He invented mini saunas for frogs – now this biologist has big plans to save hundreds of species

A biologist who once spent hours catching tadpoles as a child has now dedicated his life to saving hundreds of species on the brink of extinction. Dr Anthony Waddle, 35, is an award-winning conservation biologist working in Australia to combat the deadly chytrid fungus that has wiped out 90 species and threatens over 500 more.

Frogs play a critical role in the ecosystem, consuming insects that transport human diseases, and their skin holds potential as a source of new painkillers. However, the fungus is almost always fatal, rapidly wiping out populations. Waddle's innovative approach involves building mini saunas for frogs to raise their body temperatures and stave off the disease.

The experiment was successful: frogs in warmer shelters were less likely to fall prey to the fungal pathogen, which is temperature-sensitive. They also showed resistance when re-exposed. This good news for some species but Waddle aims to develop scalable solutions to help many more at risk.

Synthetic biology, a discipline that involves editing organisms by introducing or deleting genetic material, holds promise. Waddle and his team are experimenting with gene replacement for critically endangered species like the southern corroboree frog, which no longer breeds in the wild. The goal is to test this method across multiple Australian species and potentially share it globally.

While challenges keep him up at night, Waddle remains optimistic, driven by anticipation of potential solutions rather than dread. His excitement often keeps him awake - thinking about experiments and ideas that could make a difference in conservation efforts.

I'm literally fascinated by Dr Waddle's work 🤯... wait, what was I just saying? Oh yeah, I love how he's trying to save these species! But at the same time, isn't it crazy how some of these frogs are super good at surviving on their own? Like, they can totally thrive in harsh conditions without even needing saunas 🌡️... and yet, they're still so vulnerable to this fungus?

I'm all about supporting conservation efforts, but I also think we need to acknowledge the limitations of synthetic biology 🤔. What if it doesn't work out for certain species? Or what if it has unintended consequences? On the other hand, maybe it's just a necessary evil until we figure out better solutions... and honestly, who knows?! Waddle's enthusiasm is infectious, but I'm still skeptical about some of this stuff 😐.

Ugh, I hate when my opinions contradict each other 🙃. Maybe I'll just have to agree to disagree for now...

🐸 This guy is like the real-life version of Alton Locks from The Magic School Bus 🚀! I mean, who else can say they used to catch tadpoles as a kid and now saves species on the brink of extinction? 💚 I'm all for that mini sauna idea, sounds like something from a sci-fi movie 🍄. But for real though, synthetic biology is like the holy grail for conservationists right now 🌟. The potential to save countless species is mind-blowing... we just gotta keep him up at night with his experiment ideas 😂. Maybe one day we'll have frog-sized saunas in our homes too 🏠!

I'm literally keeping an eye on this guy Anthony Waddle. It's crazy to think about how his childhood hobby (catching tadpoles) has turned into a life mission to save hundreds of species 🐜💦. The thought of those mini saunas for frogs is actually genius! I mean, who knew warming up the little guys could be a game-changer in fighting off this deadly fungus? 💡 And now he's talking about synthetic biology and gene replacement... it's like sci-fi stuff right from his own backyard 🌳💻. The excitement is infectious, you can feel his passion and drive to make a difference. Keep an eye on this guy, I'm rooting for him! 👍

omg did you know frogs are like super important for the ecosystem? they eat bugs that can carry diseases to humans 🐜🦎 like, who knew right? so this biologist is trying to save them from some kinda fungus that's killing them off left and right... 90 species already gone 🤯 and there are more than 500 at risk 😱 i wish i could help with this but im just a newbie lol. synthetic biology sounds like something out of sci-fi though... gene editing and all that jazz 💻🔬

Omg I'm literally so inspired by Dr Anthony Waddle's work 🤩🌿 he's literally changing the game when it comes to saving endangered species! those mini saunas for frogs are genius 🤓 and I love how his team is experimenting with synthetic biology, that sounds like a total game-changer 🔬💡 I mean we need more people like him who are passionate about conservation and not afraid to think outside the box... I'm def rooting for him and his team all the way 😊👍

ugh, what's going on with our planet?! i mean, it's so cool that there's someone like dr waddle working tirelessly to save all these species, but come on! 90 species already gone? 500 more at risk? it's just crazy! 🤯 and the fungus is literally wiping out entire populations... no wonder he's always thinking about experiments and ideas at night, trying to find a way to stop this madness. synthetic biology might be the answer, but it sounds so complicated and what if it doesn't work?! 🤔 i guess that's just how it goes sometimes, we have to keep pushing forward even when things seem bleak. maybe one day dr waddle will be able to say he saved all the frogs... a guy can dream, right? 😊

Ugh, I just got to this forum thread on the biologist who's trying to save frogs from extinction 🐸😒. The article is super informative, but can we please get a more user-friendly format around here? I mean, I have to scroll through like 5 paragraphs of text just to get to the good stuff... it's like they're intentionally making us work for our news fix 😩.

And don't even get me started on the formatting. Why is there no clear heading or summary at the top of the thread? It's so hard to quickly scan and find what I'm looking for. Can't we just have a simple "Read more" button like most other websites? 🤦‍♀️

But seriously, Dr Waddle's work on building mini saunas for frogs is actually pretty genius 🌡️. Who knew something as simple as temperature control could be the key to saving species from extinction? It's all about thinking outside the box (or in this case, the terrarium) 💡. I just wish there was a more straightforward way to access his research and updates without having to dig through like 10 different threads... 🤯

man I'm so hyped for Dr Anthony Waddle's work 🤩! it's amazing how one person can dedicate their life to saving species on the brink of extinction. and his mini saunas idea is pure genius 🔥 I mean, who would've thought that raising frog body temps could be the key to staving off a deadly fungus? it just goes to show that with enough creativity and determination, we can find innovative solutions to some of the toughest conservation challenges.

I'm also loving the synthetic biology angle 🧬. gene replacement is a game-changer for critically endangered species like the southern corroboree frog. if Waddle's team can scale this up to multiple Australian species and potentially share it globally, that would be a major breakthrough in conservation efforts.

what I love most about Waddle's approach is his optimism 🌞. he's not driven by fear or dread, but rather by the anticipation of potential solutions. that enthusiasm is infectious, and I have no doubt that his work will inspire others to get involved in conservation efforts.
