Mamdani resists 'sweeps,' opens stalled NYC shelter as death toll in brutal cold climbs

I'm still thinking about this shelter opening... like, what's the plan after they fill up these 53 units? 🤔 They gotta have a way to help people find permanent housing, right? I mean, just having a place to sleep doesn't solve the problem. We need more than that. And those "sweeps" are still an issue... can't we find a better way to address homelessness without kicking people out on the streets? 💡 My friend's cousin lives in a shelter and it's like they're stuck in limbo, you know?

man this shelter opening is like a drop in the ocean right? 16 people have died already and it's just a temporary fix 🤕 we need to think about why these people are out on the streets in the first place, what's causing them homelessness? is it just a lack of affordable housing or something deeper? I'm not saying the city isn't trying, but this shelter thing feels like just treating the symptoms, not the disease. and what about all the people who can't get into shelters? don't they deserve some kind of help too? we need to be thinking about how to address the root causes of homelessness, not just piling on more temporary fixes 🤔

man this shelter is finally open 🙏 after all that waiting i feel bad for those homeless ppl having to live outside in freezing temps it's like they're literally fighting with nature every day no one should have to suffer like that ❤️ but at the same time we gotta talk about why shelters like this are even needed in the first place is it just a matter of not having enough affordable housing options or is there something deeper going on i feel like we're just glossing over the real issues here and instead focusing on quick fixes 🤔 anyway, i'm glad this shelter is finally up and running and hopefully it brings some warmth and comfort to those who need it most 😊

Ugh, about time, right? 🙄 I mean, 16 people dead from the cold? That's just crazy. It's like the city was waiting for someone to die before they'd spring into action. And now they're opening this shelter that's supposed to be a "safe haven"... let's see if it actually lives up to its name 🤔. I'm not buying the whole "sweeps" policy is necessary thing, sounds like just an excuse to get rid of people who are already vulnerable. And what about all the other shelters that don't have the same resources as this one? It feels like the city's just patching holes in a broken system instead of actually fixing it 🤦‍♀️.

man... 16 people already lost their lives to this cold snap 🥶 it's just not right. we need a shelter like this ASAP! i'm all about giving people a second chance at life, especially our homeless brothers & sisters 👫. the sweeps policy is outdated, imo. it just pushes ppl around without solving anything. we need more support, not less. what's 53 units gonna do, tho? that's like a drop in the bucket for the hundreds of ppl out there sleeping on the streets 🤯. lets hope this shelter makes a difference and inspires some real change ❤️
