it's amazing how her diaries have gained so much respect now, especially with all the personal stuff she shares about her relationships and struggles. i feel like we're living in a time where writing is more accepted as therapy than ever before 
and helen garner's story is like a testament to that. at the same time, it's also interesting to see how she's grappling with aging and cognitive decline - does she think her writing will change or become less relevant because of it?

Also, £50k is a lot of money, but what's with the prize itself? Is it just because it's prestigious or is there something more to it? And why do critics take decades to come around and praise her work? What changed in 2024 that made everyone suddenly see her as "serious" author?
