Nature boys and girls – here's your chance to get published in the Guardian

Young Country Diary: Encounters with Nature Awaits Your Submission

The Young Country Diary series is now accepting submissions for its next installment, inviting children aged 8-14 to share their encounters with nature. The deadline for winter submissions is on February 2nd at noon, and four successful entries will be published in the newspaper and online - two in January and two in February.

To participate, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Step into Nature
Take a day to explore your local environment, whether it's a nearby park, woodland, or even just your garden. Take note of what you see, hear, smell, and feel.

Step 2: Write Your Story
Write an article of 200-250 words about your encounter with nature, describing what happened and how it made you think and feel.

Step 3: Share Your Adventure
Fill out the submission form provided, which can be done by a parent or guardian. The form will be encrypted, ensuring that only the Guardian has access to your contributions. A journalist from the Young Country Diary team will contact you before publication.

Tips for Budding Writers

For those struggling to come up with ideas, here are some pointers:

- Use your senses: what did you see, hear, smell, and feel? Take notes so you don't forget.
- Look up extra information about what you saw: find out the type of butterfly or beetle, its lifespan, or any other interesting facts.
- Describe the scene: think big or small, and share details that bring your story to life.
- Reflect on your experience: what did it make you think about? How did it make you feel?

Recent Young Country Diary Winners

For inspiration, take a look at recent submissions from children aged 8-14:

* Mia, 11, on finding a fairytale fungus
* Sachin, eight, on seeing a rare and beautiful bird
* Flynn, 10, on getting up close to a magnificent beetle

The deadline for entry is Sunday, November 2nd at 10 pm. If your child's piece is selected, they will be paid on behalf of the parent/guardian.

Don't miss this opportunity for your child to share their love of nature with others. Submit your entry today and inspire others with your child's unique story!

I'm all about empowering kids to get out there and explore nature 🌳👦! This program sounds like an amazing way to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity in young minds. I love that they're giving kids the chance to share their own stories and experiences, it's gonna be so cool to see what they come up with 😎. And who knows, maybe one of them will discover something new and share it with the world 🌟! It's also a great way for parents/guardians to encourage their little ones to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors, fresh air is good for everyone!

I think it's super cool that they're encouraging kids to get outside and explore nature 🌳💚. I mean, who doesn't love spending time outdoors and learning about the world around them? It's like a great way for them to clear their heads and just chill out, you know?

As for tips, I think using your senses is a genius idea 😊. Like, if someone sees something really cool, they should definitely take note of it! And getting extra info on what they saw can be pretty interesting too. Plus, reflecting on their experience can lead to some deep insights and stuff.

It's also awesome that the Young Country Diary team is supporting this initiative by sharing some winning submissions 📚. I'm sure it'll give other kids some inspiration to get started with their own writing and nature adventures!

omg u gotta submit ur kid 2 dis young country diary thing ASAP!!! 🤩 it sounds like so much fun, gettin all close w/ nature n stuff... my niece already wrote a story about her pet cat & its gonna be published lol. but seriously, its a great way 4 kids 2 express themselves n share their love of nature w/ others, & who knows, u might just discover the next big wildlife writer 🌿

OMG, you guys ! 🤩 I just found out that the Young Country Diary is having a submission round and I'm literally SO down for it !! 🌿💖 It's such a great idea to encourage kids to get outside and appreciate nature . I mean, who doesn't love spending time in nature, right? 😊 I've got some fave tips for budding writers - use your senses, look up extra info on what you saw, and describe the scene like it's a movie ! 🎥📚 And if your kid's piece is selected, they'll even get paid !! 💸 It's such a great way to inspire kids (and adults too) to share their love of nature with others . Can't wait to see some amazing submissions come in - who knows, maybe I'll even be the one reading about it ! 📚👀

I'm telling you, if kids just take the time to really observe their surroundings, they'll have so many amazing stories to tell. Like, I went on a hike last weekend and saw this totally gnarly tree trunk up close, and I was like "whoa, it's been growing that way for years". The other day, my friend's kid saw a squirrel and wrote about how fast it could climb trees - I mean, it's not rocket science! Just take some notes, pay attention to the little things. And don't worry if your kid's story isn't perfect, it's all about sharing their genuine experience with others 🌳💡

I just saw that kids can submit their own stories about nature and it's actually kinda cool 🌿📚 they get to explore the outdoors and write about it, it's like a fun science project and I think it would be awesome for them to share what they've learned with others...

I THINK THIS IS SUCH A AWESOME OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS TO SHARE THEIR ENCOUNTERS WITH NATURE!!! 🌳💚 IT'S LIKE, THEY GET TO BECOME THE NEXT BIG NATURE WARRIORS AND INSPIRE OTHERS WITH THEIR STORIES 😊. AND I LOVE THAT THEY'RE OFFERING TIPS FOR BUDDING WRITERS, LIKE USING YOUR SENSES AND LOOKING UP EXTRA INFO ABOUT WHAT YOU SAW 📚🦋. IT'S GONNA BE SO COOL TO READ ABOUT ALL THE AMAZING THINGS THESE KIDS FIND IN NATURE!!! 😎

I think its so cool that young kids can submit their own stories about nature, might teach them a lot about appreciating the tiny things in life 🌿💚. Like, I remember when I was younger, my grandma would take me on these long walks in the woods and we'd collect leaves and rocks and just observe everything around us... now that's something that still makes me happy 😊. And the fact that they're paying the parents for their submissions is a great way to encourage kids to get creative 🎨💸

I don't think this program is a good idea 🤔, but at the same time, I do think it's a great way to encourage kids to get outside and explore nature... unless you're thinking about all the pollution and climate change that's affecting our planet right now, which would actually make me say this whole thing is just a bunch of hype 😒. But on the other hand, if it inspires even just one kid to care more about the environment, then I guess it could be seen as positive 🌎. Ugh, my mind is all over the place!

🌿💡 So I think its awesome that they're having a contest like this! I mean, who doesnt love exploring the outdoors and sharing their adventures with others? 🌳 For me, the key to writing about nature is to be as descriptive as possible - you know, use sensory details like what you saw, heard, smelled, and felt. Like, if you find a butterfly, take note of its colors, shape, and movement! 💡

I also think its great that they're including tips for budding writers. Sometimes I get stuck too 😅 . But overall, this is such a cool way to encourage kids (and adults!) to appreciate nature and express themselves creatively. 🌸

What a great initiative! I'm totally down for kids to share their encounters with nature 🌳👍. It's awesome that they get to write about it and even get paid for it 💸. I think this is such an important way to encourage kids to appreciate the outdoors and learn about the world around them 🌿. Do you think this program would be a hit in other countries too? Would it help kids develop their writing skills at the same time? Should we see more programs like this?

omg i just got back from the most epic hike with my fam 🏞️🌳 we found a hidden waterfall that was literally magic ✨ my 7 year old nephew was so stoked he wrote this amazing article about it 📝 cant wait to submit it to young country diary 🤩

Omg 🤩 I'm like so excited about this!!! It's literally the best idea ever! I mean, who doesn't love being outdoors & exploring nature?! 🌳🏞️ Letting kids share their stories is a great way to inspire others & encourage them to appreciate the little things in life. I think it's so cool that they're offering cash rewards for the winners too 💸

🌿📚 I think it's awesome that the Young Country Diary is encouraging kids to get outside and explore nature. It's so important for them (and us!) to develop a deeper connection with the world around us. I've got three young ones of my own, and they're always fascinated by bugs and plants. I love how this program is celebrating their curiosity and creativity 🌸💡

😊 I think it's so cool that kids are getting encouraged to spend time in nature, you know? Like, we're always on our phones and stuff, but this is like a chance for them to disconnect and just be present. 🌳 And who knows, maybe they'll discover something new and awesome! 😎 It's great that the newspaper is doing this too, I mean, it's not every day you see kids getting published in a real paper. 📰 Their tips for budding writers are super helpful too, like, using your senses is key! 👂

I think this whole thing is a bit rich coming from the government, encouraging kids to spend more time outside when they're already pushing them to be online all day 🤔. I mean, what's next? A national app for kids to share their outdoor adventures so we can track their every move? 📊 And let's not forget about the parents who have to fill out those submission forms... are they getting some kind of compensation for their time and effort? It seems like just another way for them to keep a close eye on their little ones 😒.
