'He was my hero': Thousands say goodbye to legendary Oakland coach John Beam at celebration of life

Thousands of people gathered in Oakland to bid farewell to legendary football coach John Beam, who was tragically shot and killed last November while teaching at Laney College, where he spent the last 20 years of his career. The emotional celebration of life drew more than 1,000 mourners, including former players, colleagues, and friends, all united by their love for the man they describe as a larger-than-life character.

For many, Beam was a hero - not just because of his coaching prowess but also for the impact he had on countless lives. Kevin Parker, a Skyline football player who credits Beam with teaching him valuable life lessons, said, "I am who I am today because of you, coach. I'll carry that lesson with me in everything I do." Rejzohn Wright, a former Laney College player and now New Orleans Saints cornerback, recalled how Beam called him the day after his father's passing, telling them not to fail.

Beam's family was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from the community. His sister-in-law, Tish Gallegos, expressed gratitude for messages that have been pouring in since his passing. "The amount of support we have received is overwhelming," she said. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as someone who "showed up" everywhere - not just on the football field but also in his students' lives.

Beam's legacy extends far beyond his coaching career, and many remember him for his humility and generosity. His friends from San Diego's Kearney High School class of '77 shared stories of how he would often wear leisure suits with white socks to school. "John was trying to be a ladies' man," said Walt Rashad with a chuckle.

As the community comes together to celebrate Beam's life, his family is taking comfort in the love and memories that have been shared about him. "We didn't lose a coach," said Mayor Lee. "We lost our coach, bigger than life."

It's crazy how John Beam's passing has brought so much joy & love to his community 🀝. I mean, he wasn't just a football coach, but a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for many people's lives. His humility & generosity are an inspiration - who else would wear leisure suits with white socks to school πŸ˜‚? It warms my heart to see so many people coming together to celebrate his life, sharing stories & memories of the impact he had on their lives. As Mayor Lee said, it wasn't just a coach we lost, but someone who showed up in everyone's life in a big way ❀️. It's amazing to see how one person can leave such a lasting legacy 🌟.

Man... just saw this crazy outpouring of love for John Beam. The guy was more than just a football coach 🏈 - he had a way with people. I mean, who else can make you feel seen and loved by someone from their past? It's like he left a mark that goes beyond the field. All these stories about his kindness and generosity are giving me chills 🀯... he was definitely one of those people who showed up for everyone around him. And to see how many lives he touched, it's just... wow πŸ’•

πŸ€” think it's fishy how they're celebrating this guy's life with such a big gathering... seems like more than just a farewell to a great coach 🏈. what if he was onto something big before his passing? maybe he had some info about the system that didn't sit well with them πŸ€‘. the way mayor Lee said "we lost our coach, bigger than life" sounds kinda cryptic to me... like there's more to it than meets the eye πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. also, what's up with all these people from different parts of his life showing up? doesn't feel like just a coincidence 😐.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the outpouring of love for Coach John Beam πŸ€―πŸ’•. I mean, it's one thing to hear about someone being a hero on the football field, but when you see how many lives he touched in such a profound way... it's just incredible ❀️. The stories about him calling Rejzohn Wright after his dad passed away? That's what coaching is all about, right? Building relationships and making a difference 🀝.

And have you seen the photos of him rocking those leisure suits with white socks from high school? πŸ˜‚ I mean, I know he was trying to be cool back then, but it just goes to show that he was always unapologetically himself. That's what makes his legacy so special - he wasn't about seeking fame or fortune; he was all about making a positive impact in the lives of those around him πŸ’«.

As for me, I think this is a great reminder that we don't have to be superheroes to make a difference 🌟. Even small acts of kindness and compassion can have a ripple effect that changes lives. Coach Beam may be gone, but his spirit lives on through all the people he touched, and I'm so grateful for that ❀️.

This outpouring of love for John Beam 🀝 really gets me. I mean, what's even more amazing is how his impact went beyond the football field – he was truly a community leader πŸ‘₯. The way he connected with players like Kevin Parker and Rejzohn Wright on a personal level speaks volumes about his character ❀️. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to remember a guy in leisure suits with white socks πŸ˜‚? It's not just about the football; it's about how he touched people's lives and showed up for them when they needed it most 🌟. I'm so glad Oakland is coming together to celebrate his life – it's a beautiful reminder that we all have the power to make a difference in others' lives πŸ’–.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing 🀯... Who does that? πŸ™ƒ But for real, it's beautiful to see how many people were touched by his life. The love and support from the community is palpable πŸ’–... I can only imagine how tough it must be for his family to lose someone so full of life. It's not just about his coaching skills, but the impact he had on everyone around him 🀝. As they say, he was a coach, mentor, and friend all rolled into one. Rest in peace, John Beam πŸ˜”

He cared about people's well-being, and that's something we can all learn from ❀️. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to be friends with someone who's got style like Beam rocking leisure suits with white socks πŸ˜‚? I don't know... I mean, it sounds super sad that John Beam got shot and killed, but at the same time, 1,000 people showing up to celebrate his life is kinda crazy 🀯. I'm all for honoring the guy's legacy, but do we really need so many people in one place? I've seen some pretty emotional tributes online, but this in-person gathering seems a bit excessive πŸ’€. On the other hand, it's awesome that Beam had such a huge impact on his students and players - that's truly inspiring πŸ™Œ. The stories about his kindness and humility are really beautiful πŸ€—. I guess what I'm saying is... maybe? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

That's crazy! 🀯 His legacy is more than just football skills, it's about the person he was - humble, generous, and genuinely cares about others. 😊 It's amazing to see how he made an impact on so many lives, from teaching valuable lessons to being there for people in need, like Rejzohn Wright when his dad passed away. 🀝 His family is one lucky bunch to have such an amazing community supporting them during this tough time. ❀️ The mayor's comment about him "showing up" everywhere hits the nail on the head - that's what made John Beam so special! πŸ‘

man... it breaks my heart thinking about John Beam like that πŸ€•. I can relate to how much impact he had on people's lives, you know? like when my favorite teacher retired last year and the whole school was just flooded with memories and messages from everyone who loved him 😊. It's crazy how one person can make such a difference in so many lives. I feel bad for his family, but it's amazing to see how much love and support he got from the community πŸ€—. The story about Kevin Parker is actually kinda inspiring - it shows that coaches aren't just about winning games, they're about making a real impact on their students' lives πŸˆπŸ’•.

Man... John Beam was like a superhero on the field, but he was also this awesome guy who cared about his players' lives off the field too 🀝. I'm getting chills thinking about all those stories of him helping Rejzohn Wright after his dad passed away πŸ’”. And can you believe he used to rock leisure suits with white socks at Kearney High? πŸ˜‚ His legacy is more than just football, it's about being a good person and making a difference in people's lives πŸ™. πŸ€” I'm totally down with this massive outpouring of love for John Beam πŸ™Œ but at the same time, it's kinda weird that everyone's talking about him as some kinda hero πŸ™ƒ like, was he really that perfect? And what's up with all these stories about his leisure suits and being a "ladies' man"? πŸ˜‚ I mean, I'm sure he was nice and all but c'mon people, get real πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. On the other hand, I feel bad for his family and friends who are trying to deal with this loss πŸ€• but can we not make him out to be some kinda mythical figure? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I guess that's just the paradox of life – you never know what you're gonna get 😐.
