Man City: Pep Guardiola called for Carabao Cup rule change to allow Marc Guehi to play in Wembley final - but EFL will turn down request

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his frustration over the EFL's rule that prohibits new signings from playing in cup finals, which has left Marc Guehi ineligible to play in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

The rule, implemented for the first time this season, states that a player signed after the first leg of the semi-final is not eligible to play in the remainder of the competition. However, Guardiola does not understand why this rule has been put in place and believes it would be fairer if Guehi were allowed to participate.

Guardiola has written a letter to the EFL appealing for Guehi's eligibility, stating that he hopes City will write to the league to plead his case. Despite this, the EFL is expected to turn down the request.

On the other hand, new signing Antoine Semenyo is eligible to play in the final after representing Bournemouth in their Carabao Cup second-round defeat to Brentford in August. Sky Sports pundit Shay Given believes that both players should be cup-tied or available for the final, and criticizes the inconsistent application of the rule.

Micah Richards adds that rules are rules, and while he understands Guardiola's frustrations, there is no way to change the current situation. Manchester City will face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final on March 22 at Wembley, live on Sky Sports.

Ugh I dont get why they gotta make it so complicated 🀯... like Guehi played for Bournemouth and then joined City, so hes basically a new signing right? But the rule says otherwise. It just feels unfair to him and City πŸ˜”. And Semenyo gets away with it because he made his debut before August but Guehi does not get the same treatment πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Its like theyre trying to be all strict and stuff, but its just a cup final πŸ†... can't they just relax the rules a bit?

I don’t usually comment but I think this rule is kinda unfair πŸ€”... like why does it matter if a new signing played for another team before? It's not like they're getting an edge by playing in the final or something πŸ™„... and Marc Guehi seems like a good player, you'd think he'd get a break 😐... but I guess that's how these things go when you're trying to make rules work on paper πŸ’Ό... it just feels like there should be more common sense involved here πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ...

I feel for Pep Guardiola, dude πŸ€• this rule just doesn't seem right... I mean, Marc Guehi is a new signing, but he's been with the team long enough to be considered a City player, right? It's all a bit confusing, and I can see why Guardiola would want him in the cup final. Antoine Semenyo getting a free pass into the final because he played for Bournemouth in the second round is just not fair, imo πŸ˜’... maybe the EFL should look at revising this rule?

What a load of rubbish from the EFL! 🀯 They're applying this rule for no reason and it's just gonna cause headaches like this. Guehi was already making a great impact with City and now he's being held back by some outdated rule. It's not fair to the players or the fans, I think they should just lift the ban or make an exception if both teams agree πŸ€”. Can't believe Sky Sports is just sitting there saying nothing about this πŸ™„

I don’t usually comment but... I feel for Pep Guardiola here. He's already dealing with so much pressure as a manager and then you tell him he can't use one of his new signings in the biggest cup final of the season? It just doesn't sit right. And yeah, Shay Given has a point about it being inconsistent, I mean if Antoine Semenyo got to play despite only having played for Bournemouth in August, why not Marc Guehi? πŸ€”πŸ‘€

I get why Pep's frustrated with this rule, but I can see both sides πŸ€”. It's a bit ridiculous that they're making an exception for Antoine Semenyo just 'cause he played in a different competition, though πŸ˜’. But at the same time, it is a bit harsh on Marc Guehi who didn't sign until later in the season πŸ™„.

I think the EFL should really look into this and clarify their rules a bit better. It's not like they're making some grand policy change, just tweaking an existing rule πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. But yeah, it would be great if Guehi could play in the final, but I guess that's just not gonna happen πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

Sky Sports pundit Shay Given is right to say there's inconsistency in how this rule is being applied, though πŸ‘. It's a shame Micah Richards doesn't think Pep can do anything about it 😐. Guess we'll just have to watch the final with Semenyo getting all the playing time πŸ’”

I feel bad for Pep Guardiola πŸ€•, I really do. He's like a coach who just wants his players to have a chance to shine, you know? But life isn't always fair βš–οΈ, and sometimes rules are made with good intentions but still end up being kinda harsh πŸ˜”. It makes me think about times in my own life when I felt frustrated or stuck, and how it's easy to get caught up in trying to change the situation rather than just rolling with the punches 🌊.

But you know what? Maybe this is a lesson for us all ⚑️ - sometimes we gotta accept that things aren't gonna go our way, but we can still find ways to make the most of it. And who knows, maybe Guehi will be the hero for City in the final and prove everyone wrong! 🀞

This new rule by the EFL seems kinda unfair...I mean, Marc Guehi was signed after the first leg of the semi-final but still deserves a chance to play in the final πŸ€”. It's not like he's getting a free pass or anything. And what's with Antoine Semenyo being eligible while Guehi isn't? πŸ˜’ It just doesn't make sense. I think the EFL should reconsider this rule and find a way to make it fairer for all players involved 🀞.

man this EFL rule is just a mess 🀯 I dont get why they cant just make an exception for Marc Guehi. its not like hes playing for himself, hes playing for Manchester City! 😩 and now Antoine Semenyo gets to play? what about fairness? πŸ˜” the rule seems super arbitrary and inconsistent... i mean shay given is right, why arent both players cup-tied? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it just feels like another example of the EFL prioritizing rules over common sense.

omg i cant believe pep guardiola is going through this 🀯 he deserves so much better from the efl πŸ™„ marc guethi should def be allowed to play in the carabao cup final against arsenal lol like what even is the point of this rule? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ shay given makes so much sense tho, it just looks like the efl is being super inconsistent with this one πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ i hope pep's letter gets through tho, fingers crossed for marc guethi πŸ˜…

I can imagine how frustrating this must be for Pep Guardiola & Marc Guehi πŸ€”πŸ˜©. I mean, it's not like they're trying to cheat or anything... they just wanna play the game as intended, right? πŸ’ͺ It's kinda weird that a rule like this even exists in the first place πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I feel for them & City fans who are probably super disappointed about this πŸ‘€.

πŸ€” so this rule thingy in the EFL is pretty confusing right? like pep guardiola's all frustrated about marc guehi not being able to play in the carabao cup final because of some new signing rule πŸ™„ and then you got antoine semenyo who gets a pass because he played for bournemouth in august like what's fair about that πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

and micah richards is all chill about it saying rules are rules but i think pep's right to be frustrated πŸ€” 'cause it feels like the efl is being super inconsistent with this rule and it's not cool for marc guehi who didn't sign until now πŸ’” anyway, gonna have to watch the game on march 22 and see how it all plays out ⚽️

idk why efl made dis rule lol it dont make sense 4 players like marc guΓ©hi who jus signed w/ man city & cant play in cup finals cus they signed after 1st leg of semi final πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ guess its just another one of those rules that makes no sence whatsoever πŸ˜’ anyway, pep guardiola should stil try 2 appeal 4 marcs inclusion 2 b fair πŸ™

lol what a ridiculous rule πŸ™„. I mean come on, if it's not fair for Marc Guehi then why is Antoine Semenyo allowed to play? It's like they're trying to create drama or something πŸ˜‚. And yeah, I can see both sides of the argument, but rules are rules, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Pep should just chill and accept that his new signing isn't eligible for the final. Meanwhile, I'm sure City fans will be all "oh no, our team is going to lose because of a silly rule πŸ’”". But hey, at least it's not boring 😊

πŸ€” I mean, come on... can't they just make an exception for this one? Marc Guehi's been with the team long enough and it's not like he's causing any harm to the competition πŸ™„. It just seems so unfair that Antoine Semenyo gets a free pass because he played for Bournemouth in a different tournament, but Guehi doesn't even get that kind of consideration? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I guess it's all about following the rules, but sometimes you gotta wonder if they've thought this through... πŸ˜’

The EFL has made this rule and now they're turning down Pep's plea for Marc Guehi? πŸ€” That doesn't sit right with me... Guehi played in the second-round game against Bournemouth before joining City, so he shouldn't be considered cup-tied just because of a technicality. I think it's time to re-examine this rule, maybe there are some gray areas that need to be looked at? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not fair to punish players for circumstances beyond their control...

omg dont get it whats the point of this rule?? like pep guardiola and micah richards r sayin its unfair 4 marc guehi but then semenyo gets a free pass cuz he was already out in august lol wembley cup final gonna b lit btw i think efl is just tryna make sure new signings dont disrupt teams rn

man... this EFL rule is just ridiculous πŸ˜’. can't believe they'd penalize a new signing like that. marc guhehi's been with manchester city for months now and still they're treating him like an outsider. what's the logic behind this rule, anyway? it seems like just another way to favor established players over fresh faces πŸ€”. and of course, the efl is gonna turn down pep's appeal, no surprise there... always something shady going on behind closed doors πŸ’Έ.

Ugh, this rule thingy 🀯 is just soooo unfair! I mean, what even is the point of having a cup competition if you can't let players who were signed after the initial phase compete? It's like they're saying "oh, you're too new, you don't deserve to play". πŸ™„ And it's not just Marc Guehi, Antoine Semenyo was eligible to play after his previous team got knocked out in the second round, but now he can't because of some arbitrary rule πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. It's like they're trying to create more drama and tension than necessary 🎭. I get that rules are rules, but come on EFL, can't you just make an exception for this one instance? 😊
