A Roslindale man has been handed a nearly 20-year prison sentence for his role in fatally shooting a Brighton man during the 2022 Caribbean Carnival in Boston. Tony Vance, 41, was convicted of manslaughter and possession of a loaded firearm without a license to carry after he opened fire on a crowd, killing 33-year-old Derrell Russell.
Vance's actions occurred on August 27, 2022, after an altercation with attendees at the carnival, which took place in Franklin Park. As Vance drove by the area of 970 Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester, he targeted Russell and shot him in the torso.
Russell was rushed to Boston Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Prosecutors stated that Russell's death was a result of Vance's reckless actions during what was supposed to be a celebratory event.
Vance's fiancรฉe gave an emotional victim impact statement, expressing her deep sadness and loss following Russell's passing. She stated that she would never get to meet or experience the love Russell had for their unborn child.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden condemned Vance's actions, calling it a devastating moment of violence during a celebration of community spirit. He emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence in Boston, stating that it has severe consequences, including lives lost and families torn apart.
Vance's lawyer declined to comment on the sentencing, but Vance was sentenced to 15-18 years in state prison for manslaughter, along with an additional four to five years for possession of a loaded firearm without a license to carry. He also received two years of probation.
