Light snow in NYC expected to usher in much more on Sunday

A light dusting of snow blanketed New York City on Saturday afternoon, casting a serene silence over the concrete jungle. While residents were treated to a brief winter wonderland in some neighborhoods, Meteorologist Jay Engle warned that a more substantial storm is brewing.

As the day winds down, areas north and northwest of the city can expect up to an inch of accumulation, with conditions clearing by late evening. However, Engle emphasized that this light dusting is merely a harbinger of things to come. On Sunday afternoon and evening, another powerful system will bring up to 4 inches of snow to the five boroughs, leaving temperatures plummeting.

For residents, it's essential to stay vigilant, as slick spots are expected and travel may become hazardous. The city has activated its Winter Weather Emergency Plan, with a travel advisory set to take effect on Sunday. If possible, residents are urged to plan ahead and avoid traveling altogether.

In preparation for the impending storm, the city is ramping up efforts by pre-treating roads and bridges with 700 salt spreaders that will be constantly deployed through Sunday. Plows stand at the ready, poised to tackle areas that may see more than two inches of snowfall.

The city has already issued a Code Blue weather alert, effective from 4 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, as outreach teams work to assist homeless residents in finding shelter. For those in need, residents can call 311 for assistance.

As the storm subsides, temperatures are expected to plummet even further, bringing some of the coldest air of the season – arriving on Monday and Tuesday.

🌨️ man I just got back from a random walk in Central Park yesterday afternoon and it was literally a winter wonderland 😍 snowflakes were falling gently everywhere and everyone was out having a blast ❄️ it's crazy how quickly the weather can turn around like that. I'm not sure if anyone is ready for this next storm tho... my neighbor just mentioned they're stocking up on supplies πŸ›οΈ gotta respect that preparation πŸ’―

🌨️ omg guys i'm so glad my kid got out of school early today πŸŽ“ because we were planning a snow day for sunday anyway lol. but seriously though, 4 inches of snow in nyc? that's crazy talk! 😱 i've lived here all my life and never thought i'd see the day where i'd be worried about driving to get milk πŸ₯›. please let it be just a dusting at first so we can all enjoy some winter magic ❄️ before things get too crazy. πŸ™

OMG u guys 4 inches of snow already?! 🌨️ I remember when blizzards used to be a big deal back in 2019 lol it was all about snowmageddon and stuff. now its just another day in NYC πŸ˜‚. i hope they can get the roads clear but with 700 salt spreaders, that's still gonna be a challenge πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. and what's up with the homeless alert? 🚨 seems like a lot of work for something that's probably gonna happen regardless. anywayz, make sure to bundle up on monday lol it's supposed to be COLD ❄️

just saw that nyc is getting snow 😊🌨️ i hope everyone's ready for the big storm comin' thru! 700 salt spreaders? thats a lotta work 🀣 gotta stay safe out there, especially for those who can't keep up with the travel advisory. 🚨 code blue weather alert? bless our outreach teams for helpin' those in need πŸ’• lets all just take a deep breath and ride this winter wonderland out 🌟

omg u gotta be prepared for this snowstorm!!! 🌨️ it's gonna be a big deal! i mean, i know it's not like we're gonna have to shovel our driveways or anything, but still... 4 inches of snow is a lot! πŸ˜… and the roads are gonna be super slippery. u should def check on ur neighbors who might need help finding shelter. they got this code blue thing goin' on which is so cool πŸ€“ but also kinda serious. i'm stockpilin some hot cocoa and snacks just in case i get snowed in! πŸ˜‹

😊 Just saw that NYC got a light dusting of snow this weekend 🌨️, but Meteorologist Jay Engle is warning us that things are about to get real cold ⬇️! Up to 4 inches of snow expected by Sunday afternoon, and it's gonna be a bummer for travelers. I'm not sure how they're managing with just 700 salt spreaders, but I guess it's better than nothing 🀞. The city is also doing their part to help out homeless folks find shelter, which is super thoughtful ❀️. Can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings... β„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ

This snow is like life's unexpected twists - it's a reminder to stay adaptable 🌨️. Just when you think things are calm, another challenge emerges. The city's preparing for this storm, just like we should prepare ourselves for life's ups and downs. Staying vigilant and planning ahead can make all the difference ⏰. It's also a good time to check in on those who might need an extra helping hand 🀝. We can't control the weather, but we can control how we respond to it. Let's take a cue from the city's proactive measures and be ready for whatever comes next πŸ’ͺ.

ugh I hate it when the weather gets all crazy like this 🌨️... one minute it's snowing lightly in some parts, next thing you know it's a full-blown blizzard 😬. can't even remember what my schedule looks like now because of the 311 call about homeless shelters - not that I don't appreciate them helping out, but seriously how do we live with this kinda stuff πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ?

Just had a look at that NYC weather forecast 🌨️... think the city is being super responsible with this Winter Weather Emergency Plan πŸ™. I mean, 700 salt spreaders? That's some serious prep work πŸ’ͺ! Plus, they're already reaching out to homeless folks for shelter 🌟. Can't say I blame 'em, gotta prioritize public safety first ❀️. Still kinda bummed about the snow tho... was really hoping for a break from winter ❄️

I'm like "yaaas snow is back in NY!!! πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ’¨" but also kinda worried about all the travel hazards... I mean who wants to drive around all that snowy mess? πŸš—πŸ˜© But at least they're preparing for it, 700 salt spreaders and plows on standby? That's a good move! 😊

ugh i hate waiting for the snow to start falling 🌨️... i was planning a hike in central park with friends this weekend but now it looks like we'll have to postpone till next week 😩. at least they're being super prepared though, 700 salt spreaders? that's some serious winter prep πŸ’ͺ. and poor homeless folks getting a Code Blue alert πŸ€•... gotta stay safe everyone! ❄️

OMG, like I'm so ready for a snow day 🌨️😍! But seriously, this is getting intense... 4 inches of snow? That's crazy! 🀯 I'm worried about all those homeless folks being affected by the Code Blue alert. 🀝 Can we please make sure they're all safe and sound?

I'm also not a fan of the sudden change in plans... just when you think it's going to be a normal weekend, BAM! Winter storm mode activated πŸ’₯. I hope everyone is prepared with warm clothes, food, and shelter. This is gonna be one wild ride! πŸŒͺ️ Bring on the hot chocolate β˜•οΈ and cozy vibes 😊

🌨️ I'm not surprised about this snowstorm, it's been looking pretty intense in the forecast all week... remember when we were talking about how weird the winter pattern has been? πŸ€” Anyway, I think the city is really on top of things with the salt spreaders and pre-treating roads. But have you thought about how this might affect all the outdoor events and festivals that are happening over the weekend? Some of my friends were planning to hit up a concert in Brooklyn... fingers crossed they'll get rescheduled πŸ˜‚
