Hunter Biden's lawyer Abbe Lowell has agreed to settle a $20 million defamation lawsuit brought by IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler. The case was dismissed by a federal judge in Washington, DC last month but the whistleblowers had been considering an appeal. As part of the settlement, Lowell will pay $15 million upfront with the remaining $5 million due to be paid if certain conditions are met.
The lawsuit alleged that Lowell's firm had defamed Shapley and Ziegler by accusing them of violating tax laws while working for the Internal Revenue Service. The whistleblowers claimed they were unfairly targeted after speaking out about Biden's business dealings during his presidency.
Lowell maintained that his firm never defamed the whistleblowers but agreed to settle in order to avoid a lengthy court battle.
The settlement comes as part of Lowell's broader efforts to defend himself against allegations made by Shapley and Ziegler.
A federal judge had dismissed the lawsuit last month after finding that the claims were not ripe for trial, meaning they hadn't yet happened. The whistleblowers then decided to appeal but settled the case with Lowell's firm instead.
