How to get Doom running on a pair of earbuds

A Team of Hackers Has Successfully Ported Doom to a Pair of Wireless Earbuds, But Is It Worth the Hype?

In an astonishing feat that defies convention, a team of hackers has managed to squeeze the classic first-person shooter game Doom into a pair of wireless earbuds. The project, dubbed "Doombuds," is the brainchild of Arin Sarkisan, who utilized the PineBuds Pro earbuds' unique open-source firmware and community-maintained SDK to create an innovative solution.

To accomplish this feat, Sarkisan employed a JavaScript interface that leverages the earbuds' UART contact pads to transmit a heavily compressed MJPEG video stream to a web server via serial server. This process manages to deliver around 22-27 frames per second, far exceeding the game's maximum frame rate of 18 fps.

However, squeezing the entire game into these earbuds wasn't without its challenges. The project had to use a 1.7MB "squashware" build of Doom that eliminates certain animation and music features to fit within the PineBuds' limited 4MB flash memory capacity. Furthermore, the earbuds have only about 1MB of RAM, necessitating optimized code modifications.

For those who don't possess their own PineBuds, Sarkisan has set up an interactive Twitch stream that allows players to experience the game via doombuds.com for short sessions of up to 45 seconds. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the hacking community, proving that even seemingly impossible tasks can be accomplished with determination and expertise.

But Is It Worth the Hype?

While this project might seem more like an entertainment novelty than a serious gaming experience, it does offer some interesting insights into the technical possibilities and limitations of modern wearable devices. As we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with technology, such innovative experiments can inspire new ideas and spark fresh perspectives.

So, are Doombuds worth trying out? If you're an ardent fan of Doom or simply want to witness a remarkable technological feat, then yes, these earbuds might be worth exploring. However, if you're looking for a comprehensive gaming experience, it's essential to temper your expectations – after all, this is more of a proof-of-concept experiment than a fully fleshed-out gaming platform.

The Doombuds project serves as a fascinating reminder that technology can surprise us in the most unexpected ways. Who knows what other innovative uses we might discover for everyday devices and gadgets?

idk why ppl r so hyped about dis lol it's just a game on earbuds 🤣 but at the same time, i gotta give props to arin sarkisan for makin' it happen - tech can be wild like that! and yeah, 4mb flash memory is kinda tiny for a full game, but i guess that's the point of squashware, right? anyway, if u r a doom fan or just wanna see what's possible with wearable tech, go ahead and check out doombuds.com - it might not be the best gaming exp, but it's def an interesting experiment 💻🎮

idk about these doombuds, sounds like more of a novelty than actual fun... but i gotta respect the tech behind it 🤖. 45 seconds max is kinda lame, not exactly the immersive gaming experience i'd want. plus, all that compression can't be good for ur ears 🎧. still, kudos to arin and the hacking community for pushing boundaries 💻. who knows what's next? maybe some pwned smartphone turned into a portable gaming console 😏.

omg u gotta wonder wut kinda tech goes into makin this work tho 🤯 they had to squash like 99% of doom's features just to fit it on these tiny earbuds lol what's next, gonna see if u can squeeze minecraft onto a smartwatch or somethin? 🤔 and 45 sec gaming seshs is crazy short but i guess its cool for a proof-of-concept or something i dunno about the tech possibilities of wearable devices tho sounds like they had to get pretty creative with the code 👀

omg I'm literally mind blown by this doombuds thing 🤯😲! The fact that some hacker managed to squeeze an entire game like doom into wireless earbuds is just crazy! I mean, I'd love to try it out myself (if I had pinebuds lol) but 45 seconds isn't exactly a full gaming experience. still tho, it's so cool to see people pushing the limits of what's possible with tech 🤔💻 and who knows maybe this will inspire someone to make doombud-compatible consoles in the future? wouldn't that be something? 😂

man 🤯, i gotta say its wild how these hackers managed to squeeze doom into tiny earbuds 🎧 i mean, 22-27 fps is impressive considering the constraints 🤓 but idk if its really worth it in terms of gameplay 😴 45 second sessions just dont cut it for me 👀 its more like a novelty than a full gaming experience 💻 but at the same time, its dope to see what can be achieved with tech 🔥 and who knows maybe this sparks some new ideas 🤔 so yeah, if you're into that sorta thing, go check out doombuds 🎮

omg i mean i gotta say its kinda mindblowing that these hackers managed to squeeze doom into earbuds lol like its literally impossible but they did it 🤯 i'm not sure if its worth the hype though idk about playing a game thats 4mb small on earbuds with only 1mb of ram it sounds super limited. but at the same time its cool that they pushed the boundaries and showed us what we can do with tech. and yeah who knows maybe some creative person will come along and turn these earbuds into something really awesome 😊

🤯 I mean, have you seen this crazy thing? Some hackers managed to put Doom on earbuds 🎧! Like, how do they even... it's wild that they made a whole game work with just 1.7MB of "squashware" build and like 1MB of RAM 💻. I get that it's not meant for serious gaming but it's still pretty cool to see what's possible 🤔. And honestly, if you're into tech and Doom, it might be worth checking out 👀. But let's keep things in perspective, it's more like a novelty than a full-fledged gaming experience 😅. Still, it's awesome that we can learn from this experiment and see what new ideas come out of it 💡.
