More than 20 taken to hospital after Melbourne carbon monoxide leak – as it happened

More than 20 people were taken to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a Melbourne pork processing plant on Monday. The incident occurred around 12:45pm and paramedics assessed patients on the scene before transporting them to four nearby hospitals. All patients were reported to be in stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) arrived at the scene to provide oxygen to those needing assistance until ambulance teams could arrive. The leak was caused by meat preservation machinery inside the factory, and FRV ventilated the facility once safe levels of carbon monoxide were reached.

The incident highlights the risks associated with working in factories that use hazardous equipment. Occupational health and safety experts have long warned about the dangers of carbon monoxide exposure, particularly in enclosed spaces.

No one was reported to have died as a result of the leak, but 24 people required medical treatment. The incident is under investigation by workplace safety authorities.

In other news, a major overhaul of Australia's defence department has been announced, with the creation of a new defence delivery agency aimed at streamlining procurement and improving efficiency.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has warned that urgent investment is needed in new energy infrastructure if the Eraring coal power plant is to shut as planned in 2027.

In Tasmania, thousands of people gathered in Hobart to protest against a proposed AFL stadium, which they say would be a costly and unnecessary project. The protesters, who wore black to symbolize their opposition, held signs that read "No stadium" and "Close the Gap".

A woman in her 20s has been killed in a dog attack in Western Australia's north-east. WA police confirmed that the victim was found dead at the scene, and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The medicines regulator has added two new safety warnings around mental health and contraception for people taking high-profile diabetes and weight loss drugs. The warnings apply to medicines such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, which have been linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

😊 just another day in melbourne, right? i mean, 24 ppl taken to hospital due to carbon monoxide leak at a factory is pretty alarming... but on the bright side, it's a good reminder for factories to get their equipment checked regularly 🤞 and for us as consumers to support companies that prioritize worker safety. 💼 anyway, moving on from the factory incident, sounds like there's some big changes coming to australia's defence department - gotta hope they can make it work seamlessly 🤔 and btw, a new energy agency is needed ASAP since eraring coal power plant might shut down soon 🌞💚

🤯 Carbon monoxide leaks in factories is crazy! Did you know that CO exposure can cause permanent brain damage? 🚨 1 in 5 people who die from CO poisoning don't even show symptoms until it's too late 😱. 24 people needed medical treatment, but thankfully no one died... yet. We gotta prioritize workplace safety and invest in better equipment to prevent these types of incidents! 💸

By the way, have you seen this graph on CO poisoning rates? 📊 It shows a massive spike in cases in Australia over the past 5 years... we need more research and regulations to keep our workers safe!

And what's with all these energy infrastructure warnings? 🤔 AEMO says we need $10 billion in new investment by 2027 or Eraring coal plant will shut down. That's a lot of cash! 💸 What are your thoughts on this planned shutdown?

Oh, and I saw that Hobart protest against the AFL stadium... 🎯 Thousands showed up to say no to this costly project. Let's keep our priorities straight! We should be investing in our communities and people, not fancy stadiums!

Last but not least, mental health and contraception warnings for diabetes meds? 🤔 This is concerning stuff. The numbers on suicidal thoughts and behaviors are alarming... we need to keep a close eye on this!

I'm telling you, this pork processing plant incident is more than just a workplace accident 🤔. Think about it, 24 people hospitalized from carbon monoxide poisoning in one place? That's not a coincidence, that's a setup 🔍. And what about the fire department showing up right away? Conveniently arriving with oxygen tanks to "help"... what if they were there for more than just medical assistance? 😒 What if they were part of some bigger operation to cover up something? I'm not saying it's definitely a conspiracy, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it. And don't even get me started on the AFL stadium protests in Tasmania... that's some interesting symbolism going on with those black clothes and signs 🤷‍♀️. Something fishy is always lurking beneath the surface, you just gotta know where to look 🔎.

Ugh man I'm still shaking thinking about that Melbourne factory leak 🤢 20+ people taken to hospital is way too many. Carbon monoxide poisoning is super sneaky and can be deadly if you don't catch it early... gotta make sure factories prioritize worker safety 🚧💡

🤦‍♂️ I mean, what a mess, right? Like, seriously, can't these factories take basic safety precautions?! I'm all for worker's rights and stuff, but come on! A carbon monoxide leak is not rocket science, folks. You'd think they'd have better training and equipment in place to prevent something like this from happening. And now 24 people are in the hospital? That's just irresponsible. 👎

omg what's the deal with carbon monoxide leaks at factories 🤯 is that like super common or something? i mean i know it's bad news when people get sick but... how do you prevent these things from happening in the first place?

and btw have you guys heard about the new defence delivery agency? sounds kinda cool, but also a bit scary to think about all our defence plans being in one place 🤔

so anyway back to carbon monoxide leaks... is that something you can smell or is it like invisible? and how do you know when it's too bad to be around?

also what's with the protests in Hobart? i get why people wouldn't want a stadium, but... couldn't they just, like, talk about it instead of getting all upset? 🤷‍♀️

ugh, carbon monoxide leaks are like the worst thing ever 🤯. it's so crazy that all those people got sick just because some machinery malfunctioned. i mean, we need to prioritize our health and safety in factories, esp since they use stuff that can cause harm. it's good that no one died, but 24 people getting medical treatment is still a lot 😟.

😞 just saw that 24 ppl were rushed to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a Melbourne factory 🤯 can't believe it's still happening and no one's dying... but think about all the ppl who are lucky to be alive 💨 safety protocols need to be seriously reviewed ASAP 💼 especially in factories with hazardous equipment like that meat preservation machinery 🍖️ we need to protect our workers' health & wellbeing first 💕

🚨💡 I'm so worried about all these factory incidents! 🤕 Like, what's going on with our workplaces? We need better safety measures in place ASAP ⏰. I was thinking, we could draw a diagram like this:

+---------------+
| Workplace |
| Safety Measures |
+---------------+
|
| Risk Assessment
v
+---------------+ +---------------+
| Hazard | | Control |
| Identification| | Mitigation |
+---------------+ +---------------+

And for carbon monoxide leaks, we need to be more vigilant! 🔍 It's crazy that people are still getting exposed in factories. We should also be monitoring our energy infrastructure 🌞.

And omg, the AFL stadium protests in Tasmania were so powerful 💪. Thousands of people came together to make their voices heard 👊. I'm all for it!

But seriously, we need to talk about mental health and safety warnings around those diabetes meds 🤯. We can't afford to ignore these risks ⚠️.

I hope they get the new defence agency up and running soon 💼. And let's not forget about the Eraring coal power plant - we need new energy infrastructure now! 🔌

OMG, like, 24 ppl got taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a Melbourne factory 🤯♂️...that's super scary! Factory workers should be prioritized with safety measures, especially when it comes to hazardous equipment 🚨♀️. I mean, occupational health and safety experts have been saying this for ages, so it's not like it was a surprise leak or anything...it just goes to show how important it is to listen to these experts 💡.

It's also crazy that some ppl are protesting against an AFL stadium in Tasmania 🤔...I guess if ppl are really concerned about the cost and necessity of it, they should try talking to the authorities and finding solutions instead of being all dramatic about it 😒.

And btw, what's with all these news stories about energy infrastructure and coal power plants? Like, can't we just switch to renewable energy already?! 🌞

Wow 😱 24 people getting sick from carbon monoxide leak is crazy, factories gotta be safer! Interesting how occupational health and safety experts warned about these dangers years ago 🙏

I'm really concerned about the carbon monoxide leak at that Melbourne pork processing plant 🤕😷...all 24 people who got sick could've had much worse outcomes if they didn't get medical attention so quickly. I mean, factories with hazardous equipment are a ticking time bomb just waiting to happen. We need better safety protocols in place and more rigorous inspections to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

The new defence delivery agency is an interesting move 🤔...streamlining procurement and improving efficiency could save the country some serious cash. But, we need to make sure it doesn't compromise national security or our military capabilities in any way.

And, I'm with those Tasmanians who are protesting against that proposed AFL stadium 🏟️😒...it's a costly and unnecessary project that could've been avoided if the government had just listened to community concerns earlier on.

man this carbon monoxide leak thing is crazy how many ppl got taken to the hospital I was talking to my mate who works in factories and he's always saying about the dangers of working with machinery but u never think it's gonna happen to someone u know 🤯, 24 people lucky they made it out alive tho, hope everyone recovers soon 🙏

🤦‍♂️ I don't know... I mean, 24 people got really sick from a carbon monoxide leak at a factory, but like, isn't that what we're supposed to do when there's a leak? Get outta dodge? 😒 But then again, maybe factories should be doing more to prevent these kinds of things from happening in the first place. Like, what if they had better ventilation systems or something? 🤔

And on the other hand, I'm all for efficiency and streamlining procurement, but like, isn't that just going to benefit the people at the top who are already making a lot of money? It seems like we're trading one problem for another. 🤑 Plus, what about the people who lose their jobs when factories get "streamlined"? That's not exactly a guarantee of a brighter future... 🤷‍♂️

But hey, at least the medicines regulator is looking out for us by adding safety warnings to some popular diabetes and weight loss drugs. That's definitely something to be grateful for... unless you're one of the people who takes those meds and is worried about getting sick. Then you might not be so sure... 🤕
