Mother of Flies review – horror in the woods as house guests are microdosed with psychedelics

"Mother of Flies" Delivers Unsettling Experience as Family Guests are Microdosed with Psychedelics

A new offering from the enigmatic directorial duo behind the "Adams-Poser" family, "Mother of Flies" is a low-budget thriller-horror that effectively generates scares while showcasing striking visuals. The film follows college student Mickey Adams, who receives an ominous summons to meet with Solveig, a mysterious woman with maternal instincts towards the protagonist's every move. Accompanied by her widowed father, Jake, they settle into Solveig's eccentric forest dwelling, where she microdoses her guests with psychedelics.

As the story unfolds, the atmospheric tension builds up over the first 45 minutes, oscillating between Mickey and Jake's reactions to Solveig's bizarre hospitality and visions of rotting corpses and stillborn babies. The latter are eerily populated by fake blood and solemn-faced supporting players, many of whom share the same surname as the Adams-Poser family.

While the film effectively delivers an unsettling experience, it also relies on repetitive sequences where Solveig intones what sounds like poor parodies of Emily Dickinson poetry, padding out the action. Despite this, "Mother of Flies" surpasses some of its earlier efforts in terms of quality and cohesion, showcasing a more refined vision from the directors.

The standout aspect of the film is its effective use of psychedelics to create an unnerving atmosphere. The microdosing sequences add a layer of psychological complexity to Mickey's journey, making her vulnerability all the more palpable. As she navigates Solveig's world, Mickey must confront her own mortality and the true nature of Solveig's intentions.

"Mother of Flies" is not for the faint of heart, but those willing to venture into its twisted world will be rewarded with a thought-provoking horror experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

I'm low-key impressed by this flick, but at the same time, I'm all over it for relying on psychedelic vibes to create tension lol 🤯🌿. Like, who needs actual scares when you can just mess with your audience's perception of reality? 😏 The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that's what the directors were going for – some sort of commentary on how our perceptions shape us, right? 👀 I mean, the Emily Dickinson poetry thing might've been a bit of a stretch, but overall, I think they nailed the unsettling experience vibe 🎃. Still, I'd love to see them push the boundaries even further next time around... maybe some experimental storytelling or something 🔥👽

I don't usually comment on super dark movies but I just watched "Mother of Flies" and it's really messed with my head 🤯... I mean, who creates a movie where people are microdosed with psychedelics and forced to deal with some crazy chick? 😂 It's not like that's not disturbing at all. But seriously, the visuals were insane and the whole atmosphere was so tense. I don't know if it's just me but I could've done without the cheesy Emily Dickinson poetry parts though 🙄... still, it's a solid horror movie that'll keep you on edge till the end 💀

I just saw this movie last night and I'm still shaking my head lol, I mean, I've seen some weird stuff in my life but this mom's vibes are on a whole other level 🤯...I was like what is going on with Solveig's poetry recitations though, it felt so forced...but the part where Mickey gets microdosed and sees all those fake corpses was straight fire 🔥🔪...and can we talk about how Jake just rolls with it like a total simp? I mean, I would have been like "what is wrong with you?" 😂...anyway, I'm still trying to process everything that happened in this movie and I'm not even mad about the weirdness 🤣

omg i just watched this film and i'm still trying to process it 🤯...i mean, it's like they're pushing boundaries of what's acceptable in a horror movie, but at the same time its kinda fascinating how they've managed to create this sense of unease without actually showing too much. the psychedelic sequences are super unsettling, especially when you're not expecting them 😳...anyway, i think the film is saying something about motherhood and control, but it's open to interpretation which is part of what makes it so thought-provoking. overall, i'd say its a must-see for horror fans, but be prepared for a wild ride 🎢

I just watched "Mother of Flies" over the weekend and I gotta say, it was super unsettling 😱. The way they used psychedelics in the film was like something out of a bad dream... literally! As someone who's already nervous about exams in May, seeing Mickey get microdosed with those stuff had me on edge 🤯. But at the same time, I felt kinda bad for her - it's like, what kind of person does that to their guest? 😳 The atmosphere in the forest dwelling was super creepy too... I half expected Solveig to pop out from behind a tree and give me a lecture about the importance of completing my English essay 📚. Overall, I'd say "Mother of Flies" is not for kids (or freshmen), but if you're an older student looking for a thrill, it might be worth checking out 😅.

omg I just watched this movie with my friends and it was literally so unsettling 😱! I mean, I love a good thrill ride as much as the next person but this one was on another level 🤯. The way they used those psychedelics to create an atmosphere was straight up genius 💥. And can we talk about how messed up Solveig's dad is? Like, what kind of sicko gives their daughter the right to microdose strangers with psychedelics? 🤪

But for real though, I'm still thinking about that ending and I don't think I've fully processed it yet 🤯. I'm gonna have to rewatch it like 5 more times to get it all out of my system 📺. Has anyone else seen this movie? What did you guys think? 🤔

OMG, just watched "Mother of Flies" 🕷️, totally freaked me out! The microdosing scenes are seriously unsettling 😳, love how it adds to the psychological tension. But, gotta say, those cheesy poetry lines 📚 need some serious editing 💁‍♀️. Still, a solid horror flick 👻 if you're feeling brave 💥

I gotta say, I was on edge while watching this one 😱👻. The whole microdosing thing just adds an extra layer of unease, you know? It's like they're playing with fire and everyone gets burned 🔥💀. But at the same time, it's also kinda fascinating to see how far they took that concept 🤯. I mean, those visuals are straight outta a fever dream 😳...I'm still trying to process everything after watching this movie 📺💭

omg i just saw this movie and it was soooo weird 🤯 i mean i'm still trying to process what happened at the end lol anyway back to the movie... i love how they used psychedelics to make everything feel super trippy and unsettling 😂 i felt like i was right there with mickey, you know? but ugh, those poetry parts were kinda cringeworthy 🙄 can someone explain to me what emily dickinson's poems are even about tho?
