Megadeth: Megadeth review – conspiracy theories and combustible fingers on thrash metallers' curtain call

Megadeth's Swansong: Thrash Metal Legends Bring Curtain Call to Life

In a surprise move that sent shockwaves through the metal community, Megadeth, the pioneering thrash metal band fronted by Dave Mustaine, has announced its retirement from the music industry. The news came as a long goodbye, with an AI-assisted video and a statement that echoed classic grandstanding, with Mustaine equating his decision to quit with a global catastrophe ("some say this is the end of times") and suggesting that the US band "changed the world".

However, in a twist that suggests the farewell tour might just be the beginning, Mustaine revealed that the three-month farewell dates announced would be followed by a grueling schedule that will see Megadeth on the road for at least three to five years. This raises the prospect of the band bidding adieu to the world once again within the next decade.

Despite this unexpected turn of events, there's a palpable sense of finality to Megadeth's latest album, which serves as a career-summarising redux of their most iconic work. Tracks like Tipping Point, Made to Kill, and Let There Be Shred underline the band's position as thrash metal progenitors, with Mustaine's lyrics showcasing his signature blend of punkish leanings and melodic sensibilities.

The album also features songs rooted in Megadeth's more radio-friendly period in the mid-to-late 90s, including the standout track Puppet Parade. Contemporary guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari has joined forces to create music that embodies the band's technical precision.

However, not all is well in this swansong. The album's second half lags noticeably, with some tracks failing to live up to the standard set by their forebears. Mustaine's increasing crankiness and conspiracy-driven worldview are on full display in songs like Obey the Call, which reflects his growing fascination with ghostly puppetmasters controlling the world's evils.

In a bizarre move that has left fans scratching their heads, Megadeth also tackles Metallica's Ride the Lightning, an unexpected choice given its contentious history between Mustaine and Metallica. The decision to cover this classic track raises questions about whether it was included as a way to provoke reaction or simply because Mustaine couldn't resist one last dig at his old band.

Ultimately, Megadeth's farewell album will be remembered for its technical precision, iconic tracks, and Dave Mustaine's signature bombast – but also for the sense of inconsistency that has plagued the band's later releases.

I'm low-key bummed about Megadeth retiring 🤘. I mean, they're like the OGs of thrash metal, you know? And this last album is a pretty solid swan song, especially with tracks like Tipping Point and Puppet Parade 🎸. But, on the other hand, some of it feels a bit uneven, like they're still trying to figure out who they are as a band without Dave at the helm 💭.

And can we talk about Mustaine's lyrics for a sec? He's always been a bit...out there 😂, but this album takes it to a whole new level. Like, what's up with "Obey the Call"? It feels like he's trying too hard to be deep and meaningful 🤔.

But hey, I guess that's just part of why they're Megadeth – they're not afraid to take risks and stir things up 🔥. So even if this is their last bow, it'll still be a wild ride while it lasts 😎. Bring on the farewell tour!

🤔 I gotta say, I'm kinda surprised Megadeth is calling it quits, but not entirely shocked. Like, they've been hinting at a farewell tour for ages now 🎸. But honestly, can we talk about how over-the-top Mustaine's statements are getting? "This is the end of times" tho 😂. I mean, I get it, he's passionate, but c'mon Dave, you're not gonna go out with a 3-5 year farewell tour that sounds like a midlife crisis 🤦‍♂️. And what's up with the "some say this is the end of times" part? Sounds like something Mustaine would say on Twitter 😒.

I'm low-key kinda surprised they're doing this retirement thing 🤔... like I get it, Megadeth's been around for ages & all, but 3-5 years on the road is a pretty big commitment 🚗. Still, I do love how classic their latest album sounds - that Tipping Point track is straight fire 🔥! But also, gotta ask: what's with all the conspiracy vibes? Obey the Call feels like a weird detour from the thrash metal masterpieces we've come to expect 😒. And, bruh, covering Ride the Lightning was definitely not necessary 🙄... still, it is kinda interesting that they're doing this farewell tour thing. Maybe we'll see some epic shows & a chance for Mustaine to wrap up his legacy on his own terms 💥

idk what to think about this retirement announcement from Megadeth 🤷‍♂️. on one hand, it's cool that they're giving it up after all these years and leaving a legacy behind...but then again, 5 years is still pretty long for a farewell tour 🕰️. i mean, can't they just chill and enjoy their retirement like normal people? 😒 and what's with the conspiracy vibes on this album? mustaine's been going through some weird stuff lately and it's kinda jarring to hear him spout all that drama in his songs 🤣. but hey, at least the thrash metal community will have something to reminisce about 💀

idk what's more surprising Megadeth is actually gonna keep touring after this farewell announcement lol 🤣 those 3-5 year dates sound like a lot to me, almost like they're trying to make up for the impending doom or whatever 🌪️ anyway, i think their final album is pretty solid, especially the older tracks like Tipping Point and Made to Kill - that's what made them great in the first place 🤘 but some of the newer stuff feels a bit wonky, like Obey the Call is straight outta conspiracy land 🚫 don't get me wrong, it's still Megadeth, you know? 😉

omg u guys Megadeth is literally bringing back their farewell tour lol like 3-5 yrs on the road? thats so crazy!! i feel like they're just trolling us with this "retirement" announcement tho... idk bout me but im down for more shredding & sick riffs gotta see what teemu mansari brings to the table btw u think its gonna be a good cover of Ride the Lightning or is it just a publicity stunt lol

The news of Megadeth's retirement is kinda weird... like, they just announce it and then turn around and say we're not done yet? 🤔 I get that they wanna keep going, but after all these years, can't they just chill? It's like they're trying to make the world wait for another farewell tour. 😒 And with Mustaine being so extra about this whole thing... it's hard to take him seriously when he's all dramatic and whatnot.

But hey, the album is still pretty solid, even if some of it does feel a bit meh. I mean, "Tipping Point" and "Made to Kill" are straight fire 🔥, but then you've got tracks like "Obey the Call" that just feel like Mustaine's venting out his conspiracy theories 🤪. And covering Metallica's Ride the Lightning? That's just a bit petty... or is it? 😏 Maybe it's just a way for them to prove they can still bring the heat.

It's weird, though - sometimes I wonder if Megadeth is more than just a band - maybe it's like a cult following or something. They've been around for so long and have seen so much... do they really know when to quit? 🤷‍♂️ Guess we'll just have to keep listening to find out! 👍

i was just thinking about my grandma's garden the other day and how she always had these crazy-looking plants with weirdly shaped leaves 🌱🤔 i mean, have you ever seen a begonia that looks like it was sculpted by an artist? anyway, back to megadeth... i feel like they're doing this farewell tour thing because mustaine needs to get some rest for his ego 😂. all these years of yelling at people and making music about conspiracy theories can't be good for him.

I gotta say, this is gonna be one wild ride 🤯! 3-5 year farewell tour? That's like saying I'm gonna binge-watch my fave show for a week straight and then ask you if it's over 😂. The dude's got some serious stamina for a guy who's basically announcing his own demise.

And can we talk about the song choices? Puppet Parade is fire, but come on, Obey the Call? That one feels like a desperate attempt to cling to relevance 🙄. I get it, Mustaine's passionate about his views, but does he gotta shove them down our throats?

The fact that they're doing a farewell tour in the first place feels like a clever marketing ploy to me. We'll be eating out of their hands for the next three years, and who knows what other surprises await us? 🤔

I gotta say, this is a pretty wild move by Megadeth 🤯. One minute they're retiring, next they're gonna be on tour for years and years 🚗. I get it, Dave Mustaine wants to make an impact, but come on, the second half of the album is kinda meh 🤔. I mean, I love a good "I'm still right" anthem as much as the next guy, but some of this stuff just feels like him trying too hard to stir up drama 🔥. And that Metallica cover? Ugh, let's just say it's gonna be interesting to see how fans react to that one 😂. All in all, I'm both excited and skeptical about what Megadeth has in store for us next 🤷‍♂️.

I'm kinda bummed out when I heard Megadeth is retiring 😔. As a huge fan of thrash metal, it's hard to imagine a world without them. But at the same time, I gotta respect Dave Mustaine's dedication to his art - 5 years on the road? That's some serious commitment 💪! The fact that they're not going out with just one final album, but instead are planning a full-blown farewell tour, is pretty bold too. It's like they want to prove that this isn't the end, but just the beginning 🎸. Of course, there are some inconsistencies in the new album - I mean, come on Mustaine, can't you tone it down a notch? 😅 Still, Megadeth will always be one of my go-to bands for some serious face-melting solos and infectious riffs 🔊. Bring on the farewell tour! 👏

🤯 I'm thinking... so Megadeth's done, huh? Well, it's gonna take some time to get used to that 💔. I mean, I've been listening to them since their thrash metal days and they've always brought that high-energy vibe to the table 🤘. But at the same time, this farewell tour thingy seems like a bit of a cop-out after announcing it was going to be a retirement album... "we're gonna keep playing for three to five years" - sounds like a bunch of old guys trying to cling to the spotlight 🎸.

The new album's got its good moments, though. I love how they've still got that technical precision and iconic tracks like Tipping Point and Made to Kill 🔥. And Teemu Mäntysaari's addition is definitely a plus - he brings a fresh energy to the table 🌟. But on the flip side, some of these new songs feel like Mustaine is just going through the motions, you know? The second half of the album just kinda meanders along without any real cohesion or punch 💔.

And what's up with that Ride the Lightning cover? I get it, they want to stir the pot and all that... but come on, Dave! Can't you just leave Metallica alone for once 🤷‍♂️.

Wow 🤯 - I mean, what a way to go out! A long farewell tour followed by years more on the road? That's dedication, right? And still, some fans might be like "Is this for real?" after those last few albums were kinda meh... 😐 Still gonna miss Mustaine and Megadeth though - they helped shape thrash metal into what it is today! 💥

🤯 gotta say, I'm a bit meh about this swansong thing. I mean, 3-5 years on the road? sounds like a grueling schedule to me... might just make me wanna stay home and play some old Megadeth classics 🎸😒

I'm literally shaking my head right now 🤯 I mean, who comes back from retirement? Megadeth, apparently! 😂 Like, you gotta respect Dave Mustaine's dedication to his craft, but at this point, it feels like a never-ending cycle of farewell tours and comeback attempts. I remember when they first broke up all those years ago and we were all so sad 😔 Now, it's just...meh? 🤷‍♂️ And can we talk about how weird the cover of Ride the Lightning is?! Like, is this a troll or what?! 🙄 Anyway, gotta give props to Teemu Mäntysaari for stepping in and helping create some solid tracks. Let's hope they really do stick with it this time... 🤞

man i'm both hyped and disappointed at the same time about megadeth's retirement they've been a huge influence on me growing up with music and it's gonna be weird not seeing them live again, but at the same time i can respect their decision to keep going even after all these years 🤘💥 they're still one of the most technically skilled bands out there and it'll be interesting to see how long they can maintain that level of quality 🎸🔊
