Large NYC landlord accused of neglecting buildings agrees to $2 million settlement

A $2.1 Million Settlement: NYC Landlord Agrees to Fix 14 Buildings Across 3 Boroughs After Years of Neglect

The city has reached a deal with A&E Real Estate, one of New York City's largest landlords, to resolve nearly 4,000 code violations and allegations of tenant harassment at 14 buildings in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. The agreement comes after a year-and-a-half-long legal battle initiated by Mayor Eric Adams' administration.

Under the settlement, A&E will pay $2.1 million to cover about 750 tenants who have suffered under the company's negligence. Housing Commissioner Dina Levy hailed the deal as "sustained" enforcement by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development's Anti-Harassment Unit, which is the largest in its history.

The settlement resolves a long-standing issue with A&E Real Estate, which has been plagued by code violations at some of its properties. The company's CEO, Donald Hastings, framed the agreement as a partnership with the city, stating that he believes it will lead to improvements in the buildings and compliance with housing regulations.

However, A&E Real Estate also faces an ongoing lawsuit from dozens of tenants of the La Mesa Verde apartments in Jackson Heights, who are seeking repairs after years of alleged systemic neglect. The company's Executive Chair, Douglas Eisenberg, donated $125,000 to a super PAC supporting former Governor Andrew Cuomo during the recent mayoral election.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that A&E Real Estate has "mistreated and neglected" tenants for too long, but the city will not tolerate such behavior. The settlement is seen as a significant victory for tenant rights, with Housing Commissioner Dina Levy stating that safe, livable housing is an "absolute right."

If A&E fails to comply with the terms of the settlement, city officials say they may seek additional court orders and penalties.

man i was just at this new food truck fest in brooklyn yesterday 🀀 had some insane crab cake bites their setup was so cool too had a little too much coffee tho now im wide awake lol anyway back to this A&E settlement... think its kinda crazy how one bad actor can mess up entire buildings idk what the deal is with all these code violations but at least theyre taking responsibility and paying out some cash πŸ’Έ cant say ill celebrate just yet though cause those tenants are still dealing with the aftermath of neglect πŸ€•

I don't know about this one... $2.1 million seems like a pretty steep price to pay for someone to fix 14 buildings πŸ€”. I mean, what's the real cost of neglecting tenants? Can we really put a price tag on their suffering? It feels like a lot of money could be better spent on preventative measures instead of just fixing the problems after they've arisen.

And what about all those other tenants who aren't getting any compensation from A&E Real Estate? Is that not something to worry about? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm just saying, this settlement might be a step in the right direction, but it feels like we're still only addressing symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem.

OMG you guys 🀯 this is amazing news!!! I mean $2.1 million for 750 tenants who have been living in these crappy conditions? That's like a whole lotta dough πŸ’Έ But seriously though, it's about time someone held A&E Real Estate accountable for their neglect 😑. These tenants deserve so much better and it's awesome that Mayor Adams' admin is finally taking action. I'm all about DIY solutions but sometimes you gotta call in the pros 🀝 and it looks like this settlement is a major win for tenant rights! πŸ’ͺ

OMG, like can u even believe its finally happening?! 🀯 The city is getting that $2.1M settlement from A&E Real Estate and I'm literally shook πŸ˜‚. They've been neglecting their tenants for years and it's crazy how they got away with it for so long.

I feel bad for all the tenants who suffered because of their negligence, especially those at La Mesa Verde apartments who are still fighting for repairs πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And like, what's up with Douglas Eisenberg donating $125K to a super PAC supporting Andrew Cuomo? πŸ€‘ That's some shady stuff right there.

But seriously, this settlement is a major win for tenant rights and I'm so hyped πŸŽ‰. It's about time the city took action and held these landlords accountable. If A&E fails to comply with the terms of the settlement, they're gonna get some serious consequences πŸ”₯.

I'm kinda relieved this deal went down πŸ™Œ, but it's also super frustrating that it took a year-and-a-half for the city to take action. Like, shouldn't we be expecting more from our landlords already? πŸ’Έ 4,000 code violations is crazy, and I'm not surprised there are ongoing lawsuits from tenants who feel like their voices weren't heard. The fact that A&E's CEO framed it as a partnership with the city just feels like whitewashing to me πŸ™„. What really gets me is that they're still paying out $2.1 million but I'm guessing that doesn't even scratch the surface of the costs these tenants have incurred over the years πŸ’Έ.

I'm so glad to hear about this massive settlement in NYC πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ. It's amazing how a year-and-a-half-long battle led to $2.1 million being paid out to 750 tenants who've been living in neglectful conditions. I think the city is on the right track by holding landlords accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to tenant harassment. 🚨 The fact that Housing Commissioner Dina Levy is calling this a "sustained" enforcement effort is music to my ears - it's about time someone spoke up! 😊 The La Mesa Verde apartments lawsuit is still ongoing, but I hope this settlement sends a strong message that tenants' rights won't be ignored. 🀝

omg lol cant believe its been so long since aE real estate has finally agreed to do something about their shoddy buildings πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ  750 tenants deserve that $2.1 mil tho, it's the least they can get after suffering all these yrs of neglect πŸ’Έ meanwhile theres still ppl fighting A&E in court over la mesa verde apartments, hope they get some justice too πŸ‘€

πŸ€” 2.1 million bucks seems like a drop in the bucket for all those people who've been living in subpar conditions for years... πŸ€‘ I mean, what about the ones who can't afford lawyers to fight back against A&E? It's gonna take a lot more than just a nice chunk of cash to fix all these buildings. πŸ’Έ

I THINK IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE HITS A&E REAL ESTATE WHERE THEY'RE AT! $2.1 MILLION IS JUST A DROP IN THE BUCKET FOR A COMPANY THAT'S BEEN NEGLECTING ITS TENANTS FOR YEARS, BUT AT LEAST NOW THEY'LL HAVE TO TAKE ACTION πŸ€”. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MONEY, THOUGH - IT'S ABOUT MAKING SURE THESE BUILDINGS ARE SAFE AND LIVABLE FOR EVERYONE 🏠. I FEEL BAD FOR ALL THE TENANTS WHO HAD TO DEAL WITH CODE VIOLATIONS AND HARASSMENT, BUT AT LEAST THIS SETTLEMENT IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION πŸ’ͺ.

So I'm reading about this $2.1 million settlement between NYC and A&E Real Estate πŸ€‘, which basically means the largest landlord in the city has agreed to fix 14 buildings across 3 boroughs that have been neglected for years 😩. Now, on one hand, it's a huge win for tenant rights - safe and livable housing is an absolute right, you know? πŸ’― Housing Commissioner Dina Levy's all about enforcing those regulations and making sure tenants aren't being harassed or mistreated.

On the other hand, I'm still not convinced that A&E Real Estate is fully committed to changing their ways πŸ€”. I mean, they've got an ongoing lawsuit with dozens of tenants from one specific building who are still waiting for repairs after years of neglect. And what's up with the CEO and Executive Chair donating money to a super PAC supporting some former governor? It just feels like a PR stunt to me πŸ“’.

But hey, $2.1 million is still a lot of cash πŸ’Έ, and if it means that 750 tenants are finally getting the help they need, then I'm all for it 😊. Just hope A&E Real Estate follows through on their promises and doesn't just slap some Band-Aid solutions together πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

I mean, what's up with these huge settlements? It's like a big slap on the wrist for massive corporations that are just chillin' while people suffer. I'm not saying A&E didn't do anything wrong, but $2.1 million is a pretty penny... πŸ€‘

And it's wild that they framed this as a partnership with the city. Like, no one told you to make your tenants fix their own pipes and walls? πŸ˜‚ Housing Commissioner Dina Levy said safe, livable housing is an "absolute right" and I'm like, yaaas! But what about all the others who aren't getting justice?

It's also super shady that Douglas Eisenberg donated $125k to a super PAC supporting Andrew Cuomo. Is this just a coincidence or...? πŸ€” Anyway, hope these tenants get the help they need and that A&E is held accountable for their actions. Maybe this will be a turning point in tenant rights? πŸ‘

so i'm reading about this $2.1 million settlement between NYC and A&E Real Estate, the largest landlord in the city... πŸ€‘

i remember when i was living in queens, my grandma's building had all these code violations too - leaky pipes, broken elevators, you name it. we always complained to the landlord, but nothing ever got done. so to see a company like A&E finally being held accountable for neglecting their tenants is kinda sweet 😊

of course, there are still many other tenants who haven't gotten their repairs done yet... and now they're taking the landlord to court πŸ€”. as someone who's had to deal with crappy landlords before, i know how frustrating it can be. but this settlement is a good start πŸ’ͺ

idk about this $2.1 million settlement... like yeah it's a big deal for all those tenants but isn't it kinda weird that the company is paying only $2.1 mil when there are 4k+ code violations? shouldn't they be paying more considering how much harm they've caused? πŸ€” at the same time, i guess this does show that the city's been on top of things and they're fighting for tenant rights which is super important... but what about those tenants in La Mesa Verde apartments who are still waiting for repairs? shouldn't the city be doing more to help them out? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anyway, it's not like A&E was just ignoring all these issues or anything, they did have some warnings and stuff so i guess this is a step in the right direction... maybe

🀝 so its about time we see some action from our big landlords like A&E Real Estate. I mean, 4k code violations and tenant harassment is just not okay πŸš«πŸ’”. The $2.1 million settlement is definitely a good start, but what's gonna happen to the tenants who are still living in those buildings? We need more than just a slap on the wrist.

I'm glad the city is taking this seriously, though. It shows that they're committed to making sure everyone has safe and livable housing 🏠πŸ’ͺ. And yeah, A&E Real Estate's CEO framing it as a "partnership" might be a bit rich πŸ˜’. But hey, at least its not all bad news.

I just wish we could see more of these kinds of settlements happening across the city. It'd make a huge difference in people's lives. We need more empathy and understanding from our big business owners 🀝.

πŸ€” $2.1 million sounds like a drop in the bucket for someone making millions from rent hikes, if you ask me πŸ€‘. I mean, 750 tenants getting some kind of compensation is nice, but what about all the others who aren't getting the same treatment? πŸ’Έ

And let's not forget about the CEO's super PAC donation - does that really make him a "partner" with the city? πŸ™„ It feels like he's just greasing the wheels to get out of some fines. Maybe we should see some actual changes in those 14 buildings, not just a slap on the wrist.

I'm curious about what's going on at La Mesa Verde apartments - how many tenants have filed lawsuits and what kind of neglect are they talking about? 🀝 We need more info than just "systemic neglect" 😐.

omg $2.1 million is like a drop in the ocean for a company making millions like this πŸ€‘πŸ’ anyway i feel bad for those tenants who had to suffer for years because of A&E's negligence πŸ‘Ž it's about time someone held them accountable πŸ˜’ hope they actually fix those buildings and not just slap some paint on the walls πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€‘ I'm just gonna say it, but $2.1 million seems like a pretty small price to pay for fixing up 14 buildings that have been neglected for years... like, what's the real cost to those tenants who've suffered under A&E's negligence? That $125k donation from Douglas Eisenberg during the mayoral election is a red flag too - it feels like he was trying to grease some palms instead of focusing on fixing his own problems πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ. I'm not saying Mayor Zohran Mamdani or Housing Commissioner Dina Levy are being unreasonable, but it's gonna be tough for A&E to live up to these promises without some real consequences... like fines or even a change in leadership πŸ’”

idk why ppl r so quick 2 celebrate dis $2.1 mil settlement πŸ€‘ like it's gonna magically fix everythin' at those 14 buildings. newsflash: it's just a drop in the bucket 4 all the tenants who've been sufferin' 4 yrs under A&E's neglect πŸ˜”. anway, what's really interestin' is that this settlement comes w/ zero accountability for the people in charge πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. noone's gonna face consequences 4 their role in lettin' these buildings fall into disrepair πŸ‘€. & btw, $125k 2 a super PAC? πŸ€‘ that's just another way 4 A&E 2 keep its dirty hands clean 😏

Finally some good news! πŸ™Œ The city is finally taking action against big landlords like A&E Real Estate who just don't care about their tenants. $2.1 million might seem like a lot but it's actually peanuts compared to what these guys could be making if they were doing things right. I'm glad that the Housing Commissioner and Mayor Zohran Mamdani are cracking down on this stuff, it's about time! 🀬 The fact that there's still an ongoing lawsuit from tenants of La Mesa Verde apartments shows you that there's a lot more work to be done but at least we're moving in the right direction. 😊
