Guimarães scores from corner before Newcastle cling on against 10-man Burnley

Burnley's Rebound at Turf Moor: How Newcastle Clung on Against 10-Man Burnley

Scott Parker's Newcastle United were fortunate to cling onto a one-goal lead against 10-man Burnley at St James' Park, thanks in large part to Zian Flemming's late penalty that salvaged some much-needed damage limitation. The Magpies had taken the lead through Bruno Guimarães's direct free-kick from a corner kick, but the Clarets were level for just four minutes before Lucas Pires was sent off after felling Anthony Elanga outside the area.

The game became increasingly intense as Burnley pushed hard for an equalizer. However, Newcastle's defense held firm, and the visitors' goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, was forced to make some crucial saves to prevent further goals from being scored. The Slovakian stopper, who had a few choice words for his former boss Eddie Howe after the game, looked like he had every reason to rue his decision to drop out of the Newcastle team last season.

Newcastle's lack of creativity in open play meant that they relied heavily on their set pieces to create scoring opportunities. Guimarães's goal, which was scored from a corner kick, highlighted this issue as Burnley struggled to cope with the Magpies' ability to whip in deliveries.

Seventy-four minutes into the game, Newcastle made a double substitution, introducing Yoane Wissa and Joelinton into the fray for Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga. Wissa's introduction seemed to have an immediate impact on the game as he began to create problems for Burnley with his quick movements and clever link play.

In the final minutes of the game, Newcastle were forced to defend a Burnley penalty when Jacob Murphy was given a clear handball opportunity in stoppage time. The Clarets' hopes of getting back into the game looked all but extinguished after that chance, and it was left to Zian Flemming to give his team a glimmer of hope.

Flemming had a glorious chance to equalize in the dying seconds but somehow failed to get his head to Marcus Edwards's inviting free-kick. The ball seemed destined for the back of the net before Dubravka leapt to make an incredible save, leaving Flemming with nothing but air.

The Clarets' goalkeeper was subsequently mobbed by his teammates as he celebrated a remarkable escape from embarrassment against a team that had taken him to task in the past.

omg what a game!!! 😱 Burnley were literally running out of steam after Pires got sent off and you can see the desperation in their eyes trying to get that equalizer 🤯 Newcastle on the other hand seemed to pick up the pace when Wissa came on and that set piece specialist Guimarães is a genius 💡 74 minutes felt like an eternity though, so glad they made those subs 🔥 I was literally thinking they'd collapse under all that pressure 😅

man this burnley game was insane 🔥💨 i got seats right behind the goal and it was literally a heartstopper when lucas pires got sent off 😱 burnley's gonna be so frustrated with that one cuz they're already on a bad run and now they've blown their chance at 3 points 🤯

i know newcastle didn't exactly impress with their creativity in open play but those set piece deliveries are gold 💰 guimarães's goal was the best thing that happened to them all game btw 🙌

and what can i say about dubravka? 😲 he's literally a hero right now, i feel bad for eddie howe tho 😔 but seriously, burnley's gonna have to do a lot better than that if they wanna compete with newcastle

omg what a game!!! 🤯 i cant believe burnley got away with that 1-0 win even though they were down to 10 men lol they really need to step up their game if they wanna make a serious push for the top 🏆 zian flemming is my man tho his penalty was pure magic ✨ but honestly newcastle played it safe and relied too much on set pieces gotta work on that creativity 🤔

OMG, what a game!!! 😱👏 Newcastle is literally so lucky they got out of there with only 1 goal up! 🤯 Zian Flemming's pen was the difference between getting destroyed and taking home some points. That Martin Dubravka is such a legend, he literally saved his team from embarrassment like 3 times in that game 🙌🏻💥 I don't get why Newcastle didn't create more scoring chances with all those set pieces... Guimarães's goal was just one time out of a few opportunities. And what's up with Scott Parker's tactics? 😂 74 minutes and they finally made some subs, it's like they were waiting for the floodgates to open!

i think newcastle's win is more luck than skill lol 😂, they kinda phoned it in and only got lucky with that penalty 🤞. zian flemming has gotta be one of the most unlucky players ever tho, always missing the easy ones 💔. burnley's defense was pretty solid, and martin dubravka's saves were huge, but still, 10 men is a big disadvantage 🤷‍♂️. i'm just curious to see how they perform against teams that can actually press them high up the pitch 🔍

man i was so on edge during this game 🤯 Newcastle was defo lucky to get outta there with only one goal 🙅‍♂️ Burnley just couldn't capitalize on their 10-man advantage and it was all about Zian Flemming's penalty 😊 the Slovak stopper is literally the real MVP right now 💯 his saves were clutch and Dubravka's reaction after that freekick? priceless 🤣

I'm still trying to figure out how Newcastle managed to cling onto a 1-0 lead with 10 men 🤯. Burnley's intensity was palpable and it seemed like they were going to break their drought anytime soon. I mean, who gets sent off for pushing someone outside the box? 😂 Lucas Pires, I think?

Anyway, Zian Flemming's late penalty is what saved Newcastle from a potentially disastrous loss 💪. That guy's got some serious legs! But seriously, how did Burnley not score when they had so many chances? Their set pieces are all over the place 🤔.

Newcastle's creativity in open play is still lacking, but hey, set pieces can make up for it 😅. Bruno Guimarães's goal was a beautiful strike from a corner kick.

Yoane Wissa's introduction changed the game, though! He brought some life to Newcastle's attack 🌟. And Jacob Murphy had a clear handball opportunity in stoppage time... Burnley needed that chance to be anything other than a non-changer ⏰.

Martin Dubravka is a hero! 😎 His save at the end was nothing short of miraculous. I mean, if he'd slipped up... 🤦‍♂️. What a game, though!

😅 Burnley's comeback attempt was super last minute 🕰️ I feel bad for Dubravka, dude 😊 10-men can't hold out forever 💪 But Newcastle did well to hold on 🙌 Guimarães' goal was sick 🤩 and Wissa's subs looked like a game-changer ⚔️ That penalty from Flemming was a turning point ⚽️ I'm just glad it didn't go in 😅 Dubravka's save was pure magic ✨
