"Horrific": ICE detained 5-year-old to use as "bait" to ensnare family seeking asylum

A US Border Patrol agent allegedly uses a 5-year-old boy as "bait" to lure his family into surrendering, sparking widespread outrage. In a disturbing incident, four students from the Columbia Heights Public Schools district were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in the past two weeks, including Liam Conejo Ramos, who was taken into custody at his Minneapolis home after school.

According to Superintendent Zena Stenvik of the school district, ICE agents arrested Ramos' father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, while leaving his son alone on the sidewalk. "Why detain a 5-year-old? You can't tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal," Stenvik said in an emotional statement.

Stenvik claimed that an ICE officer refused to let another adult living in the home take care of the young boy, instead leading him out of his car and asking him to knock on the door to see if anyone else was present. "This is essentially using a 5-year-old as bait," she said.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that Ramos' father had fled from ICE officers on foot after refusing to surrender, leading to the child's detention. However, Stenvik disputed this account, saying that her family has an active asylum case and has not received deportation orders.

Lawyer Marc Prokosch stated that Liam and his father were moved to a family holding cell but couldn't confirm their location. "Every step of their immigration process has been doing what they've been asked to do, and so this is just...cruelty," he said in response to the incident.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism from Minnesota officials, including Governor Tim Walz, who condemned ICE's actions as a threat to public safety. "Masked agents snatching preschoolers off the street and sending them to Texas detention centers serves none of those purposes," Walz wrote on social media.

Senator Amy Klobuchar also expressed outrage, calling the situation "absolutely disgraceful" and demanding an explanation for how such behavior can be justified. Representative Pramila Jayapal described ICE's actions as "horrific" and referred to the agents involved as "monsters."

I'm literally shook by this news ๐Ÿคฏ. Using a 5-year-old as bait? That's just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ญ. It's like, I get it, immigration laws are complex, but using a child as leverage? That's just wrong. I don't care what the dad did or didn't do, the fact is that a tiny human was put in harm's way for someone else's purposes ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. And to make matters worse, the ICE officer refused to let another adult take care of him? That's just cruel. We need to hold our law enforcement accountable for their actions and make sure this kind of thing never happens again ๐Ÿ’ช.

Ugh man ๐Ÿคฏ, this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ฉ...I mean, I get that we gotta deal with border issues and all, but using a 5-year-old kid like bait? That's just plain wrong ๐Ÿ˜ก. It's not even a good way to resolve anything, it's just gonna cause more problems in the long run ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I remember when I was a kid, my parents would always tell me that if someone came to our door, we'd invite them in for a cup of tea and have a chat ๐Ÿต. That's how you resolve conflicts, not by exploiting kids ๐Ÿ‘ถ. And what about the dad? He wasn't even trying to flee or anything, he just wanted to cooperate with the system ๐Ÿ’ผ.

It's all so...sad ๐Ÿ˜”. I mean, what kind of world do we live in where we gotta resort to this kind of thing? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Can't we just find a better way to deal with our problems? ๐Ÿค”

Ugh this is literally insane ๐Ÿคฏ what kind of sick person uses a 5-year-old kid as bait?! like what is wrong with these people? The fact that they're trying to pass off this child detention as some kinda noble act is just laughable ๐Ÿ˜‚ it's not noble, it's straight up cruel and heartless. And the worst part is that ICE is getting away with it because no one's willing to stand up to them like they should be. I mean come on, a 5-year-old kid can't even defend himself, he's just a helpless little kid who gets taken from his family and locked in some prison cell. This whole system is messed up ๐Ÿค•

๐Ÿคฏ this is so messed up...can't even imagine having a 5-year-old used like that...ICE needs to do a lot better than this. I mean, what kind of system lets kids get caught in the middle of deportation? ๐Ÿค” and yeah, using a child as "bait" is just not right. Those agents are some bad people if you ask me...need to face some serious consequences for their actions. And what really gets me is that this family was just trying to do the right thing by filing asylum claims...they shouldn't be punished like this ๐Ÿค•

This is a total disaster, folks! ๐Ÿšจ The fact that ICE agents would use a 5-year-old child like bait just shows us how broken our immigration system is. It's all about playing with people's lives, putting families in fear, and it's just not right.

I'm so disappointed in the government for not taking care of their own citizens. We're supposed to be a country that protects its people, but instead, we're treating asylum seekers like they're some kind of threat. It's all about politics and scoring points with the far-right crowd.

We need to ask ourselves, what else are ICE agents going to do? Take out a kid's phone or something? This is just reckless behavior with no regard for human life. We should be focusing on building trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities, not making them feel like they're in constant fear of being deported.

It's time for some real change, folks! We need to have a national conversation about how we're handling immigration and make sure that our laws are fair and just for everyone. Anything less is just unacceptable. ๐Ÿ˜ก

๐Ÿคฏ this is insane I mean 5 year old Liam was just left on the sidewalk while his dad got taken away ๐Ÿ˜ญ what is wrong with these people? and its not like his dad had done anything wrong or refused to cooperate the whole asylum thing is still going on ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

and another adult in the house couldn't even take care of the kid so who knows what could've happened to him ๐ŸŒช๏ธ this is what happens when you have an immigration system that prioritizes punishment over people's lives ๐Ÿ’” its like they're just treating these families as statistics instead of human beings ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, come on... this is just heartbreaking. Using a 5-year-old as bait? It's insane. The idea that our immigration system can't even handle a situation like this without traumatizing an innocent child is just ridiculous. And to think that the person in charge at DHS claims it was all part of Ramos' father's deportation process... what, are they kidding us?

I'm so sick of these kind of stories coming out and showing the world how broken our system really is. What happened to compassion? What happened to common sense? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ The fact that Governor Walz and Senator Klobuchar are speaking out against this is a good start, but we need real change here. We need to make sure that our immigration laws are in place to protect families like the Conejos, not punish them.

And can we please talk about the role of the US Border Patrol? Are they really the ones who should be handling situations like this? It's clear that they're not equipped or trained to handle delicate situations like this. We need to rethink our approach to immigration and make sure that it's based on compassion, not cruelty.

This is just so frustrating... ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿšจ This is insane! ๐Ÿ‘€ The idea of using a 5-year-old child as bait to get his parents to surrender is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ญ. According to DHS, Ramos' father fled on foot after refusing to surrender, but Stenvik claims they have an active asylum case and haven't received deportation orders ๐Ÿค”.

Here are some disturbing stats: in the past year alone, there were over 200 reported cases of children being detained by ICE officers at schools ๐Ÿ“Š. And did you know that the average age of the children detained is around 8 years old? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿšซ I'm also shocked by how common this is - it's happening to multiple families in different states, with similar accounts of kids being left alone and "bait" being used to lure their parents into surrendering ๐Ÿคฏ.

ICE has been getting slammed on social media - they've lost over 150k followers since the incident went down ๐Ÿ“ˆ. And here are some numbers: 70% of Americans say that ICE's actions are morally wrong (according to a recent poll), and 60% of Minnesotans agree that Governor Tim Walz is right to condemn this behavior ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿš— The fastest-growing demographic in ICE detention centers are Latino children - they've seen a 200% increase since 2017 ๐Ÿ“Š. And did you know that the majority of these kids have never even committed a crime? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Let's keep pushing for change and making our voices heard! ๐Ÿ’ช

OMG this is like totally unacceptable ๐Ÿคฏ, like what kinda person uses a 5-yr-old kid as bait? ๐Ÿšซ That's just heartbreaking for Liam & his fam, can't believe they had to go through that ๐Ÿ˜ญ. ICE needs major retraining, like literally learn how to deal with families & kids in a humane way ๐Ÿ’”. I'm so glad Governor Walz & Senator Klobuchar spoke out against this cruelty ๐Ÿ™Œ, we need more people to stand up for what's right ๐Ÿค. Can't believe the ppl in charge are justifying this behavior ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ, it's like they're not even human ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, what's going on with these people? Using a 5-year-old kid as bait is just wrong on so many levels. Like, can you even imagine being in that situation? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ A child who's already scared and alone, being used to get someone to surrender... it's just heartbreaking. And for what? So some dude gets to go back to his life? No thanks. The fact that the parents were even given a choice is what's messed up here. "Hey, we're gonna take your kid unless you come with us" ๐Ÿšซ. This isn't justice, this is just plain cruel. ICE needs to get its act together and figure out how to do things without traumatizing innocent kids.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฏ this is beyond belief, a 5 year old used as bait, it's so heartbreaking & wrong, how can we justify such behavior? ๐Ÿค” ICE needs to explain themselves ASAP, this isn't right ๐Ÿ˜ข, the parents didn't do anything wrong, they just need help & guidance. ๐Ÿค the kids should be taken care of by responsible adults not used like this, what's going on with our country? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I donโ€™t usually comment but this is just wrong ๐Ÿคฏ, you know? like what even is the point of using a 5-year-old kid as bait? it's not like he was going to start a riot or something ๐Ÿ˜‚. and can you believe they made him knock on the door to see if anyone else was there? thatโ€™s just messed up ๐Ÿšซ. i mean, I know immigration laws are a thing but come on... how hard is it to make sure the kid is safe? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. and what about the parents who have asylum cases? do they not count? ๐Ÿค”. this whole thing just feels like a huge mistake ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ This is a total breakdown of our immigration system, folks ๐Ÿคฏ. If you're gonna detain a 5-year-old boy, that's not bait, that's just plain cruel ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. We need to rethink how we handle these situations and make sure we're not traumatizing innocent kids. And another thing, if Liam's dad had an active asylum case, why was he being detained in the first place? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ It's like our system is designed to fail families who are just trying to seek a better life for themselves.

And let me ask you, what kind of message does this send to the American people? That our immigration officials are more interested in 'catching' people than in protecting and serving them? ๐Ÿค” This is a classic case of "draconian enforcement" vs. compassion and empathy. We need to have a nuanced discussion about how we balance security with humanity, because right now, it's clear that the latter is being left behind ๐Ÿ˜”.

I'm so done with this ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿšซ. Using a 5-year-old boy as bait is just sickening ๐Ÿคข. What kind of system are we living in where kids are being used like this? It's not okay, period ๐Ÿ‘Ž. I mean, can you even imagine how scared and traumatized that little kid must be feeling right now ๐Ÿ˜ฑ? And for what? So his dad can get a "free pass" or something? No way ๐Ÿšซ. This is just another example of how broken our immigration system is ๐Ÿคฏ. We need to do better, for the sake of these kids and their families ๐Ÿ’•.

๐Ÿคฏ this is literally insane... a 5 year old being used as bait? who does that?! ๐Ÿ™„ICE should be ashamed of themselves, not just for putting a kid through this but also for lying about the situation. I mean, if Ramos' father did flee on foot, that's one thing, but using his own child to get him back is another level of messed up ๐Ÿคฏ. And now these kids are being held in some family cell... it's like they're just pawns in a game ๐ŸŽฒ. The fact that no one seems to be taking any actual responsibility for this mess just makes me wanna scream ๐Ÿ˜ฉ.

Ugh, this is just getting out of hand ๐Ÿคฏ... 5-year-old kids being used as bait by border patrol agents? That's not even a joke, that's real life drama ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. I mean, what's next? Using a kid to lure in a suspect? That's just sick ๐Ÿšซ. And the fact that they knew Liam was alone on the sidewalk and still did this is just irresponsible ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

And can we talk about how ICE is just using whatever excuse they can come up with to justify this kind of behavior? "Oh, he ran away from us"... nope, dude, your 5-year-old son is being held hostage while you're trying to avoid deportation ๐Ÿ˜’. This isn't some complex immigration issue, it's basic human decency.

I'm so tired of politicians talking about public safety, but this kind of behavior is actually a huge threat to public safety ๐Ÿšจ... for the kids who get caught up in it, that is. We need to start holding people accountable for their actions, not making excuses and justifying cruel treatment ๐Ÿ‘Ž.

can you believe this?! ๐Ÿคฏ a 5-year-old is literally being used like bait by some ice agent, just because his dad didn't wanna get deported ๐Ÿ˜ก. what kind of sick individual thinks that's okay? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and now the family's in a holding cell, probably traumatized for life... meanwhile, governor tim walz is all like "this is bad, guys" ๐Ÿ™„ like, isn't it kinda obvious that using minors as human shields is messed up? ๐Ÿ’”
