Health workers, faith and labor groups call for accountability in Alex Pretti's slaying

Tribute Held for Slain VA Nurse Amid Calls for Accountability

A somber gathering outside the Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago marked the lives lost to a senseless act of violence. Alex Pretti, 37, a U.S. citizen and ICU nurse at the hospital's VA unit, was shot by a Border Patrol agent on Saturday, sparking outrage and demands for justice.

Those who gathered outside the hospital, including healthcare workers, union members, and faith leaders, were united in their grief and frustration. Scott Mechanic, an intensive care unit nurse at University of Chicago Medical Center, likened Pretti's fate to his own, stating that "it could have been any one of us" who was killed by federal agents.

The outpouring of support for Pretti came as the Trump administration faced mounting pressure over its immigration policies. Gregory Bovino, commander of the U.S. Border Patrol, was replaced by Tom Homan, a seasoned border enforcement expert, amid calls for accountability.

Aimee Potter, a federal health worker and union steward with the American Federation of Government Employees, highlighted the dangers faced by healthcare workers who must de-escalate volatile situations on a daily basis. "An injury to one is an injury to all," she said, emphasizing that Pretti's death could have been anyone else.

Nicolette Alberti, a resident physician at the University of Illinois Hospital, echoed these sentiments, pointing out that federal agents are not trained in de-escalation tactics, unlike healthcare workers. "This is nothing short of a public health crisis," she said, listing off several cases where federal immigration agents have killed or injured civilians.

Mechanic and Alberti emphasized the need for collective action to challenge the status quo and advocate for policies that prioritize human life over border enforcement. As Mechanic said, "We will not stop until ICE is abolished." The crowd's call for justice and accountability continued long after the rally had concluded, leaving behind a sense of solidarity and determination among those who mourned Pretti's loss.

OMG this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’” Alex was only 37!!! how could some border patrol agent do something so senseless & violent?! ๐Ÿ˜ก it's not right that these agents are allowed to carry guns without proper training or accountability... I mean, what if they were dealing with a medical emergency in the ICU instead of a migrant? ๐Ÿคฏ our healthcare workers are already putting their lives on the line every day and now we're adding federal agents who might not know the first thing about de-escalation?!?! this is a public health crisis for sure... I'm so tired of these border politics getting in the way of human life ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ฉ can't believe what happened to Alex Pretti ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ญ she was just trying to help ppl & get shot by some border patrol agent ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’” it's like they think de-escalation tactics don't exist in their training or something ๐Ÿ™„ and now we got another case where a gov employee kills someone & no one is held accountable ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ what's gonna happen to those ppl who are demanding change tho? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ช shouldve been done years ago, it's time for ICE to be abolished once & for all ๐Ÿ‘‹

๐Ÿšจ just saw that tribute for Alex Pretti outside VA hospital in Chicago and i'm still shook ๐Ÿคฏ can't believe a border patrol agent just shot her like she was nothing ๐Ÿ™„ what even is going on with these policies? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ anyway, if u care about social justice & human rights, follow @aclu & @amnestyusa ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ”— [https://www.aclu.org/](https://www.aclu.org/) and let's keep pushing for accountability ๐Ÿšจ

I'm so sad about what happened to Alex Pretti ๐Ÿค•. It's just heartbreaking that he lost his life in such a senseless way. The fact that federal agents are not trained to de-escalate situations like healthcare workers is totally unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ก. We need to make sure that our law enforcement agencies prioritize human life over border enforcement policies. It's not too much to ask for accountability, especially when it comes to tragic incidents like this ๐Ÿค”. The outpouring of support for Pretti is a testament to the fact that we will no longer stand idly by while innocent lives are lost ๐Ÿ’–.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ This incident is just so sad... I mean, can't we just talk about this stuff without someone getting shot? ๐Ÿค• It's not like Alex was doing anything wrong, he was just trying to do his job and help people. And now the whole thing has come down to immigration policies and who gets to make these decisions... it's like, shouldn't we be focusing on finding solutions that actually help everyone? ๐Ÿค” Instead of just piling more guns on the situation... ๐Ÿ’ฃ It's got me thinking about how all this affects healthcare workers too - they're already dealing with crazy situations and then some agents show up with guns... what are we even doing here? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

:( I cant believe its come to this, a nurse killed by a border patrol agent? its just not right ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that we have to rally for justice shows how broken our system is... healthcare workers are already under so much stress, now they gotta deal with this too... and the fact that federal agents aren't even trained in de-escalation tactics?! what were they thinking? ๐Ÿ’” we need to do more than just sit around and talk about change, we need to take action ๐Ÿšจ

This is so sad ๐Ÿค•... Can't believe another nurse lost her life over a border incident. It's not right that we're still having to deal with this stuff in 2025. We should be focusing on healthcare, not enforcing borders by any means necessary ๐Ÿ’‰. Healthcare workers are already doing the most important job they can โ€“ saving lives. They shouldn't have to worry about getting killed on the job either ๐Ÿš‘. And yeah, it's a big deal when you consider how much we're relying on people like Alex Pretti who genuinely care about their patients' well-being ๐Ÿ’•. We need change, and we need it now!

Man, it's just crazy to think that this could happen to anyone, you know? ๐Ÿค• A nurse just trying to do her job is shot by a federal agent and suddenly the whole system is under scrutiny. It's like, what's going on here? ๐Ÿค” The fact that these agents are not even trained in de-escalation tactics is wild. It's no wonder healthcare workers are speaking out against this kind of thing. We need some serious reforms to ensure that our public servants are held accountable for their actions.

I also think it's interesting that the Trump administration is trying to shift the blame, replacing one guy with another who might not be as... let's say, "experienced" in handling situations like this ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. But at the end of the day, it's still about human life and making sure that our laws are serving people, not just perpetuating a system that prioritizes enforcement over empathy.

It's gonna take some serious work to get to the bottom of this, but I'm hoping we'll see some real change come out of this. The fact that these healthcare workers are standing up for Alex Pretti and demanding justice is exactly what we need more of โ€“ collective action and a commitment to making things right ๐ŸŒŸ

can't believe this happens in the US ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿš‘ 37 yrs old nurse just doing her job and gets shot by a border patrol agent, it's just so wrong ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ meanwhile the politicians are more worried about getting reelected than solving real issues ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’”

I'M SO SAD ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT VA NURSE!!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT THAT SHE WAS SHOT BY A BORDER PATROL AGENT!!! ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿš‘ I MEAN, CAN'T THEY SEE THAT DE-ESCALATION TRAINING IS KEY IN THOSE KIND OF SITUATIONS?! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ IT'S LIKE, WE'VE GOT NURSES LIKE ALEX PRETTI WHO ARE ALREADY STRESSED OUT WITH PATIENTS AND now YOU'RE TELLING US THAT FEDERAL AGENTS CAN'T HANDLE THE SAME KIND OF SITUATIONS?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ IT'S TIME FOR SOME REAL ACCOUNTABILITY OVER THERE!!! ๐Ÿšจ

I'm really saddened by this tragic event ๐Ÿค•. It's just so frustrating when someone loses their life due to a mistake made by someone else, especially in a position of power like a Border Patrol agent. The fact that the agent was replaced after the incident is a step in the right direction, but we need more accountability and transparency from our government officials ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I also think it's really brave of healthcare workers like Scott Mechanic and Nicolette Alberti to speak out about their concerns and advocate for change ๐Ÿ’ช. They're putting their own lives on the line every day by de-escalating volatile situations, and it's not fair that they shouldn't be protected from harm as much as everyone else ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

We need to keep pushing for policies that prioritize human life over border enforcement, like Mechanic said ๐Ÿ’ผ. It's time for our government to listen to the voices of its citizens and make some real changes to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

๐Ÿค” This Alex Pretti's case got me thinking - what if we took the same level of training & resources to address police brutality cases as we do for healthcare workers? Like, can you imagine how many lives would've been saved? ๐Ÿ™ It's not just about immigration policies or accountability; it's about recognizing the humanity in every individual, regardless of their profession. We need to shift our focus towards creating systems that value human life above all else. ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’” I'm soooo upset about what happened to Alex Pretti ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ! He was just doing his job as an ICU nurse ๐Ÿ’‰, trying to help ppl in need โค๏ธ. It's outrageous that a Border Patrol agent would shoot someone for no reason at all ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. The fact that federal agents aren't trained in de-escalation tactics is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ - it's like they're more worried about enforcing borders than keeping ppl safe ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm so tired of these senseless shootings ๐Ÿ’€ and the lack of accountability from our leaders ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's time for a change ๐Ÿ”„! We need to stand together as a community and demand better policies that prioritize human life over border enforcement โค๏ธ. It's not just about Alex Pretti, it's about all the ppl who are put in harm's way every day ๐ŸŒŽ. We gotta make some noise ๐Ÿ”Š and fight for justice ๐ŸŒŸ!

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’” this is such a sad story, it's just crazy that a nurse got killed by a border patrol agent like that... i mean, what even is the protocol there? are they supposed to be dealing with medical emergencies or just making arrests? ๐Ÿคฏ it's not right that healthcare workers have to deal with this kind of stress on a daily basis. i'm so glad people are speaking out and demanding change. we need to make sure that our first responders, including nurses like Alex Pretti, are treated with respect and care... ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ’•

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing... ๐Ÿคฏ A nurse gets killed by a border patrol agent and suddenly everyone's talking about immigration policies? I mean, I get it, we need change, but can't we just focus on making sure our healthcare workers are safe at work? Like, what even is the point of having a medical center if you're gonna risk your employees' lives? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ It's like, come on, guys, let's talk about this in a way that doesn't involve violence or scapegoating. We need to find a way to balance our desire for security with our values of compassion and humanity.

And can we please just acknowledge that there are better ways to handle these situations? Like, have you seen those de-escalation techniques that healthcare workers use all the time? That's some top-notch stuff right there. Why aren't federal agents getting that kind of training? It's like, we're trying to fix one problem but creating another. We need to get our priorities straight and start valuing human life over border enforcement.

It's not just about Alex Pretti; it's about all the other healthcare workers who are out there risking their lives every day because they care about people like me. So let's take a step back, breathe, and try to figure this out in a way that doesn't involve more violence or division. ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿšจ This is getting outta hand! ๐Ÿšจ I'm all for protecting our borders, but at what cost? We're talkin' about trained professionals like Alex Pretti who are tryin' to help people, not some reckless cowboy with a gun ๐Ÿค . It's time for the Trump administration to take responsibility and make sure their agents are held accountable. The fact that they're already changin' commanders because of pressure from the public is pretty tellin'...like they knew somethin' was off all along ๐Ÿค‘.

And can we talk about how easy it is for these agents to get a gun and start shootin'? ๐Ÿคฏ It's not like they're special forces or nothin'. They're just your average Joe with a badge who's supposed to de-escalate situations, but instead they're killin' people ๐Ÿ’€. We need better training, better protocols, and more accountability, period ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

It's also wild that we're havin' to have these conversations because of what some crazy person did ๐Ÿคช. I mean, come on! Can't we just focus on findin' solutions to our problems instead of pointin' fingers at each other? ๐Ÿค” Let's work together to make sure this never happens again ๐Ÿ‘Š.

I feel so bad about what happened to Alex Pretti... ๐Ÿค• it's just not right that he was taken from us like that. I think we need to be careful not to jump to conclusions about the Border Patrol agent, though - we don't know all the facts yet. Maybe they acted in a split second and didn't mean to hurt him. On the other hand, we do know that immigration policies can be super complicated and stressful for people on both sides of the border... ๐Ÿค my point is, we should try to understand each other better instead of just being angry or defensive. And yeah, I think healthcare workers are doing an amazing job de-escalating volatile situations all the time - they deserve our support and respect! ๐Ÿ’ช

man thats just sad ๐Ÿค•... u can feel the pain in that community, it aint just about alex pretti, its about all us healthcare workers who got to deal with crazy situations daily ๐Ÿ˜ฉ... we gotta stand together, demand change and hold ppl accountable for their actions ๐Ÿ‘Š... its not right that federal agents r not trained for de-escalation, its a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿšจ... ICE should be abolished, period ๐Ÿ’ฅ
