Nature boys and girls – here's your chance to get published in the Guardian

Young Country Diary Writers Sought for Latest Issue

The Guardian is now accepting submissions from children aged 8-14 to write about their recent encounters with nature. The Young Country Diary series, which runs every three months, aims to inspire a love of the natural world in young people and encourage them to develop their writing skills.

To get involved, simply step out into nature – whether it's your local woods, beach, or garden – and observe what you see, hear, smell, touch, and feel. Take notes as you go and think about how you can describe what happened in 200-250 words.

As a parent or guardian, you'll need to complete the submission form on behalf of your child. The deadline for winter submissions is noon on Monday, February 2nd, and four successful entries will be published in the newspaper and online – two in January and two in February.

If you're struggling to get started, here are a few tips from experienced YCD writers: pay attention to your senses, note down any interesting details, and think about how your encounter with nature has made you feel.

Recent winners of the Young Country Diary series have shared their stories, including an 11-year-old who discovered a fairytale fungus and an eight-year-old who spotted a rare bird. This is your chance to share your own nature-inspired writing with the world – don't miss out!

To get started, simply complete the submission form by Sunday, February 2nd, at 10pm. The Guardian will then contact you as the parent or guardian of the successful entrant and pay them on their behalf.

Good luck, and we look forward to reading your child's nature-inspired writing!

I'm so over these school essays and exams... can't they just let kids be kids and have some fun in nature already?! 🌳🎉 It's great that The Guardian is doing this but come on, 200-250 words? That's like trying to write a novel in one sitting! Give the kids some space and let them run with it. And what's with the deadline? Can't we just enjoy the process of writing without the pressure of a specific date? 🤷‍♀️

OMG, this is such a great idea!!! I'm sure so many kids would love to share their amazing adventures in nature with others! 🌳📝 It's like, the perfect way for them to express themselves and develop their writing skills at the same time. And who knows, maybe one of our young diarists will discover something new and exciting that'll inspire others too! 😃 Like, can you imagine reading about a rare bird sighting or a magical fungus discovery? Mind blown, right?! 🤯 Anyway, I'm super excited to see what all the kids come up with this winter. Good luck to everyone who submits their entries! 💪

omg i'm so down for this!!! i remember last year when my class went on a field trip to the woods and we got to write about it in our journals... it was so much fun! 🌳📝 i think its so cool that they're looking for new writers, esp kids who are 8-14 yrs old. thats like me!!! i would totes submit an entry, maybe something about a bird i saw at my backyard last week? or a time when i went on a hike and saw a waterfall 🌊🏞️ can you imagine getting published in the guardian?!

🌿 I'm all for encouraging kids to get out there and appreciate Mother Nature, but let's not pretend like this is just a feel-good exercise. This is an opportunity for the government to show some support for STEM education and getting kids outdoors in a meaningful way. The fact that we need to rely on private publications like The Guardian to make it happen is a bit of a red flag.

And have you thought about the environmental impact of all these submissions? Will they be sending those papers somewhere? It's not just about writing, folks – it's about reducing waste and living sustainably. Maybe instead of a newspaper publication, they should be going digital. The times are changing, and we need to adapt our thinking.

Oh, and one more thing: what about representation? Are they looking for kids from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences? If not, that's another problem altogether... 🤔

I just love this idea 🌿💫, getting kids to write about their time in nature is such a great way to encourage them to appreciate the world around us. My niece did something similar last summer and wrote an amazing story about the bees she met in her garden, it was so well done! 😊

I'm loving this initiative 🌿💚! It's amazing that The Guardian is encouraging kids to get outside and explore the natural world. I think it's so important for our young people to develop a love of nature and learn about the importance of conservation. The fact that they're offering tips from experienced writers to help them get started is brilliant 😊.

I'm also excited to see the stories that will be shared – who knows what amazing discoveries or insights kids will have? And it's great that the winning entries will be published in the paper and online, so even more people can read and enjoy them 📰.

omg i just got back from this sick hike with my kiddo in the woods 🌳🏞️ and i am totally inspired to submit a diary entry for this contest!!! i'm 38 btw 😂 so yeah, i know what you're thinking... how is she doing this? but seriously, it's been ages since i've written something that doesn't involve my cat or last night's pizza 🍕🐱. anyway, i did notice these gorgeous wildflowers and the sound of the river was literally soothing my soul 🌸🌊. i'm hoping to get in this time because my little one is so into it too - she loves exploring and always has her nose buried in a book about animals 📚🦊. fingers crossed we make the cut!!! 😅

omg i think its so awesome that The Guardian is doing this 🤩 - encouraging kids to get out into nature and express themselves through writing. its like, the more we can inspire young minds to appreciate the world around them, the better off were gonna be 😊. and who knows, maybe one of those lucky 4 winners will go on to become a famous naturalist or writer! 🌿📚

I'm so down for this, reminds me of when I used to write in my journal back in elementary school 📝. You know how it is when you're out playing in the park or exploring the woods and you just wanna jot down everything that's happening? That's what they want from these kids! It's a great way to encourage 'em to get outside and enjoy nature, you know?

I love that recent winners have been sharing their stories and it's like... oh man, I remember when I was about 8 and we went on this amazing hike in the mountains and I saw this squirrel up a tree... 🐿️. My journal entry was all about how amazed I was by its agility! Nowadays, kids are so glued to their screens, this is just what they need – some fresh air and a chance to express themselves.

It's also super cool that The Guardian is doing this – my old teachers used to write these amazing essays in the school newspaper... 📰. Anyway, if you've got a mini-me who loves writing about nature, get 'em started! It'll be fun for both of you, I promise 😊.

idk why they gotta wait till Feb 2nd tho 🤔... like, what if u see something cool outside today? 🌳🐝 can't just put it off till next month! 🙄 according to stats from last year's YCD series, 75% of submissions were made within a week of the submission period... so maybe they should extend the deadline? 🤔 also did u know that the most common things kids write about in YCD are animals (42%), weather (26%), and seasons (22%) 🦊🌞🌻

Ugh, I'm so over this... just another way for parents to waste their kids' time 🙄. Like, hello, 200-250 words? That's not even a real paragraph! And what's with the tip of paying attention to your senses? How hard is that to remember? 🤦‍♀️

And don't even get me started on the deadline... noon on Monday, February 2nd? Can't they just make it a little more reasonable? Like, how about February 15th instead? 😒

But hey, if your kid is into this sort of thing (and let's be real, most kids aren't 🤣), go for it! Maybe you'll discover some hidden talent. But I'm not holding my breath...

The way kids today are being encouraged to get outside and explore nature is just so refreshing 🌿💚. I mean, think about how much screen time they're exposed to already, it's amazing that The Guardian is pushing them to unplug and get creative. And who knows, maybe one of these young writers will be the next big nature-inspired author or scientist 🤓.

I love that they're offering tips from experienced YCD writers too - it's great that they're sharing their expertise and helping others get started. And can you imagine how proud a parent would feel if their kid's writing gets published in The Guardian? 😊 It's definitely inspiring to see kids being given the opportunity to share their thoughts and creativity with the world.

I'm not sure what the age range is, but 8-14 seems like a great age to start exploring nature and developing those writing skills. I hope more parents and guardians take advantage of this and encourage their kids to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors 🌳💕

omg i think this is such a great idea 🌿😊 - my kiddo loves exploring outdoors and always comes back with these amazing stories to share. it's awesome that the guardian is encouraging kids to get out there and write about their experiences. i've seen some of the past winners' stuff online and it's really inspiring! 📚 as a parent, its great to see your kid develop their writing skills and learn to appreciate nature at the same time. tips from the experienced writers are super helpful too - my little one is always getting distracted by bugs or leaves, so i'll try to get her to focus on her senses next time out 🐜💨 anyway, definitely gonna check it out with my kiddo and see if they can submit something! 👍

oh my gosh, this is such a great idea 💚! i think it's amazing that The Guardian is encouraging kids to get outside and explore nature 🌳. it's so important for our young people to connect with the environment and develop a love for the natural world ❤️. writing about their experiences can be a wonderful way for them to process what they've seen, heard, and felt in nature 📝. i'm totally going to share this with my friends who have kids around that age 🤗. let's get those kids outside and inspired by nature! 🌸

🌳 I think this is such a great initiative by The Guardian 📰! Encouraging kids to spend time in nature and develop their writing skills can have a huge impact on the next generation 🌟. As someone who's grown up with technology, it's easy to get lost in screens all day, but this project reminds us of the importance of getting outside and appreciating the world around us 🌿. I love that they're making it accessible for parents/guardians to submit their kids' work too, so even if you don't consider yourself a writer, your child's unique voice can still shine through 💡! Can't wait to see what some of these young writers come up with 😊!
