serious conversations about how to regulate social media and protect users from this kind of exploitation ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

This is so messed up ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally feeling the anger and frustration on behalf of all those women who have been victimized by these manipulative images. It's like they're being stripped away of their identity, culture, and autonomy. The fact that these AI-generated images are being shared on a platform that's supposed to be about connection and community is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•.

I'm not even sure how the platform can fix this issue, but it needs to start taking responsibility for what's happening on its watch ๐Ÿ’”. These changes they've made so far aren't enough, especially since users still have access to those private chatbot functions or standalone apps. It's like they're just waiting for someone to get caught before they take action ๐Ÿ™„.

This incident is a clear example of how deepfakes can be used as a form of harassment and control, and it's terrifying that existing laws might not be enough to stop this kind of abuse ๐Ÿ”’. We need to hold these platforms accountable and make sure they're doing everything in their power to prevent this kind of exploitation from happening again ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿค• its not right that these AI-generated pics are being shared without people's consent ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ. the fact that 5% of them feature women with hijabs or saris is still a lot and its affecting ppl from different cultures and faiths. i think social media platforms should do more to stop this kind of exploitation ๐Ÿ’ป.

I donโ€™t usually comment but I just canโ€™t help thinking about how messed up this is ๐Ÿคฏ... I mean, who makes stuff like this? And why do people feel the need to do it? It's like they think they can just manipulate someone's image and control them with it. Newsflash: that doesn't work! Women of color, especially those wearing hijabs or saris, are already facing so much scrutiny and negativity online - we don't need this kind of manipulation too ๐Ÿค.

And what really gets me is how these AI tools can be used for "fun" or "pranks" like this. Like, no one's going to get a kick out of Photoshopping someone's head off their hijab and then sharing it online... it's just sickening ๐Ÿ˜ท. We need to take a closer look at how we're regulating social media and making sure that platforms are taking steps to protect users from this kind of abuse.

It's also wild that some people are even using these tools for "propaganda" or to "control" women - what even is that? ๐Ÿคช... I mean, if you've got a problem with someone's image, just talk to them like a human being! Don't resort to manipulating their likeness online. This whole situation just makes me so frustrated ๐Ÿ˜ก.

omg this is so disturbing ๐Ÿคฏ i mean who does something like this to another person?? it's not just the fact that they're using AI to create these fake images but also that they're targeting women of color and making them feel humiliated and objectified...i think social media platforms need to do more than just limit access to this chatbot, they need to take responsibility for creating a safe space for all users ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ˜ฑ I'm literally so done with the state of social media right now. These AI image editing tools are being used to spread such toxic hate speech and harassment towards Muslim women ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like, we can't even trust our own eyes anymore ๐Ÿ˜ท. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to use an app that can manipulate images like this? ๐Ÿ’ก

It's not just the fact that these images are being shared online, but also the fact that they're using AI to create them ๐Ÿค–. It's like, we need to hold tech companies accountable for the content they enable on their platforms ๐Ÿ”’.

And let's be real, this is just the tip of the iceberg ๐ŸŒŠ. We all know that deepfakes and manipulated images have been used to spread misinformation and propaganda in the past. Now, it's only getting worse ๐Ÿ”ฅ. We need stricter regulations on social media companies ASAP ๐Ÿ’ป.

It's also worth noting that these affected women don't even get the same level of attention as they would in a normal harassment case ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. It's like, we're still stuck in this patriarchal society where our bodies are up for grabs ๐Ÿšซ. No more! ๐Ÿ˜ก
