Ministers can raise taxes if they come out fighting. But no one in this cowardly Labour government seems able | Aditya Chakrabortty

Britain's Labour government, now led by Keir Starmer, has one major problem: it can't argue. Or at least, not in the way that would be necessary to make its case for a massive tax rise and spending cuts package.

Starmer's team is "constitutionally incapable" of picking sides, making enemies or having disagreements - the very things that are supposed to happen when politicians try to sell their ideas to an electorate. Instead of being bold and confident in their policies, Labour ministers hide behind bland slogans ("Change") and production-line policy briefings.

When asked about how they plan to convince voters to accept £20-£30bn in tax rises and spending cuts, Starmer's team seemed uncertain. One member joked that workers had "voted for Boris", implying a sense of resigned acceptance rather than passionate advocacy.

This approach has left the public suspicious - and experts say it's about to become an even bigger problem. The government is preparing to unveil its next major budget in less than a month, with £20-£30bn worth of tax rises and spending cuts on the table. Yet Labour ministers are struggling to make their case.

There's a vacuum where they should be arguing for their policies - filling it instead with criticism of the media and other politicians who might disagree with them. This approach is not only damaging to Starmer's government but also threatens its very survival.

One senior figure in Labour has already predicted that Nigel Farage will "get a lot out of" this upcoming budget. The truth is, Labour needs to start arguing - and arguing strongly - if it wants to persuade voters that it's the right team for the job. Anything less risks being left out of power altogether.

lol what a joke starmer thinks he can just waltz in here with his boring policies and bland slogans 😴💤 and expect everyone to just trust him? newsflash keir: voters don't work that way 🙅‍♂️ you need to bring the heat, not just play it safe all the time 🔥 or else u'll be stuck in opposition forever 👀

Ugh, I'm so frustrated with Starmer's team 🙄. They need to step up their game and stop sounding like they're reading from a script 💼. A tax rise and spending cuts package is no joke, and they should be prepared to defend it passionately 🔥. Instead of hiding behind bland slogans, they need to get in front of the cameras and argue with conviction 💬. The public can smell their unease, and it's making them look weak 🤦‍♂️. We need more fire and less finger-pointing 👊. Can't they see that this is exactly why voters are skeptical? They need to start taking a stand and fighting for what they believe in 💪. Anything less is just a recipe for disaster ⚠️.

Ugh 🤯 they need to get their act together 💪 Starmer's team can't even debate themselves 🤔 is that how they became a gov? 😬 They're so scared of ruffling feathers 👀 that they just hide behind buzzwords 💼 "change" 😴 like that's gonna sell it 💸 my bet is the public will see right through this and stay away 🚫

🤔 I'm so over the lack of passion from Starmer's team! They're just phoning it in, you know? A £20-£30bn tax rise and spending cuts package is a big ask, but I want to see some fire under their bellies to convince me that Labour is the right choice. Instead of playing it safe, they should be owning the debate and passionately arguing for their policies. I mean, can't you just feel the excitement (or lack thereof) when watching Starmer's team discuss the budget? It's like they're reading from a script 📚, not having an actual conversation. The public is smart, we deserve better than bland slogans and PR talking points. Labour needs to step up their game if they want to win back voters' trust 🙏

lol what's up with Keir Starmer and his team? they can't even have a disagreement without everyone getting all bent outta shape 🤯♂️. it's like, come on guys, you're trying to sell your policies to the public, not get voted off the island 🏝️. their "change" slogan is soooo original... meanwhile, Boris got voted out and now they're just like "oh well, I guess we can't change after all" 😴♂️. this isn't how you build a political party, folks! they need to get some fire in their bellies 🔥 or else it's game over for them 👋.

🤔 so like, did you see that stat on the UK unemployment rate? 4.8% is still pretty high 📉 its been stuck in this range for ages 🕰️ and labour needs to prove they can get it down 👍 with these tax rises and spending cuts or else its gonna be game over for them 💸 the public already thinks they're just not being honest about how things will play out 🤷‍♀️ if they don't start arguing their case then who's gonna believe them? 🤔

Ugh, I'm so over this Labour government's lack of conviction 💔🙅‍♂️! They're all about "Change" but what does that even mean? 🤷‍♀️ It sounds like just a bunch of empty promises. And when it comes to making their case for these massive tax rises and spending cuts, they're as limp as a soggy noodle 🍜😴. I need to see some fire in their belly, you know? 💥

I'm not saying they should be petty or anything, but they do need to get a little salty about it 👊💁‍♀️. The Tories are already sharpening their knives, and Labour's just playing nice 🤝🏻...it's gonna be hard for them to win over the voters that way 😔.

And don't even get me started on Nigel Farage 🙄! I mean, who does he think he is? Talking trash about Labour like they're some kind of nobodies 😒. But you know what? If Labour can't argue their case, then maybe they shouldn't be arguing at all 🤷‍♂️.

It's time for Starmer to step up his game ⚡️ and show the public what he's working with 🔴🔵! No more bland slogans or boring briefings - give me some substance, man! 🍞

I'm low-key worried about Labour's strategy 🤔. They need to get their act together and show some backbone on this tax rise and spending cuts package. Instead, they're just playing it safe and hiding behind bland slogans. It's like they think the public is gonna magically understand their vision for the country without any pushback or debate 💡.

Newsflash: voters don't respond well to wishy-washy politics 🤷‍♂️. They want to see a clear vision, some passion, and a willingness to take risks. Labour's current approach is just not cutting it 📉. And if they can't argue their case effectively, then they might as well be stuck in neutral gear 🚗.

It's time for Labour to shake off this " Change" mantra and start making a real case for their policies 💪. Anything less, and they risk getting left behind by the opposition and the public's attention 📺.

🤔 I think Labour's problem is they're trying too hard not to ruffle any feathers 🙅‍♂️. Newsflash: you can't connect with people by playing it so safe! They need to take a deep breath, get their message across, and own the arguments for their policies 💬. All this "change" nonsense just won't cut it anymore 😒. If they don't start being bold and confident about their ideas, voters will see right through it 🔍. It's not going to be easy, but I think Labour needs a shake-up - both in terms of policy and personality 🔄. Anything less and they'll get stuck on the opposition bench forever 🚫!

🤯 I'm literally shaking about this 😱, can't believe Starmer's team can't even be bothered to debate their own policies 🙄! It's like they're waiting for someone else to fight on their behalf 🤦‍♂️, meanwhile the public is already getting fed up with 'Change' 🗣️. I mean, come on Keir, if you want to make your case for tax rises and spending cuts, don't be afraid to put yourself out there 💪! Stop playing it safe and let Labour ministers show some passion 💖! The UK needs strong leaders who aren't afraid to argue their point 🗣️, not some wishy-washy team that's just going through the motions 😴. Nigel Farage might be getting a lot of attention, but Starmer's got this 🤔... he just needs to step up and show us what he's made of 💪!

😒🤔 Britain's Labour government is having a major crisis! 🚨 They just can't seem to make their case for those big tax rises and spending cuts 📊💸. It's like they're stuck in neutral 🚗, unable to pick sides or argue passionately 💪. Their lack of confidence is making people suspicious 🤔.

I'm not surprised though 😐. Politicians have been hiding behind bland slogans ("Change") for too long 🙄. It's time for them to be bold and own their policies 🔥! The public wants to know what Labour stands for 💯, but instead they're just criticizing others 📰. This approach is a recipe for disaster ⚠️.

Labour needs to step up its game 💥! They need to start arguing strongly about why those tax rises and spending cuts are necessary 📢💼. Anything less means risking their seat at the table 🤦‍♂️. Come on, Labour! Show us what you're made of 🔥👊
