Young Country Diary: Encounters with Nature Awaits Your Submission
The Young Country Diary series is now accepting submissions for its next installment, inviting children aged 8-14 to share their encounters with nature. The deadline for winter submissions is on February 2nd at noon, and four successful entries will be published in the newspaper and online - two in January and two in February.
To participate, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Step into Nature
Take a day to explore your local environment, whether it's a nearby park, woodland, or even just your garden. Take note of what you see, hear, smell, and feel.
Step 2: Write Your Story
Write an article of 200-250 words about your encounter with nature, describing what happened and how it made you think and feel.
Step 3: Share Your Adventure
Fill out the submission form provided, which can be done by a parent or guardian. The form will be encrypted, ensuring that only the Guardian has access to your contributions. A journalist from the Young Country Diary team will contact you before publication.
Tips for Budding Writers
For those struggling to come up with ideas, here are some pointers:
- Use your senses: what did you see, hear, smell, and feel? Take notes so you don't forget.
- Look up extra information about what you saw: find out the type of butterfly or beetle, its lifespan, or any other interesting facts.
- Describe the scene: think big or small, and share details that bring your story to life.
- Reflect on your experience: what did it make you think about? How did it make you feel?
