Illinois attorney general reaches agreement to protect $1.4 billion in education funding

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has secured a major victory for schools in the state, as an agreement reached with the Trump administration will safeguard nearly $1.4 billion annually in federal education funding.

The deal resolves a lawsuit filed by a coalition of states after the US Department of Education threatened to cut off funds from schools that refused to sign up for compliance with new diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The move was sparked by the department's interpretation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which aimed to promote DEI efforts.

However, many states, including Illinois, refused to comply due to concerns over the vagueness and legality of the requirements. Raoul joined with attorneys general from California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New York to challenge the funding threat in court, arguing that it was unconstitutional under the Spending Clause, Appropriations Clause, and separation of powers.

A related lawsuit by the American Federation of Teachers successfully blocked the certification request on April 3, paving the way for this agreement. Under the deal, Illinois schools are now protected from having their funds withheld based on non-compliance with the disputed conditions.

The preserved funding will support vital programs such as those serving low-income and rural students, special education services, teacher recruitment and training, English-language learner programs, services for foster care children, and career technical education. The agreement also involves 19 other states and Washington D.C., underscoring the significance of this development in protecting federal education funding.

Raoul's involvement in securing this deal highlights his commitment to protecting vulnerable students and ensuring that schools receive the necessary resources to provide a quality education.

I'm loving this news! It's about time someone stood up for those schools in Illinois 😊. I mean, think about it, if they had been forced to start these DEI programs without any clarity on what that even means, it would've been a total disaster 🀯. And with $1.4 billion at stake, it's not like the Trump administration was gonna give up easily πŸ’Έ.

Kwame Raoul is a total boss for taking on the feds and fighting for those schools πŸ™Œ. I'm just glad he didn't have to do it alone - it's awesome that he had some solidarity from other states and the AFT too πŸ‘«. This agreement is gonna make a huge difference in education, especially for low-income and rural students who already face so many barriers to success πŸš€.

It's all about making sure our schools are equipped to support every kid, regardless of their background or circumstances πŸ’–. And let's be real, this deal is a win for democracy too - it's proof that one person (or in this case, one attorney general) can make a real difference when they stand up for what's right πŸ’ͺ

Omg, can't believe how epic this is! 🀯 So, it seems like Illinois AG Kwame Raoul just saved schools from getting their funding cut off for not following those DEI programs. I mean, I get why they wanted to challenge it - the language was kinda vague and all that jazz πŸ˜’. But seriously, this is a major win for education in the US. The fact that it affects 20 states now? 🀝 That's huge! Schools with low-income and rural students will be getting more support, which is totally awesome. Plus, special ed services and English-language learner programs will get more funding too πŸ’–. This just shows how important it is to have strong AGs fighting for education and kids' rights πŸ‘

πŸ€” something fishy is goin on here... think about it, the trumps are makin a comeback with this kinda thing, tryin to slip in some DEI requirements without us even noticin'. but what's really goin on? who benefits from all this? seems like the fed's just tryin to strong arm states into doin' their biddin. πŸ€‘ raoul's doin a good job of protectin our schools, but is it 'cause he genuinely cares or is he just playin both sides against each other to get ahead? 🀝

I think it's awesome that Illinois AG Kwame Raoul was able to negotiate a sweet deal for schools πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ’Έ! I mean, who wants their funding threatened due to some vague DEI requirements? πŸ˜’ It's great that he and other AGs from states like CA, MA, MN, NY, and D.C. stood up for what they believed in and fought for the rights of schools to have control over their own programs πŸ™ŒπŸ½.

This deal is a major win for students who need extra support, especially those from low-income backgrounds or rural areas 🀝. And let's be real, special education services are not optional 😊. I'm just glad that the courts stepped in and blocked the certification request on April 3 - it was already a huge victory for schools! πŸŽ‰ Now, with this agreement, Illinois schools (and 19 others) can breathe a sigh of relief πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ.

Kudos to AG Raoul for his commitment to protecting vulnerable students and ensuring that schools get the resources they need to provide quality education 🌟. This is what we should be celebrating - not arguing about it πŸ˜‰

🀯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, but like, isn't it wild that they're just now making schools pay attention to diversity and inclusion programs? πŸ™„ I mean, I know it's been a thing for a while, but come on, 19 states are finally on board. The US Department of Education was being super vague with these new requirements, and Illinois basically stood up to them. πŸ’ͺ Kwame Raoul is definitely doing some good work over there as the Attorney General. It's all about making sure those schools get the funding they need, especially for low-income and rural students who are already struggling. πŸ“š The fact that it's a federal thing now is kinda cool too - I guess you could say Title VI of the Civil Rights Act 1964 is still relevant after all these years! 😎

I'm thinking, what does this deal say about our country's values? πŸ€” I mean, shouldn't we be prioritizing public education for all, not just the ones who fit into certain programs? It feels like we're playing politics with kids' futures again. Illinois got lucky, but what about those states that didn't take a stand? Are they just going to sit back and let their schools get funded by other people's problems? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And what about the Trump administration's interpretation of Title VI? Is this really about promoting diversity and inclusion or is it just a way to exert more control over state governments? I'm not sure, but as an attorney general, Kwame Raoul needs to do better than just defending his state. We need leaders who are willing to take on the big picture and fight for what's right, even if it's unpopular. πŸ’ͺ

omg, just saw the news about Illinois getting that sweet $1.4 billion πŸ’Έ per year from the feds! it's insane how many states were like "nah, we ain't got time" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ but Kwame Raoul and his squad were all like "hold up, fam!" πŸ‘« and now schools in IL are good to go for those programs that actually help students succeed πŸŽ‰ especially the low-income & rural ones who need it most 😊

Man, can you believe it? The Trump admin thought they could just swoop in and dictate what kinda diversity programs our schools gotta have? But Illinois AG Kwame Raoul and those other states like California & NY, they weren't havin' it! They fought for the rights of our kids to get a good education without all these extra hoops to jump through. And now we're reaping the benefits - nearly $1.4 billion is gonna get funneled back into Illinois schools each year, and that's straight up golden πŸ’ΈπŸ“š. Low-income & rural students are especially gonna benefit from this deal, plus our English-language learner kids & foster care youth... it's like, we're talkin' about the future of America here! 🌎

🀩 Can you believe it? πŸ™Œ Illinois just saved their schools from getting ripped off by the feds over DEI stuff! πŸ’Έ I mean, I get where they were coming from, but come on, who needs all that extra red tape? πŸ˜‚ It's like, can't we just focus on teaching and learning instead of trying to check all these boxes? πŸ“šπŸ‘¨β€πŸ« And good job to AG Raoul for standing up for Illinois schools - they really need that extra funding! πŸ’ͺ What a win for education! πŸŽ‰

I'm glad Illinois got this deal done πŸ™Œ! I think it's a big win for schools, especially for those with low-income and rural kids who really need extra support. It's crazy how some states thought these new programs were too vague or could be used to control what teachers teach... like, come on πŸ˜’. Glad the AGs stepped in and fought for what's right.

I'm also happy that this deal protects funds for things like English language learner programs and special education services - that stuff is crucial for some of our most vulnerable kids 🀝. It's not always easy to see the impact of these kinds of decisions, but I think it's awesome that AG Raoul is looking out for those schools.

I'm curious, how do you think this deal will affect the way we talk about DEI and equity in schools? Do you think more states will try to opt-out like Illinois did? πŸ€”

I'm loving how neat and organized all these state attorneys general are, coming together like a big team πŸ’ΌπŸ‘«! Illinois' Kwame Raoul must be super proud of himself for fighting for those schools and not letting the Trump administration bully them around 😀. And honestly, can you blame 'em? The whole thing with Title VI just seemed kinda sketchy πŸ€”... Glad it got sorted out in a way that helps all these students and schools, especially the ones that need it most 🌟. And 19 other states are on board too? That's like, total solidarity πŸ’ͺ! Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta get back to tweaking my blog layout... those font sizes just aren't cooperating πŸ“πŸ˜’

I'm relieved to hear about this huge win for Illinois schools πŸ™Œ! It's crazy how much was on the line - over $1.4 billion annually πŸ’Έ. I think it's awesome that Kwame Raoul stood up for what he believed in and fought for the rights of those students who need it most 🀝. The fact that this deal affects not just Illinois but 19 other states too is really significant 🌎. It shows that there are people like Raoul who are willing to take a stand for what's right, even when it's tough 😬. I'm all about supporting our teachers and making sure every kid has access to quality education - this deal is a big step in the right direction πŸ’ͺ

πŸ’β€β™€οΈ so great, another "victory" for our overworked teachers, who already have to navigate standardized testing & bureaucratic red tape... i mean, who wouldn't want to spend an extra $1.4 billion on their own salaries & benefits? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and let's not forget the countless hours they'll spend trying to decipher the meaning behind "diversity, equity, and inclusion" programs – just what every teacher needs, more complexity in their already-packed schedule πŸ˜’.

omg, like what a huge win for schools in illinois lol πŸ€©πŸ“š... i mean, $1.4 billion is a ton of money and it's all because kwame raoul stood up to the trump admin πŸ™Œ... it's crazy that other states joined him on this too, 19+ states means a lot more funding for education which is defo needed esp with all the issues they're dealing with πŸ€”πŸ’Έ
