Italy’s Winter Olympics security plan keeps ICE in advisory role

Italy is gearing up for a complex security operation during the upcoming Winter Olympics, boasting a substantial force of over 6,000 law enforcement officers. The Italian authorities will be in charge of managing all operations, including drone surveillance and cybersecurity monitoring, while US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel will serve as advisors.

The Games, which take place from February 6 to February 22, will see around 3,500 athletes participate across two main hubs in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, with additional events held elsewhere. This event promises to be one of the most extensive security operations Italy has undertaken, considering the expected 2 million visitors, including 60,000 for the opening ceremony at Milan's San Siro stadium.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the US delegation, while Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has emphasized that all security operations within Italian territory will remain under the sole responsibility of the country's authorities. ICE staffers will be present solely in US diplomatic offices such as the Milan consulate, with no involvement on the ground. However, their Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) division will provide intelligence support to Italian authorities by focusing on cybercrimes and national security threats.

Despite these assurances, some Italians remain apprehensive about the presence of ICE agents, citing concerns over the agency's handling of immigration enforcement in the US. As a result, various opposition groups and left-wing unions are planning protests during the Games.

I'm tellin' ya, something fishy is goin' on here... Italy's got 6,000 law enforcement officers ready to roll, but it's not just about keepin' an eye on the Olympics crowd 🤔. Those US ICE agents, they're only at the consulate offices, but their HIS division is already diggin' into cybercrimes and national security threats 🚫. What if it's a smokescreen? What if Italy's really worried about somethin', but can't talk about it? And now you got opposition groups protestin' just 'cause they don't like the way ICE handles immigration... it's all connected, I'm sure of it 🔗.

I don't know how I feel about this yet... it sounds like Italy is trying to do the right thing by keeping security operations under their control 🤔 but at the same time I can understand why some people might be uneasy with US agents being around, especially given what's happened in the past with immigration. And 6k law enforcement officers? That's a lot 😳 what if something goes wrong and they're not sure who to trust? My kids are going to be thrilled to watch the Olympics but I'm kinda worried about all this security stuff...

🤞 I'm a bit worried about the whole situation with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel showing up at the Olympics 🏅. I get that they're gonna be advisors and all, but it's still some pretty big people in the crowd 😬. I mean, we've seen what can happen when authorities meet protests on a massive scale... let's hope everything stays calm and peaceful! 💖 It's gonna be crazy having 2 million visitors and 60,000 at one event 🤯, so extra security is definitely needed. Italy's got this tho 💪

man 6k law enforcers for winter olympics is kinda excessive 🤔 dont get me wrong its good theyre gonna have cybersecurity and drone surveillance but cant they just use italian authorities already? and whats with ice ppl being advisors and not actually doing anything on the ground? seems like a waste of resources to me 💸

i also feel bad for italians who are worried about ice agents showing up at protests 🤕 its just not right that theyre still dealing with immigration issues despite all these assurances. and whats with opposition groups planning demos during olympics? cant they just do it some other time? 🏅

ICE agents going undercover as peaceful protesters in Italy? 😒 [GIF of a person putting on a fake mustache and trying to blend in]
Italy's security operations are like a fancy Italian recipe – lots of ingredients, but will it all come together smoothly? 🍝👀 [Image of a chef frantically stirring a pot with too many ingredients]
Matteo Piantedosi says ICE agents will only be present in diplomatic offices... but let's be real, they'll probably end up at the buffet too 🍴👮‍♂️ [GIF of a sneaky security guard snatching a cannoli]

what's going on with all these cops & drone surveillance? i mean, 6k law enforcers is crazy! 🤯 is it really that bad in Italy? 🤔 and why do they need help from the US about cybersecurity? is it because Italy isn't tech-savvy enough? 📊 or what's going on with these protests? are people just worried about ICE showing up at their doorstep? 🚨 i feel like there should be more info about this, you know? transparency, stuff... 💡

Dude I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation 🤯. Winter Olympics in Italy? Sounds like something out of a movie from 2004 or so when they had that crazy snowstorm in Salt Lake City... Anyway, I get why Italy needs all these law enforcement officers and drone surveillance - it's a big deal with over 2 million visitors expected! But on the other hand, I'm not sure if it's necessary to have US ICE people showing up just to give advice 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, cybersecurity is super important, but can't Italy handle that stuff all by themselves? And those protests planned during the Games? Yeah, that's a bummer 😔. It's gonna be a long 16 days...

I think it's pretty obvious that having US ICE personnel around is just gonna be a huge distraction & stress factor for the Italian authorities. I mean, who needs 6k law enforcement officers when you've got 60k visitors comin' in? It's like they're makin' a big deal outta nothin'. Plus, what's with all these protests from opposition groups? They should be thankin' us for helpin' out with security, not protestin' about it. ICE might have had some issues in the past, but I'm sure they've learned from their mistakes & are just tryin' to do their job now. It's like we're all paranoid or somethin'.
