Iran has labeled European armies "terrorist groups" in response to the EU's designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as such. The move was made under Article 7 of Iran's Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organisation, according to Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Ghalibaf described the European Union's decision as a "blind obedience" to American interests and said that Europeans have effectively shot themselves in the foot by designating Iran's military wing. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas had announced the designation of the IRGC, citing repression and saying it could not go unanswered.
Iran has reported 3,117 deaths during protests, with at least 2,427 described as innocent protesters or security forces killed. The country also cut off internet and mobile access nationwide on January 8, amid widespread unrest.
The move comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, with President Donald Trump repeatedly threatening military strikes against the Islamic Republic. However, Trump recently stated that Iran was "seriously talking" to the US over negotiations.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that any attack on the country would lead to a regional conflict. The Iranian nation will strike back strongly if attacked and harassed, according to Khamenei.
