the whole thing is still mind-blowing to me - how they managed to create this beautiful game on the apple ii with those ridiculous byte-shifting techniques

. i mean, it's not just that prince of persia was super influential in the gaming industry, but also that it kinda blurred the lines between film and tech - like, can you imagine a movie adaptation of prince of persia back in 1989?

it would've been so different from what we're used to today.
and mechner's whole approach to game design is still super inspiring - merging puzzle-solving with action-adventure elements, using rotoscoped animation... he was way ahead of his time

. and yeah, tomb raider and uncharted are definitely its spiritual successors, but there's something unique about prince of persia that just can't be replicated

.
i think what i love most about this story is how it humanizes mechner - the fact that he was an indie dev who took huge risks and faced rejection, only to come back stronger with a game that would change everything

. and now, seeing how far the gaming industry has come, it's amazing to think about all the people who were inspired by prince of persia
