More than 11,000 flights canceled as major winter storm bears down across much of the US

Over 11,000 flights grounded as massive US winter storm intensifies

A behemoth of a winter storm is sweeping across the country, bringing with it treacherous conditions that have already forced thousands of travelers to cancel their plans. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for widespread heavy snow and catastrophic ice stretching from east Texas to North Carolina, leaving millions of people in its wake.

As the storm begins to take hold, flight after flight has been grounded, with over 11,000 cancellations announced so far. Airlines are scrambling to adapt to the rapidly changing situation, with many rescheduling flights for later in the day or week.

Oklahoma City's Will Rogers International Airport was particularly hard hit, with all Saturday flights canceled and Sunday morning flights also off the schedule. However, officials aim to restart service on Sunday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Transportation posted images of snow-covered highways north of Dallas, as ice and sleet made roads increasingly treacherous. In Mississippi, crews are working to keep up with reports of ice forming on roads and bridges in a third of the state's counties.

For some travelers, the storm is already having a profound impact on their plans. Chris Plank was set to drive from Little Rock to Dallas for work on Sunday, but he's now uncertain about making it due to fears of sleet-covered roads. "All of the power lines are above ground," Plank said, highlighting the risks posed by the storm.

Damage and power outages are expected to be significant, with forecasters warning that damage could rival that of a hurricane. As of Saturday morning, over 95,000 power outages had been reported across the country, with Texas and Virginia among the hardest hit.

Governors in more than a dozen states have sounded the alarm about the storm's trajectory, with some urging residents to stay home altogether. The National Weather Service is predicting that the storm will continue to move into the Northeast, bringing heavy snow and frigid temperatures with it.

As officials scramble to prepare for the worst, concerns are growing about the potential impact on infrastructure and daily life. "Ice is a whole different ballgame than snow," said Georgia's senior state meteorologist Will Lanxton. "It's much more likely to bring down power lines and trees."

In some areas, residents are bracing themselves for a prolonged period of cold temperatures and ice. The Midwest saw wind chills as low as minus 40 degrees on Saturday morning, while North Dakota's Bismarck was plunged into sub-zero temperatures, with winds so bitter that even those seeking shelter had to dress in layers.

As the storm continues to wreak havoc across the country, officials are preparing for a long and difficult clean-up effort. With over 4,000 flights canceled on Saturday alone, it's clear that this is one winter storm that will be remembered for weeks to come.

Ugh I feel bad for all those ppl stuck at airports ๐Ÿšซ, but 11k flights grounded seems kinda excessive? like can't airlines just fly a little slower or something? and what's with the power outages tho? didn't they prepare for this kinda storm? it's winter, for crying out loud! โ„๏ธ still, gotta give props to the folks in Texas & Virginia who are dealing with all that ice & snow ๐Ÿ™

omg u gotta feel 4 ppl like chris plank who's stuck in da middle of nowhere ๐Ÿคฏ sleet & ice r no joke! and i'm low-key worried bout da power outages too, texas & va are gonna get slammed ๐Ÿ’ฅ cant even imagine how cold it'll b in n Dakota -40 degrees?! โ„๏ธ brrr... just hope every1 stays safe n sound till da storm passes ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

its getting crazy out there ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿ’” flight cancellations are thru the roof and millions of ppl are stuck at home โฐ roads r treacherous and power lines r a mess ๐ŸŒŽ 95k+ power outages already reported and thats just the beginnin ๐Ÿ˜ฌ winds in the midwest are colder than a well diggern freezer โ„๏ธ minus 40 degrees is no joke ๐Ÿคฏ infrastructure cant handle this kinda storm โš ๏ธ clean up efforts are gonna be a long haul ๐Ÿ’”

omg, can you even imagine having to reschedule your whole flight schedule due to sleet? it's like they're saying "hey, let's cancel all your plans and start over"... but on a plane ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜‚. seriously though, 11k flights down the drain? that's some crazy weather, bro! hope everyone stays safe and cozy indoors while the storm rages on ๐Ÿ’คโ„๏ธ.

๐Ÿค” I'm so worried about all these people who are going to be stuck at home with no power or heat! ๐Ÿšจ Like Chris Plank said, the risks of sleet-covered roads are super scary. I hope everyone stays safe and warm over there... like, what's a good way to keep yourself entertained if you're stuck inside for days? โ˜€๏ธ Do people have those fancy indoor games like escape rooms or something? ๐ŸŽฎ And btw, I'm kinda curious why some states are saying "stay home" but others aren't? Is it just because they think the storm will pass faster? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Ugh I'm so worried about all these people stuck at airports ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜“ I mean yeah the weather forecast is pretty dire and we need to take precautions but 11k flights canceled? That's just crazy ๐Ÿ˜‚ some of these areas are literally freezing, minus 40 degrees?! That's like, totally insane โ„๏ธ I feel for Chris Plank who was supposed to drive to Dallas and now he's not sure if he can make it due to sleet covered roads ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ˜ฌ What's with the power outages too? Is everyone just sitting around waiting for the storm to pass or are they doing something to stay safe? Just curious about how people are handling this situation ๐Ÿ˜Š

Umm what if ppl were stuck at home 2 much cuz of dis storm?? like how can they even work or do anything?? all the flights are cancelled and ppl cant even travel to meet up with family or friends... its going 2 b a long time before things go back 2 normal ๐Ÿค”๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ i mean like who needs this kinda weather in the middle of january already feeling anxious about those cancellations and power outages... hope everyone stays safe out there โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฌ my heart goes out to all those people stuck in traffic or freezing their butts off ๐Ÿ’–

This massive US winter storm is having far-reaching consequences ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ, with millions of people feeling the pinch โ„๏ธ. The sheer scale of the disruption is staggering, with over 11,000 flights grounded and widespread heavy snow and catastrophic ice reported across multiple states โ›”๏ธ. While it's no surprise that airlines are scrambling to adapt to the rapidly changing situation, the impact on daily life for many travelers will be significant ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. The fact that officials are warning of potential damage rivaling that of a hurricane is a sobering reminder of the storm's potency โ›ˆ๏ธ. As we wait for the storm to pass, concerns about infrastructure and power outages will remain at the forefront of everyone's mind ๐Ÿค”.

omg i can imagine how scary it must be for ppl stuck in airports with no flights ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜“ and the pics of snow-covered highways are giving me the chills โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ˜จ it's crazy how fast the situation is changing, airlines gotta be like super flexible right now ๐Ÿคฏ and what's up with those power outages tho? 95k+ already?! ๐Ÿ’ฅ i hope everyone stays safe & warm through this ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ”ฅ

I'm so glad I'm safe indoors right now ๐Ÿค’ but at the same time, I feel terrible for all those people who are struggling to get around because of the weather โ˜ƒ๏ธ. Like, how can 11,000 flights be cancelled at once? That's just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ, and I also think it's kinda awesome that airlines are trying so hard to adapt to the situation ๐Ÿ™Œ.

I'm not really sure if I should be worried about the power outages or not โšก๏ธ. On one hand, 95,000 reported power outages is a lot and I hope everyone stays safe and warm ๐Ÿ’ก. But on the other hand, I saw some videos of people having snowball fights in Texas and that just made me giggle ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I guess what really gets to me is how harsh the weather is going to be ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. Ice is like a whole different monster than snow, Will Lanxton said and I think he's totally right โ„๏ธ. But at the same time, I kinda love the winter weather in general โ„๏ธโค๏ธ.

Overall, I'm just gonna stay inside and drink hot chocolate while the storm rages on outside โ˜•๏ธ. It sounds like a real challenge for everyone outside ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

I'm so stressed right now thinking about all these flights grounded ๐Ÿ›ซ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I was supposed to fly to Chicago next week for a school trip and I don't know if they're gonna get the weather under control yet โ„๏ธ๐Ÿคž The worst part is, some people are stuck on roads with sleet-covered highways, it's like a scene from a horror movie ๐Ÿ˜จ what if someone gets hurt? ๐Ÿš‘๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

Ugh, I'm so tired of all these crazy winter storms! ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the nostalgia of watching old snow day videos from back in the day... but nowadays it's just a total pain to deal with! ๐Ÿ˜’ Like, I got my flights grounded for Sunday and I'm stuck at home with nothing to do. But you know what? At least I can play some old-school video games while I wait ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ‘.

And, omg, the power outages are insane! ๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’ฅ I feel bad for all those people who lost their electricity. Like, I got my smart home system shut down and I'm stuck with a bunch of useless devices ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I do have to say though, it's kinda cool that everyone's taking the storm so seriously. โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ The meteorologists are being super responsible and warning people about the dangers of ice and snow... but also, can we please just enjoy the moment?! ๐Ÿ˜Š It's not like we're going to die from a little cold weather or something...

Anywayz, I guess it's just one of those things we gotta deal with. So, I'll just curl up with some hot cocoa and watch some old movies while the storm rages on outside... โ„๏ธโ˜•๏ธ

Ugh, I'm so annoyed when flights get grounded like this! ๐Ÿค• I had plans to visit my family in the Midwest but now I don't know if they'll even have power ๐Ÿ˜“. It's crazy how fast the weather can change, especially with all the ice and sleet around. The idea that it could bring down power lines and trees is really scary ๐Ÿ’ฅ. And 95k+ power outages already? That's a lot of people stuck at home without heat or electricity โšก๏ธ. I hope everyone stays safe and warm during this crazy storm โ„๏ธ!

man... so many flights grounded ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ฉ i feel bad for people who have to deal with this crazy weather every year... winters are the worst in the us, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it feels like it's too much ๐Ÿ˜’ at least the airport staff is doing their thing rescheduling flights and whatnot... hope everyone stays safe out there โ„๏ธ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

omg y'all ๐Ÿคฏ this snowstorm is looking so bad ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i'm actually glad i don't have any big plans today ๐Ÿ™ hopefully everyone stays safe and warm โ˜•๏ธ 11k flights grounded? that's just crazy talk ๐Ÿšซ a lot of people are gonna be stuck at airports or driving around in the snow โ„๏ธ #snowstorm #winterweather #travelnightmare

I'm not surprised by all these flight cancellations ๐Ÿšซ... I mean, the weather forecast was pretty dire ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. But 11,000? That's a lot! I hope everyone gets home safely and that the roads clear up soon. The damage is definitely going to be significant, especially with those power outages ๐ŸŒก๏ธ. It's one thing to experience cold temperatures in the Midwest or North Dakota, but when it affects multiple states like this... yikes โ„๏ธ. And what's worrying me most is the impact on infrastructure - I can only imagine how hard it'll be for people to get around once everything is back online ๐Ÿšง.
