Jamiroquai review – hat-sporting acid jazz superstars are slick but lack substance

Jay Kay's Hat Game Can't Save Jamiroquai from Lack of Substance

The 90s acid jazz scene is still celebrated today, but it seems the original crowd-pleasers aren't quite as fluffy and oversized as they used to be. Jay Kay, the sole founding member of Jamiroquai, drew a crowd eager for three decades of his music in Glasgow last night. But despite his impressive hat collection – he wore four different headpieces during the performance – the live show couldn't compensate for a lack of substance in the setlist.

The band's reliance on flashy production often gets lost when translated to a live setting, with sweeping strings and beats from tracks like "Little L" and "Canned Heat" getting drowned out by the mix. However, there are some bright spots – Jay Kay's impressive vocal range is still intact after 30 years, as showcased in early single "Too Young to Die." The more laid-back arrangements of "Seven Days in Sunny June" and the live instrumentation added a bit of vitality to these tracks.

Unfortunately, the overall polish of the performance can't make up for the absence of depth in many of the songs. Tracks like "Cloud 9," which aims for gospel vibes but falls flat, and "Tallulah," with its funk elements but lack of sensuality, feel more like facsimiles than genuine experiences. The band's tribute to disco also feels half-hearted, lacking the transcendence that made the genre so iconic in the first place.

Despite this, Jay Kay and his band will likely continue to play these songs competently for their devoted fanbase, who won't need conversion. But for anyone hoping for a truly immersive live experience, Jamiroquai's legacy act status is a reminder that sometimes polish isn't enough – substance matters.

omg, i was so hyped to see jamiroquai live 🤩 but honestly, jay kay's hat game couldn't save them from feeling like they're just going through the motions 🎩👎 the production is always so over-the-top in the studio but when it comes to a live show, it just gets lost in the mix 📚 and don't even get me started on how flat some of the tracks feel 😴 "cloud 9" is like, the ultimate disappointment - they're trying to bring that disco vibe but it's just not working 💃 and i loved jay kay's vocals though 🎤 he still has that insane range, btw 👏

🤔 I mean, Jay Kay's hat game is def on point 🎩💁‍♂️, but it can't save Jamiroquai from feeling like a bit of a relic of the past. They're still celebrating their 90s acid jazz vibes, but to me, that's just not enough to carry them forward in today's music scene. I get why their old crowd loves 'em, but for new fans or people who want something more, it feels like they're playing some familiar tunes without adding much depth or substance. Maybe Jay Kay's vocals are still strong 🎤, but the rest of the songs just feel like rehashed versions of themselves.

🤔 I gotta say, I loved Jamiroquai in the 90s, their energy was infectious! Jay Kay's vocals are still fire 💥 and his hat game is on point 🎩, but you're right, the live show felt a bit shallow. They need to find that balance between flashy production and actual substance. It's like they're trying to recreate the magic of the 90s without fully embracing it 🕰️. What do you think is missing from their setlists? Should they stick with what works or try something new? 👀

ugh I was so hyped to see Jay Kay live 🤯 and I loved him back in the 90s but this show just felt like a nostalgia trip 🎉 his hats were on point tho lol 🤣 but honestly it's sad to see that the magic of Jamiroquai is fading away some songs just didn't translate to the live setting and the production was overkill 🎶 the vocals are still amazing tho can't deny Jay Kay's range 💁‍♂️ but for a truly unforgettable show, I'd need more substance not just flashy visuals 📺

🤔 I gotta say, I was super hyped to see Jay Kay and the lads back on stage 🎸, but that hat collection of his was actually kinda stealing the show 😂. For real though, Jamiroquai's been a staple of my 90s vibes for ages 📚, and it's crazy how their music still holds up today 💪. I mean, Jay Kay's voice is still on point after all these years 🎤, but some of the newer tracks felt like they were just going through the motions 💔. The live instrumentation was a nice touch though 🎸, and I loved seeing those old-school arrangements get a fresh spin. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I wish they'd take more risks and push the boundaries of what they do, you know? 🤝 Still, their fans will likely be totally stoked to see them play these classics live, so I'm not mad at 'em 😊.

omg u guys i just saw the funniest video of a cat trying to "play" piano and it was literally hilarious 🐈😂 i mean what even is this thing where cats try to do human things lol anyway back to jamiroquai i kinda get what ur saying about their live show being more flashy than substance but have u ever been to one of those retro festivals where they just play a bunch of 80s and 90s music all day? that's my idea of fun 🎉

im not surprised 🤔 jamiroquai's music has always been more about the vibe than actual substance anyway lol. i mean jay kay's hat game though 😂 four different headpieces? that's dedication to fashion! but seriously, i loved "too young to die" in school, it's still one of their best tracks imo. still, 30 years on and they're still playing the same setlist 🤯 maybe time for some new material?

I'm telling ya, something fishy is goin' on with Jay Kay's live shows 🤔. That hat collection of his? Just a distraction from the lackluster setlist, if you ask me. I mean, what's up with all these overproduced tracks that just don't translate to a live setting? It's like they're more worried about lookin' cool on stage than actually deliverin' somethin' real. And don't even get me started on the "cloud 9" thing – sounds like some sorta marketing ploy to me 🤑. I'm all for Jamiroquai bein' a legacy act and all, but can't they just bring their A-game for once? It's like they're phoning it in, you know? 😒

I was really hyped to see Jay Kay perform live 🤩, but it felt like the whole show was missing something 💔. Don't get me wrong, he still has that iconic voice and style, but I think Jamiroquai's music is way more than just catchy beats and flashy production 🎶. They need to mix it up a bit, you know? Maybe throw in some new jams or remixes to keep the crowd engaged 🔄. But hey, those hat game skills are on point 😂!

🤔 I mean, have you seen Jay Kay's hat game lately? 🎩 Four hats in one concert? That's dedication! But seriously, it was like he was trying to compensate for the lack of depth in their setlist. Remember when Jamiroquai used to be all about that acid jazz vibe? Now it just feels like they're phoning it in. And don't even get me started on "Cloud 9"... I mean, come on, it's like they're trying to be disco but not really getting it right. 😐 Still, the guy can still rock out with the best of 'em, and his vocals are still on point. But yeah, substance over polish any day, you know? 🎵

🎸 I went to one of those 90s jammer gigs last year and it was like watching a well-oiled machine - all the right moves, but you could feel the lack of heart in there 😐. Jay Kay's got some serious pipes on him, no doubt, but I reckon he's relying too much on his iconic status to carry the show. A bit more depth in the setlist would've been a welcome change 🎶

Man I was at this concert and it felt like they were playing some of the greatest hits on autopilot 😐... Jay Kay's got so many hats, I mean, 4 different ones! 🎩 But seriously, their music just wasn't as fresh as it used to be when we were all listening to them in college. It was like they're trying too hard to make it feel new again with fancy production and stuff. Don't get me wrong, the guy's still got some serious vocal chops 🙌, but "Too Young to Die" is just one of those songs that never gets old, you know? The newer tracks just didn't have that same magic as the classics...

man, Jay Kay's hat game is strong 💁‍♂️ but you can tell the band's been relying on nostalgia too much 🤷‍♂️ their music just doesn't hold up live... all that production gets lost in the mix and it feels like they're just going through the motions 🕺. I love Jay Kay's voice though, he's still got that range 🔥 but some of these songs feel like they're just trying too hard to be funky or spiritual 🤷‍♂️. can't say I was blown away by the whole thing... still a fan, but I need more depth in their live shows 😐

🤔 I mean, Jay Kay's hat game is definitely fire 🔥, but you can only take so much from one headpiece. The thing is, their setlist just felt kinda... empty 😐. They're still trying to recreate that magic of the 90s acid jazz scene, but it's not quite the same when you're playing all those hits in a live setting. I think they relied too much on production tricks and lost some of that raw energy. Still, Jay Kay's vocals are 💥 and he can pull off any hat he puts on 😂!

man I'm still trying to figure out how Jay Kay's 4 hats at once became a thing 🤯 it was actually pretty cool though! but seriously the hat game couldn't save jamiroquai from sounding like they're just going through the motions... i mean I love jay kay's vocals as much as the next person, but come on guys can't you mix things up a bit more? and what's with all these songs that are trying to be something they're not?! cloud 9 is literally the only jamiroquai song that still gives me life 🎶

I'm so over the 90s revival scene... it's all about the hat now lol 🤣♂️. Seriously though, I went to see Jay Kay live last year and was really disappointed with the setlist. He can still rock a crowd, don't get me wrong, but all those flashy production elements just don't translate well live. It's like he's trying too hard to be funky again 🕺. And can we talk about how they butchered some of their iconic tracks? I mean, what happened to the soul and emotion that made us love them in the first place? 🤔 The band's just not as tight as they used to be, if you ask me 👎.

🎸 I gotta say, I was pretty hyped to see Jay Kay and the lads bring their acid jazz vibes to Glasgow, but let me tell you, the nostalgia wore off after the first 20 minutes of the show 🕰️. Don't get me wrong, Jay's got the vocal range of a freaking god, but when it comes down to it, the music just didn't feel... real 😐.

I mean, we're all about that nostalgia life when it comes to Jamiroquai, and I'm guilty as charged too – who doesn't love "Little L" or "Canned Heat"? 🎶 But let's be real, some of those tracks sound like they were made for a Saturday night party playlist, not an actual live show 💃. The production is always so polished, it feels like you're listening to the album in the car, not actually watching these guys rock out on stage 🚗.

And don't even get me started on "Cloud 9" – what's up with that one? It sounds like they just phoned it in, tried to cash in on the whole disco vibe without putting any real thought into it 💸. And the tribute to disco was super half-baked – where's the magic? Where's the soul? 🕺

All in all, Jamiroquai might be one of those bands that'll always have a special place in my heart because I grew up on their music, but as a live show? Not exactly blowing anyone away 🤔. Give me some substance over polish any day! 💯

man i was at the gig and yeah jay kay looks like he just stepped out of a 90s music video lol but for real tho his hat game is on point 4 different hats in one show what's next 10?

anyway gotta agree with the article jamiroquai's live shows are still fun but u can tell they're relying too much on that slick production which loses the energy when u see them live. plus jay kay's vocals are insane i mean it's crazy he's still holding his own after all these years.

but yeah some tracks felt like they were phoned in or whatever and the disco tribute was pretty meh i get that the band wants to pay homage but sometimes less is more, you feel?
