Kwame Brathwaite, photographer of ‘Black is Beautiful’ movement, dies at 85 | CNN

Man, 85 is old even for a legend like Kwame Brathwaite 🙏. I mean, the guy was still going strong with exhibitions and whatnot until he passed away. His 'Black is Beautiful' movement was so ahead of its time, it's crazy to think about how much impact his work had on art and culture. The fact that he used photography to challenge beauty standards is still something we're fighting today 🤦‍♂️. I'm glad to see people are still talking about him and celebrating his legacy, but at the same time, it feels like we've lost a piece of history 💔. His work will keep inspiring new generations, though, so that's something to hold onto 💪.

Man... thinkin' about Kwame Brathwaite makes me wonder what it means to see ourselves in the way others choose to represent us 🤔. I mean, he was all about breakin' free from those Eurocentric beauty standards and celebratin' Black skin, but at the same time, wasn't he also perpetuatin' a certain image of Blackness? Like, was it still possible for him to be seen as an artist or a person, or did his work get caught up in that same trap he was tryin' to escape? It's like, we're always bein' observed and judged by others, and sometimes even by ourselves 📸. But I guess what Brathwaite showed us is that even when the system tries to silence us, our voices and images can still make a dent in the world 💪. Anyway, his legacy is somethin' to cherish and learn from... it's like, we gotta keep pushin' against those boundaries, you feel? 🚀

🌎💫 can you believe kwame brathwaite passed away 🤕 at 85?! i mean i know he lived an amazing life but still it's hard to wrap my head around this 😔 his work is like a time machine we get to experience the rich history of black culture through his lens and it's just...wow 📸💥 the way he used photography to celebrate black beauty was literally revolutionary 🌈 and i'm so grateful for his legacy living on through all the young artists and activists who draw inspiration from him 💪🏽🎨

🙏 It's crazy to think that Kwame Brathwaite is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on through his incredible photos 📸. I mean, can you even imagine what art history would be like without him? He was a true pioneer in challenging the status quo and celebrating Black beauty 💁‍♀️. The fact that he's still getting retrospectives at places like the Art Institute of Chicago is a testament to his impact. We're so lucky to have had him share his gift with the world ✨.
