Lord of the Flies review – Jack Thorne's take on the classic is nowhere near the original's power

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤔. On one hand, I love how they tried to humanize Piggy and show his vulnerabilities. David McKenna totally kills it in that role! 😊 But, on the other hand, the show's attempt to delve into character backstories feels like a distraction from the original story's power. It's like they're trying to make Lord of the Flies feel more "relatable" for modern audiences, but end up losing the essence of Golding's masterpiece in the process 🤷‍♂️. The visuals are definitely an interesting choice, but I'm not sure it adds anything new or impactful to the story... maybe it's just a cool-looking way to tell a familiar tale 😐.

Ugh, I'm so disappointed in this adaptation 🤕! I mean, who thought it was a good idea to focus on individual characters' backstories when Golding's genius lies in the way those characters come together to create a sense of chaos and anarchy? It's like they took all the depth and complexity out of the story and left us with a bunch of shallow, one-dimensional characters 🤦‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the visual style - I mean, what's wrong with good old-fashioned cinematography? The color palette is so over-the-top it feels like they're trying too hard to be artsy 😒. Overall, this adaptation is just a mess and fans of the original will want to give it a hard pass 👎.

I gotta say, I love how it's like Jack Thorne took all these themes and ideas from Golding's novel, but instead of exploring them in depth, he just kinda... glossed over 'em 🤷‍♂️. Like, what's up with that? The show's got some great visuals, don't get me wrong - those long shots of the island are super atmospheric - but at the end of the day, it feels like they're trying to distract us from how shallow the story really is 😐.

And can we talk about the dialogue for a sec? I mean, I know everyone's always saying that modern scripts need to be more "realistic" and all that jazz, but this stuff just comes across as forced and unnatural 🤔. It's like they're trying to explain away every character's motivations instead of letting them just... happen naturally or whatever.

But you know what? I kinda love that Piggy actor, David McKenna - he brings a lot of depth to the role, even if the rest of the cast is kinda meh 🤷‍♂️. Maybe they should've stuck with that approach instead of trying to overhaul the whole thing... idk, maybe it's just me being contradictor-y 😒
