Never forget a face? You could be a super recogniser – podcast

Can You Spot a Stranger in the Crowd?

Do you have an incredible ability to recognize faces - even when they're distorted, partially hidden or from a distance? If so, you might be a 'super recogniser'. Research suggests that super recognisers make up just 1% of the population, but can spot individuals with remarkable accuracy.

To find out if you have this unique talent, try one of two tests: the UNSW Face Test or the Super Recognisers Greenwich Test. These assessments will put your face recognition skills to the test and provide you with valuable insights into your abilities.

Researchers are interested in super recognisers because they can potentially be used as experts in forensic psychology. With their exceptional face recognition skills, they could help identify individuals in CCTV footage, on security cameras or even from facial composites.

One super recogniser shared her story of how she developed this talent: "I've always had a good memory for faces, but it wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized just how impressive my abilities were. I could spot people I'd only met briefly months later. Since then, I've honed my skills and can recognize faces in all sorts of conditions - even when they're partially obscured or shown from the side."

Super recognisers often report feeling like their ability is more than just a skill - it's an intuition that guides them in everyday life. For example, if you see someone on the street who looks familiar but can't quite place them, your super recogniser instincts might kick in and help you recall who they are.

While being able to spot strangers in the crowd can be incredibly useful, it also comes with its own set of challenges. Some super recognisers report feeling anxious or overwhelmed by their ability, which can make everyday interactions feel like a minefield of potential face recognition challenges.

But for those with this remarkable talent, the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks. By using their abilities to help others and making a positive impact on society, super recognisers are truly making a difference.

omg i think its so cool to have that kind of ability 🤯 it would be awesome to be able to spot strangers in the crowd and know who they are without them even introducing themselves lol but also kinda nerve-wracking thinking about all those faces we see every day 😬 at least if u r good at this stuff u can make a difference in people's lives like with CCTV footage or security cameras 📸💻

I think it's kinda trippy that we can even develop an intuition for faces like that 🤯. I mean, imagine being able to recall someone's face from ages ago - it's like having a superpower! 👀 But at the same time, it can be overwhelming, especially when you're not expecting it 😬. Like, what if you see someone on the street and suddenly you're like "oh yeah, I know this guy!" but then you can't remember why 🤔. Anyway, I think it's awesome that researchers are studying super recognisers and trying to figure out how we can use this ability for good 💡.

🤯 you know what's wild about being able to spot strangers in the crowd? its not just about having a good memory for faces lol, its also about trusting your instincts! like when u see someone who looks familiar but cant quite place them... thats your super recogniser instincts kicking in. but here's the thing, sometimes we overthink things and try 2 figure out why that face looks so familiar. but really, it's just our intuition doing its thing. so yeah, being able to spot strangers in the crowd is cool and all, but its also a reminder that we should listen 2 our gut feelings more often 👂

idk how people do it tbh, can spot someone in a crowd from like 10 feet away like its second nature 🤯 i mean the thought of just knowing someone's face and being able to remember it no matter what is wild lol but at the same time its kinda cool that they exist, like real life superheroes or something 👏 and yeah its awesome that researchers are trying to learn more about them so we can all benefit from their skills 🤓

😊 I think it's kinda cool that we all have our own unique talents & abilities, like being able to spot faces in crowds! 🤯 I've got a friend who can do this too, but she never realized it until her teenage years when she started noticing how easily she could pick out people from photos or even just a glimpse of their face. For her, having this skill is more than just being good at it - it's like she has an intuition that helps her connect with people & remember them better. 💡 But I can imagine it might be kinda overwhelming too, especially when you're not expecting it! 😬

Ugh, I gotta say, having a "superpower" like being able to spot strangers in the crowd sounds kinda sketchy 🤔. Like, what if you start noticing every single person who looks familiar? You'll be constantly on edge, wondering who's gonna trigger your super recogniser instincts and make you freak out 😬. And don't even get me started on how awkward it must be to try to recall someone's face when they're partially obscured or from the side... that just sounds like a recipe for anxiety attacks 🤯. But hey, I guess if you can use your ability for good and help solve crimes or whatever, then go ahead and live with the stress of being a super recogniser 😅. Just don't expect me to be all like "ooh, let's make someone into a superhero" just because they've got a weird face recognition talent 🤦‍♀️.

😊 I find it fascinating that only 1% of the population possesses this incredible ability, yet it can be such a valuable asset in forensic psychology and beyond. The anecdote from one super recogniser is particularly compelling, highlighting how this talent can go beyond just recognizing faces and become an intuitive sense that guides them in daily life. It's also intriguing to consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of having such a unique ability, from the thrill of helping others to the anxiety of navigating everyday interactions where face recognition is a given. 🤔

I'm soooo fascinated by people who can spot a stranger in a crowd 🤯👀💡 it's like having a built-in detective mode 🔍 in their brain! I know someone who has this talent and it's crazy how they can recall faces from months ago 😮 I feel like a total noob when it comes to recognizing people 👫🚫 but hey being able to spot familiar faces is def a superpower 💪

I can imagine it can be overwhelming at times 🤯 especially when you see someone who looks familiar but can't quite place them 😳 but for those with this talent, it's like having an extra layer of security 🔒 knowing they can help others and make a difference in their community ❤️ it's amazing how one skill can bring so much joy and fulfillment 😊

I wonder how many people have this kinda ability lol 😂 I had that one friend in high school who could spot my face in a crowd from like 20 feet away 🤯 it was pretty wild! anywayz, its cool that researchers are studyin' super recognisers cuz its defo some kinda superpower 😎 but yeah i can see how its also got its downsides like feelin anxious or overwhelmed all the time 🤷‍♂️ still tho its dope to think about how sombody can use their brain in such a unique way 💡

omg i no how that feels like having a superpower!! 😍 i think its so cool that these people can recognize faces in all kinds of conditions... like how some ppl cant even remember their own family members lol but for them its like second nature!!! 🤯 id wanna take one of those tests tho just to see what kind of results i get... maybe ill be a super recogniser too!! 💡

idk about all these tests...seems like people r tryna figure out whether u can spot strangers in crowds or not 🤔 it's one ting to be good w/ face recognition, but another thing entirely 2 use that skill 4 personal gain 💸 i mean whats wrong w/ just keepin' 2 urself & observin' life around u? do we really need all these tests & labels 2 tell us what makes us special? 🤷‍♂️
